Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare… Sure Does Remind Us Of A Few Other Shooters

by on August 12, 2014 1:04 AM 56

Call of Duty has always been a title that served as the template for some other shooters to be built upon. The controls are great, the mechanics are great, but the formula gets stale fast, and it seems like without something to cast some shine on a new title (like Zombies or Extinction), the games get pretty old pretty quick, which is good I suppose since there’s a new game every year.

Well, we’ve seen games switch over to more COD like controls. We saw it with Halo 4, and Gears of War: Judgement, and Titanfall had very similar controls. So with all of the “This game is too much like Call of Duty” cries, is it finally time to give the game a critical look and check out what Sledgehammer has borrowed from other titles?

After today’s Call of Duty Keynote, waves of people on twitter and other social media have been calling the game Copy Cat of Duty, check out the video below to see why.

Aside from the jetpack I have not seen enough from this new code to make me want to get it. Just same COD multiplayer with jetpacks and face lift. At least add a new intro sequence when a match begins for instance: Players jumping out of a chopper or hopping out of a tank.

  • Mellow_Butch

Considering PS4 users don’t have TitanFall or Borderlands yet this is GREAT NEWS! Destiny releasing closes the final gaps FPS gaming experiences. It’s important to look at the gaming environment as a whole, on a platform basis.

    • Looktoofar

Destiny is gonna fail dude, halo is the ultimate fps followed by titanfall

      • epic_fail

Lol at “destiny is gonna fail”… just…no

        • JoinTheRest

lol why does everyone get so angry its not gonna fail but its not gonna last for as long as you think it will i think we will enjoy it for a week or two and thats it, it wont “fail”

      • They Call Me Senpai

Nothing you said is even remotely true.

      • superkarma

Destiny won’t fail. Activision won’t let it fail. There’s a reason why they signed a 10 year deal with Bungie. They’re counting on Destiny to be their next big multiplat shooter once COD inevitably fades away.

Off Topic: I remember when people used to troll Titanfall for having 6v6 multiplayer. Now that Destiny is coming out; and has 6v6 multiplayer, its all of sudden awesome now. What’s the deal?
On Topic: I think the only thing COD has in common with Titanfall is the jetpacks. Titanfall has no exosketal suits. Nor does Cod allow you to run on walls. But I’m actually looking forward to this COD though. It looks very fun but it IS a scripted trailer though.

    • epic_fail

I think people were bashing titanfalls 6v6 since it only offered multiplayer… but I never realized destiny was 6v6… kinda sucks… but I can’t complain or b*tch till I try it out

      • Vious

the 6v6 in destiny sucks, unless you have an over powered gun.

        • superkarma

Guns in MP are all equal damage. Only the stats matter — RoF, recoil, impact, etc. No idea how you can say it sucks, but oh well.

          • Vious

no, bull&hit. one shot one kill guns in every mp maps. saying all the guns are equal is just a plain lie man.

          • superkarma

Lol, it’s not a lie. It’s a fact…which has been confirmed. In Destiny, headshots matter. That’s the key. But yeah, as far as damage is concerned, all guns are equal in the MP…unless you’re playing in the Iron Banner.

        • Thomas Cai Jinzhan

so a game sucks if you are not very good at it. Got it.

        • SkinnyAssGamer

but 6 on 6 in Titanfall is the best thing ever? i’m so glad we agree on something. lmao XD jk

      • SkinnyAssGamer

its still in beta. i’m sure with the right fan feedback, Bungie will make Destiny 12 on 12 like Killzone SF or maybe even 64 player like BF4 or 32 player? either way the multiplayer in Destiny was fun as hell in my opinion and i can’t wait to play the story and the multiplayer once again. time to kill some noobs. lol.

        • epic_fail

          12v12 would be ideal… I can’t see them doing 64 though…

          • SkinnyAssGamer

yeah 24 players seems like a good match for Destiny. though the maps do seem kind of small as far as the competitive part goes. Co op not really a big issue the map is good size but the map for Competitive multiplayer is very small or at least on the moon where i mostly played my matches. so i hope they at least squeeze in a little bit more space not too much to where you are traveling distances to try to find any enemy but not too little to where you are stuck in a small area almost every time around an enemy. something in the middle. i felt like the map was too small. make is 24 players, 12 on 12, and a little big larger map for competitive mode.

          • epic_fail

Like you said hopefully with the right fan feedback bungie can add or change some things. Still though I cant wait to get this game

      • Vulcan Spectre

I feel like it works with Destiny. The smaller maps would be too crazy if any more players were involved and the larger maps like the Moon Base would just become a clusterf**k with all the vehicles. The outside areas are massive but the indoor areas are tight and very confined. I think Bungie struck the perfect balance.

    • Almighty-Koz

cause titanfall had no single player campaign, also the 6v6 in Destiny doesnt feel small at all where in TF there are times when it does cause the maps had to be bigger for the Titans.

      • Lennox

Titanfall had a multiplayer campaign. And no Titanfall doesn’t feel small. The maps are huge for just 6v6.

    • superkarma

I can’t speak to Titanfalls MP, but some games just call for a lower playercount. As long as it works well, I don’t see what the problem is. Destiny maps (at least the ones we played) don’t seem like they would play well in an 8v8. As long as the matchmaking is good and doesn’t leave you with a stale lobby when people leave mid-game, there shouldn’t be a problem.

If in doubt, I’d always side with less players on the map than more, because it’ll usually be too chaotic. That’s just my preference, though.

      • Lennox

Yeah I agree. I think Titanfall is good where its at because you also bring Titans in the game.

  • superkarma

Not to be a COD apologist, but games take from each other all the time, especially in the shooter genre. All I care about is if it implements these mechanics well and if it’s fun. Hopefully COD:AW implemented said mechanics well and the MP isn’t just an unbalanced mess…again.

    • Vulcan Spectre

And in all honesty COD gave most of these shooters the ideas they built the main foundations around in the first place lol

  • Jamesb0ndjr

It’s fast paced, quick kill, high movement, gun battles. I bought Titanfall and I never play it. So although it looks cool I have found that I dont get invested into that sort of game.

Thus I am COD free since Modern Warfare. Just my preference.

  • Nordu

I’ve never understood why there has been problem with games borrowing elements from games that have succeeded in the past, a key aspect to a good game is building on what what the competition has done well and try to one up that while adding new things that compliment it. I honestly can’t think of one exceptional game that has not borrowed even a single element of a previous game and has used entirely new ideas.

  • Jamesb0ndjr

I want ARMA to be mixed with Battlefield. and when I say that I want realistic gunplay with awesome animations/graphics and First person view.

Yes I have ARMA 2 & 3 and Battlefield games. I’m not trying to say they are anything alike. I just want to adopt their child.

  • They Call Me Senpai

I haven’t played enough to speak on the mechanics, but the controls felt way too floaty for me. It felt like my character was little more than a camera on a stick and it really threw me off.

  • Sunzy

Call of duty advanced warfare has probably been in development at the same time period of Titanfall because that just released this year and now that they have a three year development cycle It actually has paid off quite well for them.. I don’t really stick up for cod but generally all games take influence from those in the same genre, using existing conventions is not wrong and is something that is okay to do because existing games that play at their best with its mechanics being implemented into other games is a good thing. Although it could have been original with some features its still a bigger change than mw2 to mw3 the junp from ghosts to advanced warfare looks like a bigger gap then any other cod.

    • Big Boss

No, AW was in development before Titanfall was.

  • SkinnyAssGamer

yeah. CoD just needs to die already. i’m sick of this franchise, seeing its name everywhere makes me cringe inside. I hate Call Of Duty i hope it dies after this. and anyone who feels differently or likes CoD or whatever. leave your hate down below.

    • epic_fail

But..but… what other franchise tries to sell you a season pass for maps that should be free? Or gun camos for a 1.99? Or different dog skins? Or let you play as a astronaut for 3.99? Or have snoop dog talk to you for 3.99?

      • Ibrahim Chhaya

        EA

    • Big Boss

What? I love COD. Its one of those games that I play when Im bored. Not to mention the millions of fans that it has.

  • Delsin Boss

Yet, Yet, Everyones Will Bye This Like Every Other Years. lol
I See This Reaction Evey Year, But If You See The Sales Figure ….. lol

    • epic_fail

You should change your name to grammar boss.

    • Vulcan Spectre

Eh? nobody is complaining about this one. For the first time in years it actually looks like a good game.

  • Aria68

Titanfall and Call of duty, both of them are sh*t!!! the only game takes true skills, tactics and team play is Battlefield. go enjoy getting invisible in a multiplayer game!!!!
(Arma fans pls don’t even bother to replay, as i don’t even care about that boring ass game)

  • The_Hood_PT

One year ago everybody was upset because call of duty was always the same thing just with diferent characters and settings. This year they tried to inovate, and they did. So what? the boost thing its just exclusive to titanfall and halo, and nobody else can use it? If the vide was called titanfall 2 everybody would love it….

    • Cezar24

That’s the problem. It’s not Titanfall 2. Every shooter shouldn’t have the same mechanics and features. Some may have liked COD because you couldn’t boost.

  • Cezar24

This year will mark the first time in quite a while that I’m passing on COD. I liked when it was set in the present with realistic weapons and characters. I’m going with Destiny this year for my futuristic shooter and won’t need two of them. Guess this means you’re out COD. With Battlefield getting delayed and Rainbow Six not releasing until next year, I might be without a modern shooter for a while.

  • Big Boss

    1. Advanced Warfare has been in development longer than Titanfall.
    2. The Crysis slide was just a regular sprint to a slide. Plenty of games have it.
    3. So just because there is a ground smash ability means it copied Borderlands? Going by that logic, Borderlands copied the Incredible Hulk for PS2.
    4. What kind of Jet pack doesn’t hover……..-_-
    5. Its called ADVANCED Warfare for a reason! What kind of futuristic game wouldn’t have cloaking?
    6. The Griffball thing Ill agree with.
    7. They were working on this game before MW3 was even released in 2011. BF4 came out in 2013.
    8. The event in BF4 causes a flood and is player triggered while the Tsunami in Advanced Warfare happens dynamically.
That video was pretty much pointless.

  • Michael Norris

Tribes was the first game I know that took the fight into the air.

  • Yo Mama

From what I understand, a lot of the Respawn (Titanfall) guys used to work with Call Of Duty games. And Advanced Warfare started development earlier than Titanfall. So, if anything, Respawn borrowed and took liberties with what they saw going on behind the scenes at IW when they left.

    • Skeeter49

It’s doubtful COD copied Respawn in any way. The earliest we heard about Titanfall was last year at E3, they were working on this game for over a year, since they had a 3 year dev. cycle. Maybe they could have refined it to be more suitable to how Titanfall is, but I’d say that’s the most they had time to do.

      • Yo Mama

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I’m also saying that COD didn’t copy Titanfall.
