Ori and the Blind Forest on Xbox One and PC May Just Be One of the Most Beautiful Games of 2014

by on August 17, 2014 3:35 PM 78

Published by Microsoft and developed by Moon Studios, Ori and the Blind Forest charmed many when it appeared at E3, and gained even more appreciation at Gamescom. Not only the game is a lot of fun, but it’s absolutely beautiful.

As a matter of fact, it could very well be one of the most beautiful games of this year. It won’t blind you with millions of polygons, but it’s difficult not to be mesmerized by the art style, that creates some of the best stills I have seen in a while.

It looks even better in motion, and if you don’t believe me, you can check out the video below, which I shot off the demo stations’ screens at Gamescom.

So basically the X1′s only use is to play Halo and Forza… cause everything else interesting is either multi or on PC :/ Not a great strategy Microsoft…

    • Sheldon Prescott

Why are “you guys” on every MS article I read? You should be reading ps4 articles right? Or is reading about MS games more fun?

      • Porcu Peth

        this isn’t a MS article

        • doplerradar

It kinda is MS related. The game is being published by Microsoft.

      • Антон Иванов

Look at the site’s title to understand who mostly reads the news

    • doplerradar

Not everyone has a PC that can play games. Also, people complain when MS doesn’t support PC.

      • Porcu Peth

        all PCs can play games

        • doplerradar

Not all PCs can play games well. My PC struggles to play Project Spark so I play it on my Xbox One.

    • YoItzNarstie

As opposed to infinite remasters of old games and Driveclub, the worst of the 3 big racers releasing this year, but hey it’s pretty so you’ll eat it up, and probably slander games like Ryse that do the same thing, style over substance.

      • You are flat out wrong

PS4: One remaster and one remake

Xbone: three remasters and one remake.

        Oh?

“the worst of the 3 big racers releasing this year,”

        Cite your source.

Ryse legit sucked too, so you can wind in that victim complex.

        • YoItzNarstie

Ryse did suck. I meant that people dissed it for it’s poor gameplay (as they should) yet commend Driveclub. The game is a racer with 50 cars and no customisation, in 2014. It’s been delayed twice too, to add insult to injury. My source is my opinion, and I reckon it’ll probably be reflected in reviews too, The Crew looks to be the best racer, it’s incredibly ambitious, and FH2 just looks like a better game to me, only thing DC does well is graphics, and it’s not like the other games are hideous.

Also noticed you always use that term, ”victim complex”, I really don’t want your pity, I am a victim of nothing, nor do I make myself out as such. Anyway, I don’t wanna talk to you, because our previous discussions didn’t reach a satisfying outcome, you just go off on a tangent and ignore my points. Neither consoles library is that strong, but I perceive PS4s, right now, to be the weakest. That’s my opinion based on my tastes, I doubt anything I say will sway you, nor anything you say will sway me, so is there any point in talking?

          • You are flat out wrong

You actually played Drive Club? I have. It’s a fun game, not like Ryse “Dialling phone numbers” Son of Rome. It got delayed once, by the way, so you can wrap that little lie up.

Your source is your ass. OK then.

Only remake in MCC is Halo 2. Halo CE is a game you’ve already bought and 3 and 4 are straight ports, the latter of which is 18 months old with no brand new content. No wonder it’s the price it is.

Hey, it’s not my fault Xbots have a noticeable victim complex. It’s OK, maybe the next console MS produces won’t be such a massive piece of crap. Maybe.

            Bye then. :)

      • Agustin Freyre

You dont sound like an hater at all *blink blink

  • Aquadysseus

I look at that style of art and can’t help but feel reminiscent of my time spent with Dust: An Elysian Tale. That’s a good thing.

  • Антон Иванов

Art has always been superior than tech, that’s why everyone remembers Journey and forgets Crysis 3. Tech is advancing every day, next game technically looks better than the previous one while art is timeless

    • qqq

except no one knows about Journey outside of playstation gamers and every gamer in the world knows about crysis and its engines that are still licensed. Tech is superior to artstyle.

      http://www.dsogaming.com/screenshot-news/skyrim-new-environmental-screenshots-show-amazing-textures-new-lens-flares-effects/

      • Антон Иванов

According to your logic (“no one knows about Journey outside of playstation gamers”) you are either a PS gamer or you just contradict yourself. Looking at your comment history I know that you are not a PS gamer consequently you type faster than your brain works – the best way to cure it is to go outside, have fun with a girlfriend – try it, should help

      • Sexy Mcgee

It’s like this. Everybody knows about Crysis but everybody knows Crysis is all tech and no design. Ie. pretty but s#itty or… pretty s#itty. However, everyone who knows about Journey knows how great it is.

      • BlackestNight63

This is possibly one of the stupidest comments I’ve ever read on here.

  • TallSilhouette

It really is one of the most beautiful looking games out there with a very polished presentation. Similar titles deserving mention include Black the Fall, Inside, Cuphead, Rime, Hohokum, Night in the Woods, The Witness, Velocity 2X, Entwined, and Guilty Gear Xrd.

  • Dennis Gammaray

Oh wow this really is beautiful its right up there with pacman and space invaders, I just cant wait to get this for my C64

  • Spectre_Status

Thought this was an Xbox One exclusive

    • Vious

      it’s console exclusive

    • Jessie Bristol

No, it was never a true exclusive. It was announced for Xbox One and PC at E3.

    • Fake_of_Silva

Is it releasing for PS4, PS3, Wii U, Vita, 3DS, smartphone, fridge? No, so it’s a Xbox exclusive.

      • Porcu Peth

        no it’s not.

      • Jecht_Sin

        Xbox *console exclusive.

  • Vious

pretty neat game, those who have xbox and or pc can def enjoy this little gem

  • Porcu Peth

I’ll play it on PC but clearly not as good a game as Transistor and Velocity 2X

    • Edward CORE

I’ve never played Transistor or Velocity 2X, only seen the vids, but in my opinion, I think this game can’t compare to any of the fore mentioned games, it would be like to compare Mario to Zelda and Metroid. Transistor seems to be a great game and I loved Bastion so I’ll definitely play it, and I really liked what I saw from Velocity 2X so far. Anyway, Ori will be a great little game to play on the Xbox One, and from everything that was shown, I think I gonna love it.

    • BlackestNight63

It’s not even out yet to determine whether it is or isn’t as good as those games. Cut it out.

    • Delsin Boss

it’s not even out yet. don’t be a troll and please DO NOT COMPARE ANY GAMES WITH SOME OTHER GAME.

      • JustGaming

        This.

    • Fake_of_Silva

I’ve seen Transistor and I’ve seen Ori. Transistor looks like garbage compare to Ori.

      • Porcu Peth

transistor is a much better game and there’s not even a contest

        • Looktoofar

Did this destroys the whole ps library

          • JustGaming

Don’t get carried away, old sport.

          • Looktoofar

            It does until about 2016

          • JustGaming

Nope, not even close. Try harder.

          • Looktoofar

        • Fake_of_Silva

Just don’t be a fool, boy. Ori is yet in development…

  • heitiki

    disagreed.

  • Edward CORE

This is a game that is both made to play as it is to treasure. Only few games has the power to really enchant us, and this seems like one of those games. Hope it comes around Christmas, I love playing this heart-warming games at the holidays, last year I was all over Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, that was an amazing time. I have been in love with these little gems since Braid on the Live Arcade, so for me this will be a great game. I say it a lot, but this one kinda reminds me Dust: An Elysian Tale, that game was absolutely amazing. Hope they also release a 1080p version of Dust on the Xbox One, I’ve bought it on Steam and it still looks just as good.

  • Black Heaven

    Much impressive.

I am kinda getting a kind of Child of Light feel (environment, not the combat) for this, or Dust: An Elysian Tail.

We should have more like these, doesn’t matter which platform it comes out, just let the genre and/or style flourish.

    • Negi Springfield

The art-style kinda reminds me of Odin Sphere and Muramasa for some reasons.

  • Jamal

    So pretty

  • Delsin Boss

man, this game deserves my full 60$.
nice work moon studios. can’t wait to play your game on xbox one.

  • Guest

    Looks boring

  • RyTeOuS

    I thought X1 gamers don’t like indies?

    • Fake_of_Silva

Why people keep calling Moon Studios “indie”? MS is backing up and publishing this game, it’s not indie at all!

      • superkarma

Sony backs and publishes many indie games…they are still indies. Microsoft does the same thing. Just like this game…it’s still an indie. And yes, Moon Studios is indeed an indie studio. Deal with it.

I know you gotta figure out some way to spin it, because God forbid you actually like/find an indie interesting.

        • Fake_of_Silva

Indie stands for INDEPENDENT, how much independent is a developer or game being funded by a big corporation?

          • superkarma

Yes, I know what indie stands for. Apparently you don’t, since Moon Studios is an independent developer. E3 was the first time most employees from Moon Studios even met each other. Also, a game being funded by a “big corporation” isn’t the only thing that dictates it being indie or not.

Ori and The Blind Forest is an indie game. Plain and simple. Stop trying to argue the facts, just because you’re so conflicted about liking an indie game.

          • Fake_of_Silva

I see, you have your own vision of the world and your vision is the unquestionable truth, so be it.

          • superkarma

You’re still in denial about it being an indie? Shocker. It’s interesting, because it was nominated as “Best indie” for E3 2014.

            http://gamecriticsawards.com/nominees.html

          • BlackestNight63

I’ve been having debates about what indie is and isn’t lately because Sony and MS are funding/publishing games by indie companies, without dictating how they should made. Ever since Ninja Theory came with the whole “AAA indie”, I’ve been using that to describe these types of situations. I would say these games aren’t indie because they aren’t self publishing them, but it’s a very fragile subject matter.

    • Shawn

what does x1 gamers not liking indies have to do with microsoft and indies which was the first console to offer indie games, you guys are sadly mistaken if you think the couple hundred of gamers for sony or microsoft represent the gaming culture for said platform most gamers are doing exactly that playing games

      • Aquadysseus

I hate it when I see users who genuinely think a few trolls here and there represent the entire playerbase of a console. People can’t really be that dense, can they?

    • Kazuhira Miller

Wouldn’t be a dualshockers article if the top comment wasn’t bashing xbox/fan base. F*cking. Loser.

      • RyTeOuS

aww you’re hurt, I am merely asking a question, because I often see X1 fans using indies against the PS4, indiestation, $400 ouya, and so on…now I see you must be one of them for you to get hurt like this.

        • YoItzNarstie

Guys right though, every article is derailed by anti xbox bullshit, rather than discussion about the article. No one is talking about the actual game…

          • JustGaming

I agree, but it works both ways around here (more often than not).

          • YoItzNarstie

Maybe, but if you guys actually want any intelligent discussion in the comments, and not the same old rehashed rubbish about consoles, you should all stop playing tit for tat and just comment positively and to stimulate discussion, not destructively and in an inflammatory manner to get at one another.

Not talking directly to you, just in general, it’s something I’ve noticed.

        • Kazuhira Miller

No you’re not asking a question. All you’re doing is attempting to bash and that is all you are doing. I’m pretty sure people just want to see next gen games on their next gen console. Not games that can run on a previous generation. I’m not hurt, I’ll be playing a good game this fall along with many others such as MCC, cod, shadow of mordor, and forza.

    • YoItzNarstie

When indies are the biggest selling point of your exclusive library, it’s not a good sign. I personally think Ori, the escapists, no man’s sky and a few others look good, but the bulk of indies are junk, and Sony’s emphasis on them isn’t what many had in mind for next gen experiences. Not saying they’re incapable of providing that, just saying people’s expectations are on stunning graphics and explosions from their big AAA games.

I only see Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 as big PS4 exclusives that I will buy a PS4 for, and they’re not even out this year, a remaster of a year old game and an average racer aren’t gonna move me, personally. People also make the mistake here of assuming an entire fanbase have a unified opinion, did it ever strike you that the people who dont like indies are different fans to the people who do? Did you know some Xbox fans actually don’t like Halo?! SHOCKING I know.

The topic here is Ori, I don’t see why every article on this site is derailed by the PS4/Xbox bullshit that we’ve read a thousand times before.

      • RyTeOuS

Indies are good that they’re there, there can’t be AAA exclusives every month. Sony’s first and 2nd parties are gonna provide them and that is a given, meanwhile all the Indies are just taking advantage of the ease of publishing in the Sony ecosystem. Sony is not emphasizing them, Indies want to publish their games on the PSN, what do you want them to do, send them away?

They fund some indies because they are promising, and Sony is willing to take risks on new and untested IP’s, where would MM be if sony wasn’t willing to take risk on them.

I got my PS4 day 1, it is not because of the indies and not even because of the launch lineup but because of the fact that i know sony has a great stable of devs that AAA exclusives that I like, basing on their track record, will surely be there.

In the meantime I will enjoy all the games currently out and they are a lot, I am already building a backlog of them

        • YoItzNarstie

But that’s the thing, indies are supported on all platforms, and have been since the 360/PS3 era when the 360 was considered the indie friendly device (due to early development struggles on PS3).

In fact, PC/Mobile are much better for indies than PS4/XB1, especially with the current install base of the machines. My point is, these games are readily available on other platforms, and many of the indie games releasing are actually cross-gen, similar to many AAA titles like AC, CoD, Battlefield, Fifa etc. I like Sony supporting indies, but when many of those titles are already available on my 360/PS3, along with many AAA titles, it doesn’t give me much incentive to upgrade.

If you’re enjoying it though, that’s what matters. But I don’t think the emphasis on indies will do Sony many favours in the long run, AAA investment is where the big money is. Bloodborne and UC4 next year are on my radar, definitely. But right now, I’m not liking anything in particular about the PS4s library, I expect Sony to deliver in the coming years, due to their track record.

  • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

Looking forward to this game. My PS4 has been getting a lot of attention because of indie titles. Microsoft needs to get the ball rolling faster. I am excited for this and a few other indie titles exclusive to the XB1.

  • Negi Springfield

Can`t wait to play this on PC.

  • JustGaming

Reminds me of Trine, at least visually. This should give my laptop a workout, looking forward to trying it out. Any word on mimimum specs yet?

  • futurepixels

What about when I play it on 360?
