PlayStation’s Father Ken Kutaragi “Really Pleased” with PS4; Might Collaborate with Sony Again Soon

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House talked earlier this week at a keynote at Develop Conference in Brighton, UK, and he explained that the bridges with the original PlayStation’s creator Ken Kutaragi definitely haven’t been cut.

House mentioned that he remains in close touch with Kutaragi-san and all the other founders of the company. As a matter of fact he was at Sony Computer Entertainment’s offices on Monday. House wanted to show him something and Kutaragi-san has a project that he’s working on that he wants to enlist SCE’s help on.

According to House, the relationship with Kutaragi-san has developed in a really great one and has deepened overtime. He has even offered advice and perspective prior to the launch event:

He is really pleased about the way that PlayStation 4 has shaped up. I think that it’s in keeping with his original vision for the organization. We get some tremendous support from him, which is just great.

I’m sure I’m not the only one whose curiosity has been piqued by Kutaragi-san’s project on which he’d like to collaborate with the house of PlayStation. Currently he’s the CEO of Cyber AI Entertainment, where he works with two other Sony veterans, former SCEA President Takashi Usuki and former Development Director Yasuhiko Yokote.

The company’s official website mentions “Real-time information processing systems using next-generation network technology and research and development of digital signal processing technology. Enabling the creation of a new entertainment market and a new network platform. Research and development of the human interface for the next generation.”

While we have no way to know if this is what House was talking about, it’s definitely intriguing.

While I deeply respect Kutaragi, his obsession with Cell in 2005/6 was absolute madness.

Still, glad to see Sony understood and went with x86 for the PS4.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

You know. I think on the long run it worked out well. From what many developers at Naughty Dog and other Sony teams say, Cell really increased their skillsets, so if they’re so good now, we might have to tank Ken.

      • Creed

lol exactly. If they can conquer Cell they can conquer anything,

      • MTM2

I suppose, but still it really did impact the 3rd parties which was a foolish move since they’re the lifeblood of consoles. When learning to program games at my Uni we use the Cell architecture as the starting point since it’s the hardest to work with, once you’re competent with Cell you really can do anything.

I’m sure it’s super rewarding if you work with it, but making it so complicated from the get go was detrimental to early multi-plats (RDR being a highlight where it looked remarkably worse on the PS3)

That said I love my PS3, it’s still the most feature-rich console on the market.

        • phar0ahad3

I think cell had alot of unused potential that no one knows i think one day it will make a comeback as long as its easy to develop for it might really bring some amazing graphics towards the end of a generation remember tlou like right now were all worried about the future of the current generation consoles due to graphics but with cell we never had to worry about that

        • Boerewors

“Easy to design for” can bring up problems of their own. If you for instance take your typical Naughty Dog or Nintendo employee and send em to Ubisoft, it won’t be long before he’s kicking ass over there. Because they learned how to code the hard way, they can develop games way more efficiently than lots of other devs. With the ps3 it was hard to get it up to the 360 standard, but when they finally managed, there was still an extra 20percent of untapped potential which the 360 simply didn’t have. And it’s not just coding: even the art departments know how they can save the coders work and valuable space and power by designing background and such which are recyclable.
I always have great respect for ND (or team ICE) and Nintendo when it comes down to how they are able to squeeze every last drop out of their consoles. Developing like that is what is gonna set them even more apart from the rest in the future: although programming has become more and more easy, the pure raw power of the consoles is in comparison lower than ever. Developers who know all the tricks to extract every drop of juice out of it will be crowned kings. And with the ongoing trend to mobile gaming, efficient coding/ programming will once again be needed.

          • I don’t think its that easy. Naughty Dog has exceptional coders but they would be working with different game engines, not the ones they built around the PS3. That is not the case with Unreal, Frostbite, and many other game engines.

      • theshape031

No way. Had Sony not used Cell, they could’ve launched their introduction model at $399, and the higher end model at $499. Having that price point would have made all the difference at launch. And let’s not forget how much of a failure the PS3 launch was. Kutaragi was the guy promoting the idea of consumers getting a second job to afford the thing. Ridiculous.

If Sony had been smarter, who knows what the success of the PS3 would look like by now. They could’ve easily trumped PS1 sales and not had to fight an extremely uphill battle for the first 3-4 years of the previous console generation.

I, for one, would prefer not to see him back.

        • Sucka Free

It wasn’t Cell that drove the price of the PS3 up, it was the Blu Ray player

          • Jecht_Sin

True. And the initial PS2 HW emulation added up as well.

          • Sucka Free

            Oh yeah, that too.

          • Both had increased the price. Its not a secret that the cell processor is very expensive and been the whole reason why it was difficult to develop for.

          • Sucka Free

I know that it made it difficult to develop for due to the split memory, but I never heard anything about it being more expensive

          • Its expensive to make because of the complexity of it and there is nothing like it. Its like a standardized system. Its very unique. Its one thing people bitched constantly about the expensive of the system. Cell processor’s expenses always went hand and hand with the cost of the PS3. You can look it up and find out. Its not a hidden fact. I am just happy that they stopped going the in-house route to develop their system. The cost of R&D is too much and there proved to be little pay off doing so.

        • bob

I definitely agree with you, they kicked him out because he soured the brand so badly.

I remember the conceit of the PS2/PS3 is that the hardware was so difficult to develop for, that devs couldn’t afford to either develop for other platforms after the PS version or just couldn’t afford to develop a PS version at all. Definitely shitty times that are thankfully history for the time being.

Yup. That which does not kill us makes us stronger! I think it was Nietzsche saying that. :=)

      • Not_true

Krazy Ken’s PS3 was a disaster for the Playstation brand. PS3 should have been more like PS4.

      • desponent

Except for the fact that they lost tens of million of their old fanbase and hundreds of million of dollar repairing the brand, sure yeah it works out well.

      • HustyparmenCZ

it helped few 1st party studios / it almost destroyed all 3rd party support…hmm nope, sorry Ken.

    • Porcu Peth

i don’t think the issue was Cell itself, but rather the fact that there was so little cooperation and talk with the developers. it was like the system was made inside a bubble and then everyone else had to figure it out by themselves. pretty much the opposite of what Sony is doing with PS4.

They’re better off without him, he’s definitely a legendary risk taker though.

    • “Legendary risk taker” -That is an excellent way to characterize him 😉

    • “They’re better off without him” Don’t you dare say that about my father >:( sure he abandoned me, and my brothers and sisters as kids and our mamma has too work 4 jobs to feed us and take care of us but he really does miss us :,(

  • desponent

Pls no, reading Shu‘s experience leading to ps3 launch, due to crazy Ken, is terrifying enough.

  • mark

keep this senile old fool locked away where he belongs

  • Ken Kutaragi helped Sony a lot but he was too ambitious with the complexity of the cell processor. That was his downfall. Sony’s new approach with a more standardized cpu was a long time coming.

  • solkeher

Excuse my ignorance, but why is -san always added to a Japanese person’s name? Like Miyasaki-san, Kutaragi-san, is that the equivalent to “Mr.” or “Sr”?

    • Bryan

-San is a show of respect to someone.
-Chan is a show of friendship or closeness
-Sama is a show of respect to someone of higher status like a Prince or Princess

Gender doesn’t really matter. Thought Chan is mostly used for female.

      • solkeher

        Thanks for the explanation!

      • Budgiecat

        you forgot -Kun

        • Bryan

That’s the male version of Chan
Parents may use Kun or Chan for their own kids.

          • Budgiecat

            you also forgot -Sempai/ -Sensei

          • Bryan

Sempai is used in an educational setting, for someone older than you (gender doesn’t matter)
            Sensei is for a teacher

          • Budgiecat

no not all the time. For example: Kutaragi-Sensei. So can be used in business or as a sign of respect to a famous person.

And a Sempai can be someone younger than you; just more experienced and trained. ex: martial arts

          • Bryan

You are right. But Sensei still means a teacher in the sense that you call someone that if you admire them for what they did, thus you either want to learn from them or do something to surpass them.

Sempai is as you said. Kouhai is the opposite of sempai in case you were going to bring that up next.

          • Bugdiecat

  • someguy

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

I have the perfect number of employees, which is zero. You should try it some time Andy. It works well.-Andrew House

So theoretically, or if hypothetically if I must, PS4 is basically what Kutaragi-san envisioned PS3 to be from the start but couldn’t achieve such a feat at the time? That’s probably too far fetched though anyway.

  • Budgiecat

Hironobu Sakaguchi does not like this man…

Maybe they can mend the old severed bridges so the Gooch can stop making garbage cell phone games and make a console game for Sony again…

  • articuzwolf

his genius vision + Cerny’s open minded business model
    winning combination here…
as long as you didn’t give too much power to him

    • erMonezza

      Stop it. Better not.
The PS4 is already winning. I don’t think it’s a smart idea destroying the XBOX1 into dust by using this man as a not-so-secret weapon.

  • Carl

If Kutaragi really works with Sony Computer Entertainment to develop his project, I believe it could be the first step towards the next generation of Playstation. PS5 or whatever.

  • junguler

i don’t really care for the person, i care for the product, if there wasn’t a sony playstation console i would just buy something else from some other company.

  • Mikail

Well he created the PlayStation Brand, He the one who saw an opportunity on Video games industry, He is still the father of PlayStation, with out him you will never knew that Mark Cerny is awesome lol.

  • Loghorn

Please, I beg of you…don’t let Ken take charge of the PS brand again!

He’s the main reason why Sony’s lost a lot of money with the PS3 & have made both PS2 & PS3 very difficult for developers to develop games for their platforms!
