Driveclub Has No Clutch Support and No Horns; You can Drive With a Wheel from the Get Go

by on July 11, 2014 3:36 PM 78

If you like to drive your racing games with the clutch, the upcoming PS4 exclusive Driveclub is going to require a bit of getting used to, as mentioned by Game Director Paul Rustchynsky on Twitter today:

No clutch support currently, but I’ll have to check-up on the TH8RS for you.

Rustchynsky also mentioned that there isn’t a a button to toot your car’s horn, and since we’ll be thrown straight into a race as soon as we launch the game, if you have a wheel you won’t even need to touch your DualShock 4 to play, as your wheel will be configured automatically and will work from the get go.

Personally, I can’t help being a little disappointed by the lack of clutch support, but considering that there’s currently one PS4 compatible wheel with a clutch pedal for the moment (the Thrustmaster T-500), it’s perhaps understandable.

Since Rustchynsky says “currently” we can maybe hope to see it added with a future patch, when wheel support for the console will be extended.

what does he mean by “check up on the TH8RS for you”? I know what TH8RS is but not getting the sentence

    • Vious

because he was asked a direct question. i’m guessing the question goes something like this: “does driveclub has clutch support and does it support the TH8RS?”
      hence the reply.

  • CrusaderForever NoRegret

Yeah, this isn’t going to work for driving enthusiasts. This will get patched soon after release if not before if the backlash is large enough. Otherwise I don’t need a horn. Everything else is looking stellar.

  • Dany Stormborn

    Deal breaker

  • Vious

I always use clutch, cockpit view
this game looks good but with each new detail it seems the gameplay and mechanics are getting blander and blander.
I guess what I’ve said about this game in the past that it’s just a game to kill a few minutes nothing serious is holding true with each new detail.
the next thing is to wait for release, lets see how long it holds people’s attention for.

    • GameDev345

There will be clutch support, not just currently

It isn’t the gameplay or gameplay mechanics that are getting blander, it is the options that you get in Drive club that are just lesser compared to other racers like customization and no vista mode

It still does what it meant to do for an arcade racer, especially for people who don’t like full sims or simply just want to race, It looks great, seamless transition between online and single player, great social feature, good amount of cars and tracks with more to come

Until GT7 comes, I think Driveclub will holds people fun for a very long time rather than just a few minutes, it is just simple racing fun(Like motorstorm, made by the same studio)

      • Jeff Maxwell

No enhanced weather at the start, no horn, no clutch support at the start even though I think they’ve basically ignored it on purpose as the “Driveclub” steering wheel doesn’t have one maybe they should delay it another 3 months to give you a complete finished game… wonder what else will be patched in, 1 year delay still not enough time

        • GameDev345

First of all, you are complaining about a game you aren’t even going to play and secondly you are complaining about things that will be readily avaliable in the game at a later period and it will be great because the studio took their time to make it (rather than rushing it at launch, then have to fix it because it is terrible)

Remember Evo studio are small compared to Turn 10 and Polyphony and they have currently made clearly the best looking driving game (cars, tracks, weather and environment), the full gameplay mechanics is still yet to be judged

Remember Forza 5 embarrassing downgrade, might have gotten a better looking game if they took their time. Still looked like crap as time went on, which shows the Turn 10 team just wanted a fast launch game

          • Fake_of_Silva

Sorry pal, but you can stop now.

          • GameDev345

Don’t think I will stop fighting against fanboyism

      • Vious

your first line doesn’t make sense.
also, if certain options are nonexistent doesn’t that reflect gameplay?
as in certain options like clutch support which isn’t supported (currently) doesn’t that affect driving mechanics?

yeah it still does what it’s “meant” to do for an arcade racer, no doubt about that. but “seamless transition between online and single player” is a no. you’re mixing it up with another arcade racer.
great social feature = you don’t know how “great” that is yet.
good amount of cars and tracks = 50+ isn’t a good amount, it’s the minimum.

I understand you like the game, but don’t give superfluous reasons.
        it just makes you look……meh.
anyway, as I’ve said the game looks good, but lets see how long it holds people’s attention for.

        • GameDev345

My first line refers to the article you ignored, as in there will be clutch support in the game instead of none, which means the clutch support will be avaliable in the game at a later period, I mean you don’t just play the game once and drop it, there will always be updates and patches

Well those certain non existent options are not the core of the gameplay, you would usually look at car handling differentation, tracks, immersive environment, weather system affecting cars (physics and destructions for sim racers) .

Actually yes, there is seamless online and single player transition, the developer has actually discussed this, and there is really no other arcade racer out like Drive club to mix it up with.

The social feature is great to me, forming the best exclusive clubs, showing your driving abilities to try and get into the best clubs, being able to store every race your have ever done from the start and giving them to friends to see if they can beat your achievements in those races and some more, would keep me busy

Actually it is 55 cars with MORE TO COME (why do you want to ignore that??) Again you don’t pick up the game once then drop it

Motorstorm had similar offerings and kept me hooked, even though it looks better than Drive club

I enjoy jumping straight into a race against cpu and friends in immersive environments, simple as that, Drive club offers that and more

      • Michael Norris

        Motorstorm is so underrated.

  • H0nkys Have No Lips

who the heII wants a horn in their racing games?

    • Mark

Agreed. Unless it could affect oncoming tracffic, which’d be cool.

  • Wookie

It would be nice to use my new Logitech G27 on the PS4 or even the X1.

  • Jeff Maxwell

OMG this stuff makes me laugh the consoles are a PC… I havnt owned a console since the Nintendo 64 but thanks to alcohol and ebay I own a PS4 its a joke… with PC even though im sick of it im used to a game not working properly on release, needing patches, stuff added later not being able to log in the BS online DRM cus they cant be bothered to get enough servers for demand get a console and the same stuff is happening lol… day 1 patches stuff not ready 1 year, 1 year delay wtf have they bin doing for 1 year that the weather system isn’t ready?? I thought consoles were supposed to work straight from the start… guess developers took a leaf out the PC book, throw it out the door and we’ll give them the full game some time later after weve bin on holiday… if it was EA publishing this game I wouldn’t be surprised but not one of the elite 1st party sony game studios its unacceptable

    • Jecht_Sin

Oh, shut up. To have a game patched after one month to try to fix what isn’t working is different from getting (free) updates to add features or support for third party input devices.

The dynamic weather was not supposed to be there at launch before the delay. Since it has been shown that the dynamic weather now has been added but obviously it isn’t perfect Evolution Studios could do like they do with the PC: deliver the game now with broken weather support and fix it later. That’s what you prefer?

      • Jeff Maxwell

pends how broke it is by release if its minor yeah release it having something that mostly works is sometimes better than having nothing and getting it later how long after launch do they plan on releasing it? Laughing to myself cus thought damn cant go 1 day when I post on here with out moaning or an arguent hahaha

        • Jecht_Sin

The point is that the game will be fully functional at launch. Or at least it is supposed to be. Not like BF4, Skyrim and all crap like that in any platform. I think I still get dragons falling from the sky after 9 or 10 patches in Skyrim.

And yes, you complain too much for nothing, Let me ask.. Which has been the last game you completed to the rolling credits on PC? And when? Play more and bitch less!! :p

          • Jeff Maxwell

it was prolly cod ghosts was the last game, played sim city for a while but you dont really win at that. Infamous well its boring at least at the moment gotta hope it gets more interesting when I get across the bridge after taking out the last area. Killzone would be good f I could actually shoot stuff good job got that owl drone cus it does most of the killing for me, took me ages shoot the train off the track cus I couldn’t shoot the last think holding it on even though in the real world it would of snapped off cus of the weight from the rest of the train. Ill get used to the sticks just got acceleration problems, either goes to fast or to slow so when tracking a target laterally cant hit him. Driving game would be alot easier and better with sticks

          • Jecht_Sin

So in how many games did you reach the rolling credits?Did you finish ME? You said you were a fan. I ask because you claim to get bored quite often (don’t worry. It’s the alcohol. It does that. Actually.. DO worry! :p).

At the end as gamers the opinion of someone still having fun with a PS2 is more interesting. I’m not putting you down, I am just wondering what’s the point on being a spec maniac if one doesn’t enjoy many games on first instance.

          • Jeff Maxwell

most games except rpgs till a year or so ago. Finished all 3 ME’s, I like shooting ppl and blowing stuff up so fps’s will always be ok for me, but stuff like rpg’s are just boring go do that, go help some farmer with his turnips, go check on someat.. pffft.
Im not a spec maniac but if something else is holding MY new game back from achieving greatness ill be damn sure to go kick some @r$e… all you guys do it xbox. Who cares if its a console its more of a PC now than its ever bin, youll get steam boxes just with APU’s in within 2 years when they get more powerful then you could class it as a console as well so theres no difference anymore. The fact these consoles are holding games back does pi$$ me off cus they’ll always stick where the money is except the people who are shelling out the money can only afford this weak stuff. Nvidias and AMD GPU;s will completely outclass the consoles on every level the 750Ti holds it own pretty well an 850Ti is going to beat the consoles for sure

    • GameDev345

      “I own a PS4 its a joke”

No you don’t, If you think PS4 which is currently the most powerful gaming console and most preferred by devs and gamers is a joke then the Xbox One is literally a shite hole

      http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2014/07/10/gdc-europe-study-developers-favoring-ps4-over-xbox-one/

“if it was EA publishing this game I wouldn’t be surprised but not one of the elite 1st party sony game studios its unacceptable”

This shows you ignorance, comparing a huge gaming company like EA to a small gaming studio

Again, you would know that the Evo studio team is actually small and not one of sony elite studios (Sony elite is Polyphony who make Gran Turismo), which is why I am shocked at how impressive Driveclub looks.

Due to the team being so small and making a next gen driving games, the delay is actually acceptable, seeing as the game even looks much better than Turn 10 two Forzas and handles much better than its alpha stage

      • Jeff Maxwell

I do own a ps4 actually ask jecht got him on my psn thing, going get drive club anyway but just reminds how pc devs operate well not all of em some of em

        • Jecht_Sin

          Yeah, he does. lol

Regarding DriveClub.. You know that you will get the PS+ edition for free, don’t you? It will have all features (including the updated weather once it will be added), just a limited number of cars (10) and tracks (5). But fully playable. So you can play it quite a lot before deciding if getting the full game.

          • GameDev345

            “Yeah, he does. lol”

He could have one, or he could be using somebody else’s PS4 and have a psn name on it

          • Jecht_Sin

Sure, he could play that mind game. But he has been ranting for so long while drunk about buying a PS4 that I believe he did it for real. Then you know.. The trophies have a timestamp on them. I can check him. :)

          • Jeff Maxwell

yeah like I care I that much id pretend I’ve bought a PS4 when I havnt

  • Ryan Rath

I can’t imagine the whole no clutch thing to not last long anyway. As for horn, that’s just a pure fluff feature in any racing game that nobody uses. Audio candy really and completely useless. I personally do not care, but once again I also see both these things being added in, especially once Sony gets around to better firmware support for the PS4 to support more driving wheels like the Logitech GT Force Wheel and others.

As for the rest of the game, it’s gorgeous. It truly appears that its going to give Forza a run for its money and then some. I don’t even think Forza can compare to the weather effects and I must say I deeply impressed. Been following Drive Club since it was announced and though I was disappointed it wasn’t a launch title afterall, I am more than alright with the fact that it is a year delayed when so much attention to detail has gone into it. Not worried about no clutch support. Hell, it’s not even out yet. It will come. No worries.

    • Mark

If ur looking for graphics, this is it then. Personally I’m looking for car damage and customization.

  • Stian from Norway!

One wheel? Everything works on PS4 even flightsticks! It’s just not supported by Sony yet…

    • superkarma

It has nothing to do with Sony. Logitech and Fanatac wheels still have no PS4 support. Why? Because Logitech and Fanatac haven’t updated their wheels for PS4. The blame rests solely on accessory manufacturers. If the wheel manufacturer supports PS4, but a game doesn’t…then the blame goes to the game developer.

  • Jimmy DoneGood

Sounds like this game is unfinished. No clutch support, only 50 cars. No customization for an arcade game, that’s weird. No weather at launch. Delayclub needs to be delayed for another year in my opinion.

    • Reefer Sutherland

no customization for an arcade game is weird to you? LOL well alrighty.

      • Jessie Bristol

I don’t enjoy racing games and even I know that Arcade racers have had customization features dating all the way back to the PS2.

        • Reefer Sutherland

the point is that it’s not necessary and they don’t all have it. If you wanna complain for the sake of complaining then that’s on you. Seems like that’s the thing to do when you’re a gamer now.

    • Not_true

Driveclub will review and sell well to normal, sane people who like video games.

Driveclub got great impressions at E3 2014, it’s like a next-gen PGR with connected social features and club competition. Most E3 2014 impressions state it plays well and looks great. It will review well and sell decently. It’s the best looking console racing game. Driveclub’s weather effects look amazing running on PS4’s more powerful console hardware.

It’s like Project Gotham Racing. 50 tracks in different locations is a good amount of variety. Club limits can be expanded if the developers want to post-launch. It’s not a technical limitation.

This game is channeling Project Gotham Racing, one of Xbox’s most beloved arcade racers. Those games didn’t have any customization beyond paint jobs and you know what? They were still amazing. It’s an arcade racer, different from sim racers, it doesn’t necessarily need fine tuning customizations. Not inherently better or worse.

Closed and open world racers are different experiences, not inherently better or worse than one another.

Weather is confirmed free in a patch soon after launch. It was demoed in-game to journalists at E3 2014, it’s basically finished.

I am, fanboy. He posted a status update and I thanked him for it. Try harder.

          • disqus_TCr2DiTW3m

please no insults. we want to keep this place clean and on topic. if you’d like to talk about the article that’d be fine but please don’t go around trying to start arguments.

          • superkarma

No thanks, fanboy. I’m simply replying to your troll bait showing you how your claim that I was off topic was incorrect. You’re gonna have to try harder.

          • disqus_TCr2DiTW3m

why are you so defensive? all i did was ask you to stay on topic, which you continue not too. seems like you’re more out for an argument. have a good one

          • superkarma

You consider this being defensive? Lol. I’m simply proving you wrong, once again. For someone who is advocating no arguments, you sure seem to be doing a good job doing the opposite. I’m sorry your troll bait backfired on you. Better luck next time.

          • supersungin

of course his troll, anyway have fun with site,i just cant keep going with bashing and biased sony thing, anyway dude my apology to you and sony fanboys to any comment iv caused,im leaving this site so you feel happy, have nice day.

          • superkarma

It’s all good, bro. I don’t take anything on the net personally, so no worries here. You should stick around, but just knock off the PC trolling crap.

          • supersungin

            done and done,am leaving goodbye

  • Jamal

    No clutch, serious let down.

  • They Call Me Senpai

It’ll be patched in later, but the buzzards will still swarm. DriveClub is still shaping up to be the racer to beat this year, so no worries.

    • Andre Crawford

U mean last year….because this was suppose to be a launch title…REMEBER

      • superkarma

No, he means this year, since it’s being released this year. REMEMBER

        • Fake_of_Silva

Nov 2013 is not “this year”.

          • superkarma

No, but Oct 2014 sure is “this year”…which is exactly what Senpai said. It will be the racer to beat “this year”.

            Try harder.

          • Fake_of_Silva

Delayclub was suposed to be a launch title.

            You can go defensive now.

          • superkarma

What does being a launch title have to do with anything? Senpai said it would be the racer to beat this year. Then another troll (similar to yourself) attempted to bring it back to it originally being a launch title. Again, that has absolutely nothing to do with Senpai’s comment. Senpai’s opinion/point still stands. The game is being released this year, therefore it’s the racer to beat this year.

Also, I’m not defensive at all. I love how you trolls throw around the “defensive” word when you get proved wrong. Keep trying.

          • Fake_of_Silva

Do you want to beat a last year promise? Ok, add clutch support.

            Defend a little more.

          • superkarma

That’s your opinion. Senpai’s opinion is that it’s the racer to beat. Keep trying. Sooner or later you’re bound to catch on that these are simply opinions. While you’re trying to come to that realization, I’ll be laughing at your expense for not realizing this earlier.

          • Not_true

      • GameDev345

It was supposed to be a launch title, but even looks far much better and apparently handles much better according to reviews than it did in its early stage

Id rather have the experience of great delayed driving game then a terrible launch driving game

    • disqus_TCr2DiTW3m

id say FH2 but its all opinion

    • Dany Stormborn

Im not sure that clutch support is something you can just patch in without some major effort…………

This news removes any ambiguity between sim and arcade racer though; this is clearly 100% arcade racing.

    • king_of_spades

      the racer to beat? lmfao

    • Suavearmadillo

It’s shaping up to be the racer to patch this year. If you like casual, MarioKart is awesome, if you like hardcore sim, we know this isn’t it. For the folks who like arcade/realistic, this might be good. It is definitely not looking like the “RACER” to beat this year, it looks nice and all but so does ProjectCars. Personally, i’m excited for Horizon2 based off how good the first one was.

    • Volpejr

Driveclub is shaping up to be the casual* racer to beat this year.

  • disqus_TCr2DiTW3m

clutch support would be nice but there aren’t even any wheels yet so whatever. hopefully like senpai says, they can patch it in once one releases

  • http://www.sony.com Based Sony

It’ll be patched in later I’m sure. And that’s perfectly fine, just gotta have patience. I think we could all wait a year for this and the other PS4 features.

Could be worse, could be Forza or a PC game.

  • king_of_spades

    smh

  • RealityCheck2013

No HORN needed because i get the HORN just looking at this game ;-o

  • Porcu Peth

i don’t even use wheels. controller is enough for me

  • Fake_of_Silva

Very well, automatic car simulation it is then!

    • Volpejr

Does that mean there’ll only be automatic transmissions in the game or will we have manual shifting as well?

  • Raian K.

    How is this news? LOL

    • Mark

It is a feature that some may have been wondering about, in the game. Obviously clutch is for more skilled drivers.

  • Volpejr

I’m not sure I understand.. Does this mean that there is no manual shifting in the game or does it mean there just won’t be clutch support for racing wheels?

  • Tom Graham

You can drive with a wheel from the get-go but not any of the wheels that the majority of racing fans own, namely the superior Logitech wheels. Check out the petition if you’d like to see that change…
