The Witcher 3’s PS4/Xbox One Optimization Going Better than Expected; Differences with PC Explained

by on August 17, 2014 5:46 AM 87

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the most anticipated titles for the beginning of next year, and many are wondering how it’ll hold up on consoles compared to PC.

We had a chance to chat with Viausl Effects Artists Jose Teixeira at Gamescom, and he gave us some more color on the issue.

Teixeira explained that the screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO) will be slightly different, the water in the ocean won’t have the same advanced tassellation, and there are other “tiny little sacrifices” that “hopefully won’t make a huge visual impact” but will give a big performance advantage.

He also mentioned that optimization on consoles is going a lot better than expected from the very start.

To explain that he brought up a little fun anecdote: the first time the folks at CD Projekt tried to run The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360, it wouldn’t run at all. It just crashed.

The first time they tried to render Wild Hunt on the new generation of consoles, it resulted only in a black screen, and everybody was overjoyed.

That may sound strange, but the black screen meant that the game was actually running, just not rendering properly, while on the previous game the team had to do a lot of work to even get to the black screen.

Teixeira continued by mentioning that the game is surprisingly running pretty well on consoles already, with some areas already running at 30 fps. While he doesn’t know if the final frame rate will be dynamic or locked, it’ll be at least 30 frames per second and console gamers can expect really impressive graphics.

Stay tuned for the full interview soon, and believe me, if you love geeky tech talk, you really don’t want to miss that one.

Oh the joys of programming and coding… Which I have no clue about whatsoever!

    • theodor70941

This isn’t really programming, screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO) is a rendering technique for efficiently approximating the computer graphics ambient occlusion effect in real time.

      • James

The fact you’re correcting me further proves my point…

        • theodor70941

SSAO is a rendering technique used for light occlusion… And therefore it’s not programming or coding.

          • BogusForLife

You are so enamored by the idea of flexing your technical knowledge and correcting someone that you failed to realize they were acknowledging their lack of of understanding out of the gate and, in no way, was refuting your reply with their reply so reiterating makes no sense.

          • theodor70941

You don’t seem to understand the point I was trying to make whit my comment… Plus, this is a comment section for a article that’s about graphics. If you have no knowledge about it then why even comment in the first place.

          • Rower

Pretty stupid statement you made there. Did you ever notice the article wasn’t technical at all.

          • Kumomeme

what i see you are the one not understand the article
clearly these stuff was about programming dude
            and yet you trying say
“Plus, this is a comment section for a article that’s about graphics”
im no expert either…but i guess that i more knowlegeble than you
1.wherever it was graphic what so ever, all these stuff involve programming…if they want to apply AA,shadowmaps, rendering technique, light and what so ever was done using programming..you think these devs are like bunch of college student who only use tools provided for them?they even customize their engine…all that stuff done with programming…tweaking technique even how technique made was all programming
2.all stuff regarding optimization, booting added effect ,customizing engine, game or running it on console or pc all involves programming..don you know how many programmer are there?

also if you follow naughty dog update about the last of us remaster, clearly you wont said these stuff

          • mobkingDC123 .

“Of of” ROFL Stuttering much bro? But word hopefully game looks good at the end.

          • BogusForLife

Haha, my Android keyboard gets me every time. Stop making fun fun of me me.

          • Rower

            Dude, stfu.

          • Agent HUNK

            NERD!!!

          • d0x360

So ssao uses absolutely zero code and it just happens with magic? Everything uses code. There are also always more efficient ways to write that code. That’s why hbao exists and technically is less resource intensive than ssao while producing better results. True it uses more resources in total but for what you get its overall less and while I realize that doesn’t make much sense logically speaking rest assured from a coding perspective it makes perfect sense.

          • theodor70941

I never said that it doesn’t utilize any code, but what I did say was that SSAO was a gpu rendering technique for light.

If you’re in a game engine (such as unity, Cryengine or unreal) then you’ll see a SSAO box where you can set the SSAO value between 0 and whatever you want the SSAO at.

          • Anon

            Sorry, what?!

Just because engines often provide a simple means for enabling SSAO through a config option, that bares no relevance. That underlying technique was still created somehow; whether it be through textual or even visual “programming”. The end result is still a list of gpu instructions, one way or the other. How does the definition of computer ‘programming’ not apply?

          • Kumomeme

you just dont know anything..just acknowledge it
stop spinning stuff just because you dont want hurt your pride

          • raulrain

In the Interviews, you don`t hear them talk about running the graphics, they say: When we run the “code”

          • theodor70941

Are you blind? On another part of the article it clearly said

“screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO) will be slightly different, the water in the ocean won’t have the same advanced tassellation” This is about graphics, read the entire article before posting.

          • raulrain

that obviusly needs code to even start, make modifications like the one you are citing, because we all asume they can customize their tools

        • Craig Martin

Lol. I also just like the words…When you talk about shader pipelines, teraflops, GDDR, I know what they mean for the most part but when you start talking about how it all works…it could be leprechauns spray painting the game on the inside of my screen while gremlins are putting it in the leprechauns’ bums, all magically transported into my TV and ps4/xbox

      • Kumomeme

SSO is indeed rendering technique but the method they involve to make it runnning and at same time making those fancy technique available on console or other platform was all called programming
In other words this guys not wrong after all..all these stuff include technique was applied using programming too..coding are everywhere …they customized and optimize the game using tools and programming…
make it boot up on console also involve programming
        everything is programming dude

      • Nicholas Perry

Which, is a shader that is written in a specific programming language and then compiled.

        Technically, that IS programming

    • zblacktt

      Great value added then.

  • Will

So glad I get to experience this at 1440p

    • Reign SUPREEM

And I’m still glad I will be experiencing this on my PS4 without all the perks of a PC bothering me at all. To each his own.

      • PcRules

Yeah congrats at running the MEGA high 900P with comparable to LOW on the Pc ..LOL!
I and the rest of us Pc gamers will enjoy the game as it should be played.

1440P on my new ROG SWIFT monitor. The console versions will look and play like CRAP. Low blurry mess with crappy 30fps huh, what a F*CKN JOKE!!

        • demfax

Witcher 3 is already confirmed 1080p on PS4 with med-high graphics settings. They specifically said they only turned off some features like tessellated water that will choke all but high end PCs.

Stop spreading fanboy lies, FUD, and hatred and get help.

          • PcRules

You mean UPSCALED from 900P you stupid DIPSHIT!!

          • Dadrixx

Nope, native 1080p, on par with High settings, and 30fps.
And unlike you, I’m not making this up, CD Projekt said it themselves.

Enjoy your ULTRA HAXOR 1440p GAME 140FPS LOLOLOL on your 1200$ PC, while we enjoy or High 1080p 30fps experience on a 400$ console. ;)

Because guess what, it’s still the same game.

          • Glock36

Devs always say these things but PC games always look tons better. It’s called damage control they can’t say PC will look a lot better cause you won’t buy it..lol

          • Agent HUNK

you must be talking about xbone not ps4

          • Mithan

            You are an idiot.

          • Dadrixx

Actually CD Projekt said TW3 was on par with High settings on PC, at 1080p, and it seems that 6 months from release it’s already pretty close to constant 30fps.

        • Reign SUPREEM

Lol,more power to ya! You conceited PC players will never see the bigger picture. Enjoy your 1440P “PcFools” .

        • Sexy Mcgee

Not the rest of you, an insignificant percentage of you. In fact the rest of you will enjoy running the game at an even worse setting than on consoles… or not even running it at all.

Console gamers have to thank the enthusiast PC gamer for subsidizing the awesome tech that goes into consoles for super cheap and PC gamers have to thank console gamers for keeping game developers solvent so they can then make games for an otherwise non viable market.

          • qqq

if its a non viable market how come it exploded so big since the late 80’s until about 2007? The FPS genre came into the world on the PC, the western rpg genre came into the world on pc, the adventure games, the space sims, the real time strategy games, the turn based strategy games? Half Life came on pc, Deus Ex came on pc, Crysis 1 came on pc and sold more copies than Crysis 2 and 3 combined on pc and both consoles? I mean, if its such a non viable market. Its very simple, if there were no consoles, they would design exclusively on pc, and thats where people would buy games. Because there would be no alternative. I mean you cant really think games would stop existing if there would be no playstation

        • Dylan Harris

get a life nerd. not everybody caresa about higher resolution. your 1440 is shit compared to a lot of others, you dont see others talking crap acting like 5 year olds. nobody gives a shit about the pc master race, all of you guys need to grow up.

        • zblacktt

This guy is so clueless, he doesn’t even rate this response.

      • Will

        Sounds good! Enjoy brother.

        • Reign SUPREEM

Will do,and you enjoy it too on your choice of platform.

    • zblacktt

I’m so glad I can chill in my home theater gaming room on a 64″ Samsung running a Dolby theater surround sound system on a PS4.

      • Will

        That’s awesome bro, enjoy.

  • qqq

basically what they’re saying this is a pc game and for full experience play it on pc

    • demfax

      No.

    • Emirati

oh man! This game is Unplayable Because of that unnoticed difference in the water of the ocean, Goddamit! NextGen my ass!

      • Tauriq Moosa

Refund! Cancel all the pre-orders! /s

    • theodor70941

Basically what they’re saying is that you get choice on PC and that the console build isn’t final.

    • Ominous Prime

They’ve always maintained that the definitive experience is on the PC. It’s the reason the first one isn’t on any console. That doesn’t mean that the Witcher 2 and the Witcher 3 are/will not be enjoyable on consoles.

    • themugen

um, no it isn’t what they are saying.

  • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

    Looking fwd to the interview!

  • Letthewookiewin

    At least a solid 30 please!! :)

  • WhyYouGottaHate

“with some areas already running at 30 ”

    Lol the struggle is real.

    • demfax

      That’s called “development”.

      • WhyYouGottaHate

        Lol the excuses are real

        • Dadrixx

Lol the intelligence in your statements isn’t

          • WhyYouGottaHate

Lol says the console noob stealing the structure of my comments and can’t explain why. Of course a place like dualshockets is full of console loving pc hating dudes.

          • zblacktt

You really have no idea do you? You’ve amounted to a screen name. One which even you don’t even live by.

          • WhyYouGottaHate

Another bland generic statement that can’t point anything out. Classic dualshock users

          • themugen

from the comments on this article, you’ve got it backwards.

          • WhyYouGottaHate

Based on the comments I have it correct

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

I love geeky tech talk..bring it on.

  • Russell Gorall

A Dualshockers page not doused with Sony PR statements? What is happening?

    • They Call Me Senpai

That never happens, so it’s business as usual: you looking for trouble where there is none.

      • Russell Gorall

        How brave of you.

  • Agent HUNK

Cant wait !!! Wish theyd do a trilogy pack for ps4 :(

  • Homer Ruglia Beoulve

I wonder if this talk of 60FPS and 1080p will actually satisfy my overall experience in the game. Just wondering hmmmm..

All these pseudo-geeks who brags about FPS and pixel resolutions makes me wonder if they can actually make games and brags about graphics being the epitome of gaming and the barometer on whether the game is good or bad.

    • qqq

lower framerates translate into higher input lag, meaning the control you have over your game feels slugish and unreponsive, which lowers my personal enjoyment of a game by a large margin. Low resolution on large screen displays gives you a blurry, less than ideal picture which also lowers the enjoyment of games. Have i satisfied your curiosity ?

      • Homer Ruglia Beoulve

Nope, because you already stated the obvious. Of course the devs will fix that problem for people. So yeah, still invalid.

        • qqq

they will fix what exactly? 30 frames max on cosoles, which is atrocious for me at least, having not played nothing like this in many many years. I’d rather not play a game if all i hit is 30 frames until i have an upgrade. Xbox one currently runs at 720p and will target 900p by launch. Ps4 runs at 900p and will target 1080p by launch. They said they are trying, it’s not set in stone. So what exactly will they fix again?

Resolution might not matter that much in the end, because it does not affect the gameplay dirrectly, but 30 frames does. Of course, console players are more immune to limitations like this in their games, having played lesser versions of every game their entire lives, so they will probably not mind much and even go so far as to say 30 frames is enough, or that you only need it in racing games or online fps. Which is not true of course, EVERY game is better on 60 frames and above

          • demfax

Your info is out of date. 1080p for PS4 and 900p for Xbox One as of this interview.

            http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-the-witcher-3-tech-analysis

          • qqq

it says there that a ps4 version wasnt shown and theoretically if they can pull 900p on xbox they should hit 1080p easier on ps4. So no actual 1080p on ps4 as of now. We’ll see. But as i said, that actually isn’t as important as framerate, which is the puny 30 mark. And to add to all this the pleasure of using a gaming mouse and keyboard, turning and moving fast and acurate, instantly clicking in the skil tree, clicking on powers and everything else, instead of browsing frustratingly slow with a gamepad, thats icing on the cake, for me at least.

          • Sly

Metal Gear Solid is all I have to say.

          • Vious

wait, that game that used the 360 assets for the xbox one?

          • FalloutWanderer2077

MGSV is coming to PC? Which SHOULD be the superior version out of the available platforms IF they don’t botch the port to PC that is.

          • Vious

dude, you got killed by your own article. ahahhahaha.

    • Stranger On The Road

A higher frame rate is only useful in fast paced games; games that don’t require fast response time don’t need no stinking >= 60fps.

Let us take an example using a racing game; the track in the game takes 60sec to complete. This won’t change no matter how many FPS you select (unless it drops bellow 15fps because it is updating the world), but a higher frame rate allow you to see more when rounding a carve and allows for a more precise control. With a lower frames rate, every other frame is missing which might affect your control over the vehicle. This doesn’t mean that the game is unplayable, but a less precise control…. not that many would notice.

I come from a PC gaming background (now a console gamer); despite all the post from the PC crowed, most PC gamers have systems that can’t display high resolution and high FPS. This is where the advantage of having a ‘setting’ screen comes into play [pun intended]. It allows you to choice lower FPS but a high quality screen; or a very high FPS but lower quality and lower resolution screen. And to be honest, when given the choice, I would rather have higher FPS over image quality.

      Basically:
high quality image == WOW and nothing else
high FPS in a fast paced game == better enjoyment.

  • They Call Me Senpai

Won’t affect my experience with the game, so I ain’t even mad.

  • Craig Sloan

The new consoles are basically mid range PC’s so they won’t be that much harder to optimize than a PC would be. Nearly every developer has said just that very thing. That both consoles ( The PS4 more so ) are easier to develop for and to optimize on. It’s not the cell processor anymore now that was a different story.

    • demfax

PS4 has plenty of room for optimization with GPGPU and HSA/hUMA unified memory.

      • GPU GURU

You do not understand what optimizing means on the new consoles……

Here is a video explaining for you

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K5Opymw0p0

        • demfax

You do not understand any of the customizations made to the PS4 or how it differs from traditional PC architecture.

This is just the typical “hurr they’re x86 PCs! no optimization!!1″ ignorance by hateful fanboys looking to trash pieces of plastic they hate.

          • GPU GURU

I am not a fan boy. I work for a company that makes GPU/ Monitors etc… and I know all about hUMA, hsa, etc…. I also learned to program on the side. So, about demfax….The fax are this. There is no secret sauce to the new consoles, They are at best low/mid level computers in a closed platform. For the price they are fine for what they are. However, for a few hundred bucks more you can have a much nicer set up. That’s DemFax………. So, please grow up and stop spewing lies, get a life and stop being a fanboy.

      • Failz

You dont know what any of that means.

        • Spoonyrogdrumps

Interestingly Watch Dogs didn’t run or look any better on PC until you unlocked the graphics. More and more AAA PC games aren’t being optimized for PC.

          • Failz

Exactly, some cases Consoles limit PC games. But regardless doesn’t and shouldn’t stop anyone from buying it on there preferred platform.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

            I would agree.

  • Nicholas Perry

Based on what i’ve seen of the XBO version, the SSAO used on consoles looks acceptable. It’s not HBAO+. But better than others.
