Naughty Dog Dev Admits The Last of Us On PS4 Has “A Lot of Bugs;” Agility 2 Requires a Patch and More

by on August 8, 2014 7:21 AM 139

The Last of Us Remastered had a very successful launch, but it’s doubtless that the game suffers from quite a few nagging issues, especially on its multiplayer portion. Yet Naughty Dog developers are no strangers to owning up to this kind of problems, and Multiplayer Designer Quentin Cobb openly admitted that there’s a lot of work to do on the official PlayStation forums, also promising that the team is hard at work on ironing out the kinks.

We recognize that we have a lot of bugs to fix and trust me, we are working on them. Many of these bugs require a patch which requires several weeks to release. Multiple patches are in the works to fix these bugs and matchmaking overall quality. I will try to keep you all up to date as much as I can. Thanks for all the feedback, it helps a lot!

One of the issues brought up by players is  related with the popular perk Agility 2. Apparently footsteps aren’t properly silenced, allowing enemy players to hear you. Cobb mentioned that a live update won’t be enough to fix that one:

That’s going to require a patch unfortunately.

Luckily not all news are bad, and yesterday’s live update released to partially fix the overlong matchmaking times seems to have given good results, as mentioned by Naughty Dog itself over twitter:

We pushed Live Update 1.01.012 for #TheLastOfUs Remastered earlier & seeing vastly improved matchmaking times. Still working on more updates.

So far so good. Hopefully Naughty Dog’s labor of love will soon bear fruit, and players will be able to enjoy this masterpiece even more than they are already.

So naughty dog tell me, why would you release a game with so much problem?

i have many problems with the multiplayer, but again, why would you release a game with SO MUCH PROBLEM?

    • Mitch

      Ask SCE, not Naughty Dog.

Because there’s no Q&A structure that can catch every bug in a game before it actually gets to cope with hundreds of thousands of customers.

      It’s really pretty simple.

      • DarthDiggler

        @giuseppenelva:disqus

I am a HUGE ND fan, they could have beta tested, especially after asking for people for $50 which i didn’t complain about because I didn’t expect the Multiplayer to be garbage.

        • ssjenforcer191191191 .

          i agree.
i wish i traded back my game to ebgames tuesday to get my full money back.

i only recently found out the multiplayer has Pay2Win features like buying a faster crouch walk and ammo perks and a gun that is OP as hell.

i was looking forward to the ps3 TLOU multiplayer experience i remembered.

back before all the bs DLC and pay2win

Not only that they’re porting a bunch of existing code, which means not only is it basically “new again” to the original devs, there are tons of issues which simply crop up as a result of the port.

I’m somewhat surprised they bothered to (from the sound of it) port so much at all, and not just rewrite vast swathes of it from scratch, reusing the assets. But they seemed to get it out the door pretty quickly as a result.

      • RockerxxRicardo .

Because if they delayed it people would bitch and moan it’s sadly the truth. :l

      • DIGITALxALCHEMIST

They new about the bugs and still released a broken game!!! not sure how you can defend that!!!!!

        • orangpelupa

but thats how game development work. You KNOW your game have bugs and you release it.

if you keep killing all 100% bugs, you will NEVER release a game.

there’s mainly 2 kinds of bug.
          1. Show-stopper bug
          2. non show-stopper bug.

show-stopper bug need to be squashed. non show-stopper bug is okay.

although since the era of internet update, more and more dev seems considering many “show stopper bug” as “non show stopper”. Because you can patch it later

          • They Call Me Senpai

As he thoroughly explains later, you can’t kill 100% of bugs when it comes to software, it’s just not possible.

        • They Call Me Senpai

Maybe because no game can be bug-free?

      • Sumyung

Or they knew that it was broken but released it anyway since delaying it a few weeks would put it somewhere in between destiny and call of duty and about 20 other awesome new releases…

See I can do conspiracy theories against the ps4 too.. I’m an equal opportunities a***ole… :)

      • GotNews4Ya

You would think people would be happy with the response time, and support already given for the game.. rather than be displeased that the game ended up with some problems.. 20 years ago.. you’d just suck it up since the game had shipped with issues.. LOL (Funny, and true.. but really has nothing to do with anything, just thought i’d throw it out here! LOL)

    • Aaron

No matter how much QA a game has, it will always have bugs present. Look at Skyrim(A game I don’t care for, but I digress)a game that people love and garnered countless awards. Also, a buggy mess.

The Last Of Us is far from broken and unplayable. Most of the issues lie in MP(I’ll be honest, I still haven’t played the MP on PS3 or 4, a testament to how much I love the SP)

The SP has had zero issues for me so far. The only thing I’m aware of is some pop up apparently, which I haven’t seen myself, buy has been documented.

    • Aw Yiss

      SO MUCH PROBLEM! SUCH WOW!!

  • demfax

These are all multiplayer related issues. Single player (which is what most bought it for) is basically bug free, with only a few minor visual glitches.

  • IncognitosX

The first time I played multilayer it took me a few minutes to connect but ever since it’s been as good as any other game I’ve played. The only bug I noticed personally was with the single player game, the collision detection wasn’t working very well and characters were running through one an other. Glad to hear they are working on it for those having issues though.

  • Porcu Peth

other than matchmaking issues i haven’t encountered bugs

then again i don’t use agility so i don’t know about that one

  • Alexander

There’s a fun one where if you (SPOILERS) throw a Molotov at the zombies bursting through the door in that sewer when you’re with Sam and Henry they will become invincible burning super zombies even if you grab them and stomp their heads of they still live and it’s hilarious!

    • http://avluis.net/ Luis Alvarado

I need to try this before it gets patched!
Loving this game all over again!

  • Kamille

every time I said that the remaster had way many more bugs than the original version people often called me a troll and stuff. Well, I wonder what sony fans will say now that it’s ND who says the game has lots of bugs.

    • They Call Me Senpai

There’s been, what, 3 bugs? That’s less than the PS3 version had/has, so you are a troll.

  • Carl

I think all those bugs are due to transitioning PS3-optimized, Cell-centered code to PS4 in a really small time-frame (Naughty Dog worked on this remastered edition for under a year). In a few months everything should be fixed with a series of patches.

  • Thinkaboutit

No ACTUAL 10/10 game has bugs. 10/10 means perfect. Someone got paid.

    • Carl

There’s no 100% perfect game ever. Even the greatest games of all time have bugs and glitches. What matters is the experience developers want their games to offer to gamers, and how well it is executed.

      • Thinkaboutit

I agree. Im not hating on the game i just dont ever like a 10/10 rating because that ish has to be PERFECT to receive that rating.

        • Carl

Like I said, no one can ever create something 100% perfect. They can only create the best humanly possible product in a time and money restricted budget. That’s what a 10/10 (or even 9/10) rating is all about.

      • jcnba28

Super Mario Galaxy is a perfect game.

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

To me SMG is a 10/10.

          • jcnba28

            Agreed.

        • Temjin001

there was a part where the camera got in the way and I died so it’s no longer perfect. I also saw a somewhat blurry texture and a jagged edge so that’s not perfect either.

          • jcnba28

The game must have been too difficult for you. Blurry textures? You do realise Galaxy was a game made for standard def televisions? It’s a perfect game because there is no other platformer that even comes close to it.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

This is the most ridiculous thing I read so far today. Thanks.

Perfection doesn’t exist in a product as complex as video games. For most outlets a 10/10 score indicates a game that gets near enough (according to their standards) to it and offers such a great experience that the issues are negligible in comparison.

For what I’m personally concerned, TLOU:R fits that definition very well.

      • Thinkaboutit

10/10 means perfect anywhere. Perfection means no issues.

        • Giuseppe Nelva

          Sorry, but you’re just wrong.

Mind you, you have no title to decide what 10/10 means for any media outlet, as that is dictated for each by its review policies, not by your personal idea of what a 10/10 should be.

          • Thinkaboutit

LOL suddenly 10 out of 10 isnt perfect. WHAT!

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Pipe down. <- not just a suggestion.

What 10/10 means is decided by each outlet's review policy. Not by you.

          • qqq

wow, you really are on the slow side, arent you. 10/10 doesn’t mean what you want it to mean, or any policy. It means you cant do better that that, that its perfect. Clearly, you imagine it means different, for some reason

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Actually, there’s no objective, dictionary-dictated meaning of 10/10. The only thing that dictates what 10/10 means is each site’s review policy.

The fact that you state your definition of 10/10 as fact doesn’t make it fact.

          • qqq

“The only thing that dictates what 10/10 means is each site’s review policy.”

really, you’re a lost cause. The fact that you fancy yourself smart and think you’re right just makes it funnier. In school you get 10/10 when you do everything right, and make no mistakes. When itds perfect. In games you get 10/10 based on an outlets review policy. genius

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Only, game reviews aren’t school tests. Try again?

          • qqq

clearly, in games perfect scores represent faulty products. Must be the only domain where this applies

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Not really. It applies to any domain in which an outlet decides its own review policy of a complex product.

          • qqq

yes, so this outlet decided that perfect scores dont actually mean perfect scores. Again, genius

          • Giuseppe Nelva

No. Any outlet that actively uses 10/10 as part of its scale (or the maximum amount in any range, whether it’s five stars, or 100/100 or whatever) decides that a perfect score doesn’t actually mean “perfection.” Otherwise 10/10 would not be used, since perfection is non-achievable condition in game development. You got close, but failed at the last two words.

          • Jordan

stop being such a douche to argue over such pointless thing. you are as good as saying you should never get 100/100 in an exam because you dont have the best handwriting althou you score all tne answers correctly. stop being an idiot.

          • Thinkaboutit

the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.

If it didnt have flaws or defects then why does it need a patch?

          • Giuseppe Nelva

That’s the definition of “perfection.” that’s not the definition of 10/10.

          • Thinkaboutit

            LOL at you

          • qqq

10/10 means the best possible. Meaning perfect. I mean simple stuff like this is above you, really ?

          • Giuseppe Nelva

“10/10 means the best possible.” which is not perfection. “possible” being the key word. Thanks for proving my point.

PS: the next personal attack will net you a ban.

          • qqq

okay then, i must screenshot this, its priceless, others need to see stuff like this. So much fun, really apreciate this

          • Giuseppe Nelva

            Go right ahead.

          • GUN®

You’d only make yourself look bad, 10/10 means it’s a game that hits everything it set out to achieve but it will never mean perfect. There are no perfect films either but do you attack movie reviewers who hand out 5 stars?

          • qqq

10/10 should have a certain meaning, it should be something to strive for. Not being handed out like candy, just because you think a game hit certain buttons right. And even the idea that perfect score doesn’t mean perfect game, just a game that did the best possible at that time. How would you know it even did the best possible at that time? You cant. You can only rate games as close to a perfect score as possible, but not actually perfect. This makes scores lose all meaning, if whenever you think a game is must buy you award ten’s. A simple score above 90 should be something that draws attention, but these days 10/10’s are flying everywhere, it lost all meaning when i see one. And rest asured, i’m most deffinitely not the one loking bad in this conversation, i can absolutely asure you of this

          • Giuseppe Nelva

“10/10 should have a certain meaning”

yes. And in fact it does. You just don’t get to decide what it is.

Unless you make your own site, of course. In which case you get to decide what that meaning is for your own site, and that’s it.

          • qqq

youre right, i dont get to decide, you dont get to decide, neither does. A perfect score means there can’t be better than that. Which clearly isn’t the case with games

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Yep. I don’t get to decide, because I’m not the reviews editor.

          • albatrosMyster

don’t you think that if a scale goes all the way to 10 there should be a way to reach it? Only very simple games could get 10s if was entirely a question of being bug free… even then, all platforms have bugs in ther libraries, processors themselves can cause problems, etc. They just don’t always manifest in a very problematic way.

          • GUN®

“10/10 should have a certain meaning”

And it does, that depending on the reviewers scale.

          • albatrosMyster

No 5 stars is only 5, this is not the same thing as a 10!

          • Sucka Free

Yet there are plenty of games that have achieved 10/10 but no game that has achieved it universally. It is a subjective score. 10/10 means that it was one of the best games the reviewer has ever played, a superlative experience, not a perfect one

          • bigevilworldwide

There is no suddenly anyone with half a brain knows that 10/10 does not mean perfect and 100% of review sites would all actually confirm that…..Been that way forever.

          • qqq

so a score that represents perfection, no fault, not possible for better, that doesn’t apply, acording to you, in games, as complex as they are. Best stuff i read all month. Thanks

          • Giuseppe Nelva

A score represents what the review policy of the outlets that gives it says it represent.

By your logic, 10/10 should never be used, simply because perfection in game development is physically impossible.

            Of course, that’s complete nonsense.

          • qqq

yes, thats exactly what i mean. 10/10 doesnt exist in games

          • Giuseppe Nelva

Perfection doesn’t exist in games. 10/10 quite evidently does.

That’s simply because perfection is an objective concept. 10/10 is not. I’m sure if you make a conscious effort you’ll catch the gist of the difference.

          • qqq

well its clear by now you cant graps simple concepts so whats the point. Perfect scores don’t actually represent perfect products because there arent any, objectively. Thats literally rocket science right here

          • Giuseppe Nelva

And in fact no site will ever tell you that its perfect score represents a perfect product. But you don’t seem to grasp that simple fact.

          • albatrosMyster

A game’s final review score is a general appreciation of the quality of the game, gaming wise… all computer programs have glitches and bugs that can be exploited in some way, that includes games.

10/10 exists for games that truly stand out, in therms of gaming when they are released, expecting “bug free” is rather naive and it shows a lack of understanding of how computer programming works, however, a minimum QA is expected as well, because some bugs are game breaking and will make the game unplayable for a lot of people…

This is the same thing for frame rate (performance) and resolution, for certain games dropping the frame rate too low will just make it unplayable, while targeting will always make a game better (assuming it’s any good to begin with), dropping the resolution too low on a first person shooter forces you to change level layout because far away objects become indistinguishable… just using a resolution that is not native on a modern TV will make the image blurry, no matter how beautiful the art is before the upscale happen, visual quality, like sound quality, like story, like frame rate, like input lag, like animation quality. realistic physics all affect how we appreciate a game… yet none of these alone ensure a good game, or if one or more is completely broken the final game may still be “great” and the best game ever because “fun” is not a technical therm.

        • rllintrllin

There’s no such thing as perfection in software development. No such thing as a bug free product.

          • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I agree…everyone has to calm down. 10/10 has never meant a “perfect” product that is free from defects. It refers to a game that has that “it” factor – the designs, the music, the feeling, the characters, the scenarios, the story and gameplay…as well as the enjoyment. Of course, it would not be “broken” either…and TLoU is far from it.

        • Fake_of_Silva

So, this “warmed up” game is far from 10/10 on Replaystation 4 for sure.

          • superkarma

            You’re trying too hard, fanboy.

          • HawaiianDread

Meh should have paid him no mind that was one of the worst attempt at trolling I seen in a long time.

          • superkarma

Yeah, agreed. He needs new material. I just like pointing out the idiocy sometimes. :)

          • Sucka Free

yeah, I give it a 1/10 and I’m being generous (actually the scale starts at 1 so I can’t go any lower)

          • Fake_of_Silva

            Prove me wrong, BITCH.

          • superkarma

Prove you wrong about what? The fact that you’re trying too hard or the fact that you’re a pathetic fanboy troll, who is apparently quite upset right now.

          • Fake_of_Silva

            NEXT!

          • superkarma

I suggest you go seek some professional help. You clearly need it. Although, it is pretty damn amusing watching you get this upset.

          • Fake_of_Silva

            What ports?

          • They Call Me Senpai

“Replaystation” implies that people actually replay the games they’ve bought for it, so your trolling has failed.

And you really shouldn’t be talking, not when the Xbone just lost another exclusive to PC and every game it’s gotten this year is also available on the 360, meaning the Xbone has gotten zeroeexclusivesexclusives since the year started.

          • Fake_of_Silva

Who is talking about Xbox? Have you got no real arguments? Please remaing quiet then.

          • They Call Me Senpai

            You’re still trying to troll?

          • You are flat out wrong

Halo ports. Three of them. Three times as many as on the PS4.

Xbone’s losing exclusives every day too.

          • Fake_of_Silva

Please dude, the PS brand is the one with more “remakes” in the entire history, not only the PS4 but the PS3 and others as well. Don’t be silly…

          • You are flat out wrong

            List them.

          • You are flat out wrong

            I’m still waiting. List them.

        • Alter

nah, 10/10 in human terms, not GOD terms.

          • Sucka Free

yeah, they are just hating because there is nothing on their console that even comes close

    • albatrosMyster

Yes, this is why they still find glitches in Super Mario Bros 3, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time…

Show me one game without bugs, I will show you one game you have not played nearly enough.

  • rllintrllin

Glad ND are owning up to it and are working on it. I personally haven’t encountered any yet though other than the matchmaking issues

  • jcnba28

    But but but Naughty Gods!!!

  • Craig Sloan

It’s good they’re listening to feedback and working on fixing any problems. The MP is truly additive and yeah the matchmaking has been better since the last update. Don’t use that perk because you have to buy it, but I can see why that would be annoying, Something you paid for doesn’t work. That’s never a good thing.

    • bigevilworldwide

They were listening to feeback and fixing problems also with Uncharted 2 annnnnnnnd then they released update 1.05 effectively killing MP

  • albatrosMyster

I have not been able to get to the MP part yet, it’s sad for those who were hoping to try it more seriously this time around…

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I’m happy I decided to wait on picking this version. Hopefully they will get all the kinks out when I finally decide to get it…most likely later this year. Naughty Dog is a respectable developer that will shore these up. Good people.

  • Fake_of_Silva

So much hurry to release for the Replaystation…

  • JustGaming

    GTA5.

    That is all.

    • superkarma

Bu…bu…10/10 games means perfection! TLOU is the only game to receive 10/10 scores and still have bugs!

    • BlackestNight63

I was just thinking of this example. Received perfect scores from numerous outlets, and was riddled with bugs. Now, one can argue that because GTA V is an open world game, that it’ll be much more difficult to fix than a much more linear experience with TLOU, but this is completely related to the MP only, and problems always happen with MP modes. People are arguing for the sake of it.

      • JustGaming

My friend had all of his MP data wiped by a bug in GAT5 after heavily investing in it. Needless to say, it ended up back at the store for credit. Nothing sucks more.

        • Sucka Free

Yeah, something similar happened me with Resistance 3, only that destroyed all of my gamesaves. Thank god I had PS+ cloud backups, but I still lost some of them

          • Sucka Free

buy yeah, it went back to Gamestop that same day

  • pastreaver

every game is early access now.

  • DarthDiggler

We pushed Live Update 1.01.012 for #TheLastOfUs Remastered earlier &
seeing vastly improved matchmaking times. Still working on more
    updates.

Vastly improved is an overstatement, I still spent 40+ minutes just to find a match that wasn’t a blood bath.

  • ryaneagles888

Loved the game on PS3 but a lot of the trophies were quite buggy. I’m back to 100% on trophies for ‘Last of Us’. I never had any trouble with MP trophies, just the SP ones. I’m hoping the problems get sorted out for everyone on the PS4 version.

  • You are flat out wrong

Only bugs I’ve had was matchmaking not working for a day a couple of days ago.

  • Suzaku Kururugi

Oh look, Jonathan Rosa linked to here. Piss off, loser! Nobody likes you. Him and the rest of the Xbots can go back to Twitter.

None of the bugs are game breaking. Match making times were bothersome at release but I was still able to find games without much heartache at launch. The newest patch makes it a breeze.

Sony PR better cuff up the devs twitter. The press is only looking for big headlines and stories. Does not matter the context. We have seen how dirty they can go when it comes to ND and their reputation.

  • DIGITALxALCHEMIST

This is as bad as EA and BF4. ND new the game was broken but still released it anyway im tired of Devs like EA and ND taking advantage of gamers shit needs 2stop or other devs will start doing it ( which it has ea an nd not the 1st) but more will do it and apologize and announce they will fix it with updates months down the line when ur over the bugs and the game…

    • superkarma

Except the game isn’t broken or anywhere near BF4 status.

Have you played TLOU:R? Don’t comment on a game being “broken” if you haven’t even played it.

      • DIGITALxALCHEMIST

I have it and the bugs i xp are glitching onto walls and cant get out..dont play the mp so dont know the bugs there

        • superkarma

I’ve yet to experience any bugs/glitches in the campaign. The only real annoyance, for me at least, is the somewhat long matchmaking times in MP. Most times I find a match nearly instantly, but sometimes it can take 5-10 minutes.

That said, to compare this with EA/BF4 is a going too far. It’s nowhere as bad as BF4 was.

          • DIGITALxALCHEMIST

It is not nearly as bad as bf4 i will give you that but nd new bout some of these bugs should have delayed it a month which is no big deal to correct some of it

          • Jecht_Sin

The point is that unlike BF4 or similar games people don’t go straight into the MP after buying it. This game sells first of all for the single player and that one works with no complaints. Not like, let’s say.. Skyrim. Which was delivered as garbage and took one year or more to be fixed.

          • Russell Gorall

If it is Sony, then it isn’t as bad.

  • Vrasku

guess i was lucky cause i went through the game on normal and hard and didnt notice any bugs sofar.

  • Big Boss

This game has bugs? I never noticed nor had a problem

  • Russell Gorall

They are pushing DLC on a year old game that isn’t even working for some? MO MONEY MO MONEY MONEY!

    • Jecht_Sin

And why would you care? You clearly didn’t nor won’t buy the game, thus the failing matchmaking or the new DLCs are sure a non issue for you.

And yes. The Last of Us: Remastered is there to make money, among many other reasons. Does this upset you? Welcome to capitalism.

      • 3rdworldgamer

it’s really kinda funny that the ones who complains a lot about this game are those who don’t even played it

      • Russell Gorall

Sorry for caring about consumers before corporations.

    • They Call Me Senpai

It’s working for everyone and The Last of Us Remastered isn’t even a month old yet., let alone a year. I wouldn’t expect you to understand that, though.

  • Sunzy

You guys act like the games is as broken as much as battlefield 4 was at launch, myself has had no major game breaking issues other than it taking a while to find a game, bugs take a long while to fix because its hard work for coders especially, it makes no sense to say that games can be perfect when no game is and nor is the last of us. It has its 10/10 for other reasons and bugs have not been spoken about because its not what breaks the games experience hugely. It was very fun reading the comments from Giuseppe :) its nice to see moderators educate those that don’t understand the structure and development and how literally everything works.

  • Failz

So a game not made perfect gets perfect reviews? LOL alright… ND sold people there game and didn’t confess with this before hand? interesting, cash grab maybe?

    • Sucka Free

weak trolling is weak, you should take up a different hobby

    • They Call Me Senpai

No game can be made perfect, but I wouldn’t expect a pathetic troll to be able to understand that. I swear, you trolls just don’t care how stupid you make yourselves look.

      • Russell Gorall

Weird how any non-fanboy response is often “waiting for moderation”, while corporate affirmations from a few users is always rocketed through.

  • arejayy

Its not only the multiplayer Thats lagging its also the story mode. Joel want take steps properly In fact he keep stopping and sometimes he wont walk at all im its 100% messing up the gameplay Naughty Dog seriously needs to fix this

  • Vong Choshiro Her

I recently got this game because I loved it for the PS3. As I started it up, I decided to try out multiplayer, it worked fine at first and I was playing it like there was no tomorrow, but the next day when i got on the game, i tried going back onto multpilayer and it kept telling me to download the free map pack, which I already did yesterday. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the map pack, I tried restarting my PS4, I tried deleting all of the data for the game and it still didn’t work and I can never get onto the multiplayer screen because of it. Is this a bug or is it just my copy of the game?

  • Liz

Why my ps3 dlc doesn’t transfer on to my ps4 for multiplayer like the masks hats etc
