Sony: No Personal Information Was Accessed During DDOS Attack Against PSN

by on August 24, 2014 3:29 PM 272

Alongside several other gaming networks, the PSN has been under DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack for a sizable part of the day, and Sony Computer Entertainment provided an update, mentioning that no personal information was accessed during the whole hoopla.

Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed.

We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible.

While this may come to no surprise for anyone that knows the difference between a DDoS attack and actual hacking, apparently many (including quite a few media sources) don’t. DDoS attacks only create artificially inflated traffic to cause a server outage, but don’t actually involve any intrusion in the network.

If you’re worried about data theft, you can breathe easier while we wait for the servers to be back up.

i know. bunch of mindless Xbox Fanboys are going to be attacking Sony even though this sort of BS can happen to anyone. no is immune to DDoS attacks, hacking attacks, etc no one is. But Xbox Fanboys like to pretend like Microsoft sits on a pedestal looking down with their 100 of billions of dollars as they bow down hoping their “Gods” will award them for their service. lmao.

      • doplerradar

Are you usually any better though?

        • SkinnyAssGamer

yes i am. i don’t spread lies and misinformation to try and make a point. i use facts and logic unlike the Xbox fanboy spamming my twitter account with nonesense that has no argument just a nuisance.

          • doplerradar

With all due respect, saying things like “Xbox has no games” or “the only thing Xbox has are updates” (similar things you said yesterday) is not very honest. Or raging on people who annoy you doesn’t help either. It is important that if you are going hate on Xbox fanboys, you shouldn’t do the same thing to Xbox. It just seems hypocritical by doing so. It is important just be constructive and not sink to a lower level because trolling people back doesn’t help anything. It just continues the trolling cycle.

          • Porcu Peth

not very honest? seems accurate to me.

          • doplerradar

That is coming from a person with a picture that has FAIL over Xbox One. I can’t take you serious with that.

          • demfax

In my experience microsoft fanboys are far more likely to be constantly wrong and/or lying, or delusional and out of touch with reality.

Claiming Xbox is secretly more powerful than PS4, claiming Xbox is outselling PS4 or will soon start outselling it, screaming about Sony being broke or bankrupt, accusing Sony of lying when they didn’t, accusing Sony of saying things they never did, lying about non-existent downgrades in games like Infamous, lying about PS4 having no games or only indie games, lying that PS4 is only selling “on hype”, lies about PSN, or delusional conspiracy theories in general.

There is no equivalent to misterxmedia’s cult on the PS side.

          • doplerradar

Know nothing about misterxmedia. This and cinema blend are the only websites that have commenters mention him.

          • SkinnyAssGamer

i hate on Xbox Fanboys because they do the samething to Sony Fanboys. I don’t do it out of blind hate they are the ones who started it anyway.

also Xbox One really doesn’t have a whole lot of games in my opinion. why am i not allowed to say that? its an opinion. get over it.

        • Orichalon Hades

well to be fair, i haven’t seen any PS fans screaming that their server is unhackable and denying such hacking attempt as “impossible” or “never happened”

      • Dameon Percival

Wow you sony fans have no shame, if it was Xbox live you would be having a field day, the fact is Sony is charging for this service and while this can happen to any online service, this is just to simple to not have been fixed already, so stop defending this crap and be real Sony is full of crap!

    • sergeantnorider

Brace yourself…the damage control is coming. Lol. It’s not that big a deal but a ddos attack seems to be a pretty low skilled attack so I would expect PSN to fend that off no problem.

What this says to real hackers is that PSN is filled with credit card info and is ripe for the taking. I’m not saying don’t use PSN but putting your credit card info on there would be foolish.

Just buy prepaid PSN cards. My two cents.

      • SkinnyAssGamer

i use paypal on PSN. i never put credit or debit cards just balantly on any of my devices or services.

      • superkarma

It’s impossible to fend off a DDOS attack. You can do your best to minimize the impact, but if the attacker has a large enough botnet, it’s essentially out of your control. At that point, all you can really do is wait for the traffic to settle down and hope your ISP does a good job at filtering out the flooded routes/nodes.

How does this say to “real hackers” that PSN is ripe for the taking? It was a DDOS attack. Quite a few services got attacked these past few days, including XBL. There were no actual hacks/intrusions, so no information was ever at risk.

I’ve had a credit card on my PSN account since I created my account and I still have one on there to this day. I’ve never been worried about my info being on there and that’s not going to change any time soon.

        • SkinnyAssGamer

i agree with you but still you never put an actual debit or credit card on any of your accounts. You either use Paypal or Prepaid in my opinion thats what i always done pretty much i hate putting my actual information attached to my accounts.

          • superkarma

Yeah, I can understand that. I just prefer the convenience of having my cards linked to my accounts. I’ve never had anything malicious happen with any of my accounts or information, so I’m not too worried. Even if that day comes, it’s easy enough to catch it and stop it nowadays.

            To each their own :)

          • themugen

I’m the same. I’ve had the same card listed on PSN since PS3 and am not worried at all.

        • James

An online service I use to automate a certain aspect on my own websites had a massive DDoS attack.

Eventually, the attackers kept doing it that much, that this service I use invested half a million dollars that cleans the traffic before it gets to their site.

End result: the attacks were no longer effective… And believe when I say these was massive attacks.

Apparently, it was the same protection that the big boys use like Facebook, Google etc and as far as I know they haven’t fallen to any DDoS attacks… Well not recently anyway.

So my point is, there is a solution to the problem it’s just whether they want to invest in it or not.

  • http://www.youtube.com/PathOfJioFreed Danny DeMent

It kinda saddens me that people don’t know the difference between a hack and a DDoS attack…

    • Emirati

      Enlighten them.

      • http://www.youtube.com/PathOfJioFreed Danny DeMent

        Have been.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

It saddens me more than gaming writers can’t even google when they see an acronym they don’t know lol.

      • superkarma

I think most of them know the difference. They just figure they’ll get more clicks if the word “hack” is in the headline next to “PSN”. At least, that’s the way I see it. It wouldn’t surprise me if that were actually the case. I’m sure some just don’t even bother educating themselves, though, like you said.

        • Giuseppe Nelva

I’m not sure if that’s better than the option of them being just ignorant…

          • superkarma

Lol, same here. Either way, the writer/site comes out looking foolish.

      • http://www.youtube.com/PathOfJioFreed Danny DeMent

Saddest of all though are the people I see reveling in the news and HOPING info gets stolen so they can use it for console war fuel.

      • theodor70941

Maybe you should report on what they’ve done to John Smedley. I’m referring to this http://www.polygon.com/2014/8/24/6063149/hacker-threat-diverts-flight-carrying-sony-online-president

  • Emirati

    is it working now..?
    Haven’t played for days :P

    • superkarma

Seems to be dependent on your location and if that node/route is still flooded. For me, it’s still down, unfortunately. You can play offline games, but nothing online, obviously. Hopefully it’s back up soon, because I’m itching to play some more PvZ :)

      • Emirati

Didn’t even know PvZ was released!

Anyway, time to complete DeadSpace 3…

  • Vious

maybe the some media outlets are looking for clickbait artilcle and sensationalist pieces

  • Aquadysseus

Luckily it only went down for a little while on my end, got back to the FFXIV grind in no time. I woulda been pissed if my schedule got messed up because of these little bastards who think that doing this kind of s**t makes them cool. It doesn’t.

    • superkarma

They even diverted the plane the SOE president was flying back on, because they called in a bomb threat. Kids these days never cease to amaze me.

      • Aquadysseus

Damn really? surely you can get arrested for that kind of thing, can’t you? I hope you can, and I hope they do. I remember a couple months back this group of kids went on a DDoS spree and took requests from Twitter, taking down a bunch of sites for around 5 minutes at a time thinking they were cool. I can tell you that they definitely wasn’t laughing when they got caught though, bet they thought they were untouchable. I can’t remember the punishment though.

        • superkarma

Yup, that’s a federal crime. Hopefully they get caught. The problem is these groups usually have a ton of people and only a few end up getting busted. Better then nothing, I guess.

          • Aquadysseus

It’s not even impressive, they do this to try and teach lessons but a DDoS attack literally accomplishes nothing, hacking a site and spilling information is something that needs to be taken seriously but with a DDoS attack? It’s pathetic in comparison. You’re not really doing much of anything.

It’s all for naught anyway, the attacks rarely last longer than a few hours at most and then it’s all back to normal. Is that really worth losing your freedom over? Kids these days are so thick.

          • Vious

first you have to capture the needed amount of machines…..and to take down psn which takes care of over 100 million devices…how many machines do you think they captured in order to do a successful DDoS? yeah, think over that again, they did a lot.

          • Aquadysseus

Sill not the least bit impressive. I’m looking at it and all I see is a total waste of resources to accomplish nothing worthwhile at all. Tell me what they achieved through doing this?

          • Vious

from a guy who has control over roughly 3 machines to say others who have control over hundreds of thousand to millions isnt’ impressive is just beyond me.
and what do you mean “waste of resources”, isn’t that what that sort of “resource” is used for?

          • Aquadysseus

Ah, classic Vious. Dodge the question and bring up something that is completely irrelevant.

          • Vious

what question? I was the only one who asked a question which you were the one to dodge it

          • Aquadysseus

“Tell me what they achieved through doing this?”

          • Vious

looking at the comments above and below I don’t see that. unless you edited your comment after you posted it. in which case I haven’t refreshed the page to see your edited comment.

          • Aquadysseus

Nope, definitely didn’t edit and add that question. I edit my comments a lot but that question was definitely in the original post. But now you know the question, care to answer it?

          • Vious

interesting, because here is the original thread which you claim you haven’t edited:

          • Vious

and @Aquadysseus:disqus here’s your edited post which you claim you didn’t edit.

          • Aquadysseus

OOOOOH I see it now. Huh, well there you go. I did edit my post. But still, you’re avoiding the question.

          • Vious

dude this is your original and edited post: even though you claimed you didn’t edit:

          • Aquadysseus

I constantly edit my posts, anyone who browses this site regularly knows that. I see a sentence that doesn’t make sense so I go back and reword it or I add things to my own comment, like that question. I have no reason to lie, I asked you a question and asked you to answer it several times after having edited the comment that initially asked said question. You chose to ignore the question for 5+ comments and that’s on you, not me.

I think the only one here who is being laughed at is you.

          • Vious

wait….you edited YOUR OWN post and forgot? or you simply were trying to lie and got caught in it?
in either case lmaooo at you.

also I can’t answer for them so you’re asking that question to the wrong person. therefore, i’m not avoiding the question, its just simply not a question I can answer for you.

          • Aquadysseus

Keep on dodging that question, old sport.

          • Vious

that question shouldn’t be directed at me. you should go ask them.
I can’t answer for another man’s fetish or actions.

          • GameDev345

Well you seem to absolutely know nothing

You don’t have to capture machines, you basically have to ping and pile up traffic on a certain amount of servers, not all and you have to send this package info in in an incredible size like 100gb, if that fails you can try and suffocate upstream sites connected to the server which is what the Lizard squad did when Sony quickly filtered out their DDos attacks

          • Aquadysseus

Vious is known to be pretty clueless. He pulls facts from his ass 24.7.

          • Bugdiecat

            That’s a BIG ass.

          • Negi Springfield

            No wonder it`s stinky.

          • 3rdworldgamer

            Vious got back :D

          • SkinnyAssGamer

lmao i’m not surprised to be seeing him actually thinking its Sony’s fault.

          • Vious

wouldnt’ they only be limited to a certain amount few servers if going to simply ping a sever form?
            but this affected ps4, ps3 and vita……

          • GameDev345

What? This affected only SOE games and service on PSN were affected .Even the SOE website was still up while Lizard squad was tweeting their attack

Joe Smedley from SOE tweeted it was being dealt with and their attacks were being filtered out ,I guess this got them angry so they decided to attack other client servers close to SOE and PSN which an still cause some effects

A lot of people still had their PSN up even during the attack and some of them got theirs back up after some minutes. They weren’t attacking individual devices, they were attacking Sony online components which all the devices sign up to

          • Vious

I never said they were attacking individual machines. i asked how many machines is needed to take down psn which takes care of 100 million devices. you said they only need to send a package info of 100gb

          • GameDev345

I said they WOULD need a package info of 100gb for hacking these servers because most large companies like Sony will not have under that and will certainly have more than 100gb to affect their servers

And I said, they wouldn’t need to take down individual devices as they didn’t even get close to that. They only attacked a certain amount of psn and soe servers, which would affect the devices they were near the psn or soe server route, but not the devices directly

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Apparently according to Aquadysseus he just needs a hug.

          • Aquadysseus

Nope, that was before he made himself look like a total fool. No hugs for Vious! You get one instead >:D

          • Negi Springfield

Can I has free hugs too ? :<

          • Aquadysseus

            Get over here, you! (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

            Yay hugs >:D lol

          • Spoonyrogdrumps
      • Vious

weird, how’d they know what plane?

        • Aquadysseus

          Vious, it’s time to hug.

          • Grant A

            Don’t touch the DDOS apologist!!!

          • Aquadysseus

hahaha, I’m steering well clear, don’t worry! :P

          • Vious

            I think you need to:

        • superkarma

From his tweets, basically. They knew where we was and where he was flying back to. He also pretty much tweeted when his flight was boarding. Couple all that together and it’s not hard at all to search departing flights to get a flight #. Lol, poor guy made it incredibly easy for them.

          • Vious

oh, then if that’s so, he’s an idiot.

          • Aquadysseus

No he isn’t. I’m fairly certain he didn’t anticipate having his flight cancelled because of a child who decided to ruin his day.

          • superkarma

To be fair, you don’t expect someone to take your tweets and use them to call in a bomb threat for the plane you’re going on. He shouldn’t have tweeted about boarding the plane, though. That happened after the DDOS attack began and seems to be last piece of tracking down the flight #.

Then again, hindsight is always 20/20. I’m sure he’s regretting his tweets now, lol.

          • GameDev345

why? Because some idiots thought it would be funny to disturb his personal life. What a fanboy statement to make

          • Vious

tantamount to tweeting to the world that your security system isn’t working and no one is home. yea sure, call the people who decides to rob burglarize his house idiots, sure go ahead. it sure as hell mask his idiotic decision in tweeting this to the world because I guess we live in utopia.

          • GameDev345

What? that’s fecking ridiculous thinking, tweeting your flight is not even close to a security stream breach to bulgarize your house

First of all, he didn’t say he was leaving and nobody was in his house, cause he does have wife and kids

Secondly, he is not an important person, simply a game developer who happens to lead, so him tweeting his flight is as ordinary as the other 100 of people who have done it but didn’t have idiotic childish morons disturbing them. It would be clearly understandable if he was the president of an economical or political organisation, or a president or a military head but he is a simple game dev

god you can be unbelievably stupid with your comment sometimes

      • Spoonyrogdrumps

It amazes me too. I don’t understand what people have against gaming networks. If someone here can enlighten? What did they ever do to you?

  • Raian K.

What if this is all a ploy by the government to unit all gamers, as the dude who supposedly hacked it has XBL and NN under his crosshairs as well. Really hope my Mii doesn’t die.

  • Lucas00
  • worryingrash

Yep – this is bullshit. Sorry to you PS guys who can’t play right now. People trolling this are pathetic.

  • Spoonyrogdrumps

OK kids with computers trying to bring down networks. Time to get a real job.

  • Wily

Seriously, those wannabe hackers are playing with firing. Launching a DDoS attack is one thing, but calling in bomb threats and all the ISIS comments are going to bring real heat down on their heads. I know all of them won’t be caught, but if the authorities could just catch one and have him share a cell with big bubba, I can happily say my tax dollars are being put to good use.

  • Jonathan George Anaya

    Here’s the better Question:
When Does PSN Work properly? Between Hackers and DDoS attacks, Sony should take some of that money they steal for PS+ and use it for dedicated servers (vs Bankruptcy Lawyers)

    • superkarma

I was wondering when you would come in here and grace us with your idiocy and ignorance. Please, enlighten us some more. While you’re doing that, you should probably ask yourself why XBL has had the same thing happen to them in the past.

    • 3rdworldgamer

for some reason, i find you’re comment to be funny :P

  • DIsmael85

PS3 logs in just fine and I just got a 4 hour run on Diablo 3 (PS4) online and nothing was wrong for me. Sucks though that some fools out there want to ruin legit players fun. Whatever message they think they are trying to get across falls on deaf ears. :S

  • Lucas00

    Sony: Masterpiece Knack free.

    • SkinnyAssGamer

hey jackass, this isn’t Sony’s fault. a DDoS can happen to anyone, your precious Xbox Live is not immune to it. stop pretending like it can’t happen to it because it most certainly can. Stop pretending to be a Sony Fan with that TLOU pic of Ellie as well. you just make yourself look even more foolish.

  • TheRunning King

SONY announces 10 million PS4 sold short time ago, now a PSN attack, and a bomb threat on SOE president? somethings not right here.

    • Spoonyrogdrumps

      People hate winners.

      • TheRunning King

        i agree.

  • Sly Cooper

People are bringing up the console fights and yet the dont focus on the fact this group is ddos-ing gaming networks and JUST NOW made a terrorist threat on SOE President’s flight. What the heck?! What is the lizard squad trying to prove?

    • superkarma

Some people would rather use any little bit of opportunity to flame the console war. They need to do this to justify to themselves that they’ve made the right platform choice.

But yeah, “Lizard Squad” is just asking to get busted. Apparently, Anonymous now has them in their sights and plans to attack the attackers. That should be interesting.

      • SkinnyAssGamer

Anonymous is going to attack Lizard Squad? when did this happen?!?!?!?!

    • Vious

don’t know what they’re trying to prove but i’m damn glad its not xbox live

      • Bugdiecat

They probably said what’s xbox live?

      • SkinnyAssGamer

i hope it does happen to Xbox Live that way you morons will get the picture that Microsoft is not even safe from DDoS attacks. like you morons like to pretend its immune when in reality its not.

        • Vious

no one is saying xbox live is immune. just saying it’s not happening, that’s all. not sure why you’re getting your panties in a twist for. all I said was i’m glad its not happening on xbox live. I think you’re the one being a moron here.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

            Go home Xbot.

          • SkinnyAssGamer

just proves how selfish you are that you said your glad its not happening to Xbox Live.

          • Vious

dude, that’s very hypocritical of you. you’re the one wishing bad things to happen to another platform. all I said was that i’m glad it’s not happening on my platform. I’m not being happy that it’s happening on your platform of choice…..but here you’re saying that i’m being selfish?

          • SkinnyAssGamer

nevermind. you didn’t mention that last part. i was only mentioning it because you said you are glad it wwasn’t happenign your platform which sounded selfish. nevermind then.

It’s called being passive aggressive look it up.

          • megablast16

If they want to make the biggest impact they’ll attack the most high profile target. Sony is leading the gaming market so they chose them.

thank you for not being ignorant. people seem to think that just because it happened to PSN, doesn’t mean it can happen to Xbox Live, Steam or whoever else out their. If someone wants to DDoS you or even hack you since their two separate things of course it will happen. no one is immune too it.

      • Vious

I don’t think anyone is saying that other’s are immune to it, I think they’re just saying that as of now the other services are chugging along just fine.

        • SkinnyAssGamer

well i was on twitter and some Xbox Fanboy was just being a nuisance. had to block him kept spamming my twitter.

          • Vious

then why dont’ you take that nonsense back to twitter? no one HERE is saying xbox live is immune.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Or you could just take your nonsense somewhere else.
            No one likes you Vious.

          • Vious

am I supposed to cry or something?

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

          • Vious

damn right. now are we done here? good.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Good, so go cry somewhere else.
Oh really what crap are you typing now.
Go dig a hole and put yourself in it.

          • Vious

            it’s clear we’re done here.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps
          • Vious

          • Spoonyrogdrumps
          • Aquadysseus

            Hahaha, well played.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

            I take a bow

          • SkinnyAssGamer

i think you missed the part where i said i blocked him -_- the dude is a complete tool, made no arguments what so ever, he basically just said “PSN IS SHIT” “Sony sucks” “Because Sony Sucks” “Sony is worse the oil companies, etc”

          • Vious

hmm, I see some resemblance in how you usually act towards xbox.
I dont’ know, maybe it was a taste of you own medicine? but that aside. this sort of thing can happen to almost all networks if they aren’t properly setup to take care of things like this….I mean even my old router has ddos mitigation settings.

          • SkinnyAssGamer

i act this way towards Xbox because of shit like that.

          • Vious

            @that perpetual cycle, huh?

      • doplerradar

True. I occasionally come across problems with Xbox Live. The most recent problem was with party chat earlier today in Titanfall but I almost never have these problems. If it is a online service problems can happen sometimes.

  • Vious

so apparently the ddos attack wasn’t done by the lizard group

    • SkinnyAssGamer

      link please?

      • Vious

        here you go:

        • SkinnyAssGamer

sorry the picture didn’t come up the first time.

          • Vious

yeah I figured that’s what happened. I hate how you have to refresh the page on discus to see posted images.

  • Guest

    why hack simply?

  • RealityCheck2013

Can i call these guys(the Hackers or whatever you call them) ‘C****’ DualShockers? Or do i have to LOVE them to??? :D Oh well not been able to get online on my PS4 today but been enjoying a few cool off-line games so it hasn’t effected me much.

    • Vious

is it working now for you or you’re still unable to sign in?

  • superkarma

    https://twitter.com/LizardSquad/status/503667531152752642

Looks like XBL is the new target.

    http://downdetector.com/status/xbox-live

Reported problems have spiked all of a sudden as well.

    • Vious

just turned on my xbox and which is set to auto sign in as long as i’m standing in front of it.
and I was auto signed in with no problem. let me go check the status update on xbox.com

      • superkarma
        • Vious

you should check it again. that’s fixed, not even 2 minutes and signing issues were fixed.

          • superkarma

Like I said, it seems to be the beginning. I know it must kill you to know even XBL is having problems, but hey, that’s the reality. Much like the PSN issues right now, just because you’re not personally experiencing them, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

          • Vious

nope. check below I’ve said multiple times that it can happen to any network.
well sucks that it might be happening to some xbox members but so far i’m not having issues, signed out and signed back in with no issues 9 times so far

          • superkarma

Ok then. I’m just letting others know it seems like they found a new target. No need to go into defense mode.

          • Vious

defense? you said “i know it must kill you to know even xbl is having problems” which i simply put a rest to your bogus statement.

          • superkarma

Yes, look at how defensive you’re getting. I simply posted a tweet of them implying XBL is the new target, then gave a link with now over a thousand reported XBL problems, and you’re over here coming up with excuses.

If you realize it can happen to any network, why are you even arguing this with me right now?

          • Vious

because you posted a bogus statement about me. simple. next time if your just trying to inform others then fine do so, but don’t try to mix me in your nonsense. i’m sure you can put forth a valid point without trying to snare or put down someone else. can’t you?

I know it must kill you to know even XBL is having problems

          • superkarma

Kinda hard not to mix you into my response…when you responded to me. You told me to check the site again, which I did just now…and what do I see? Another login error for XBL. That pesky little error keeps popping up on that status page. Very strange.

But hey, it is just my opinion that it must kill you that it’s happening to XBL as well. I guess I’m glad that I’m entitled to my own opinion. You can have the opinion that it’s a “bogus statement” though. I’m fine with that :)

          • Bugdiecat

Can’t you picture Vious, stomping his feet, waving his arms, saying XBOX ON…..XBOX ON…. over and over, trying to login, but nothing happens. lol

          • Vious

i had posted before but dualshockers deleted for no apparent reason. so here it is again, along with one i auto signed in
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QflkM2JQqQ8

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HR_0KCQr4Q

          • gσ∂-єує

            what a shit disturber

          • Bugdiecat

wait for it, vious makes excuses in 3….2….1….

          • Aquadysseus

            hey Budgiecat

          • Bugdiecat

            hey Aquadysseus

          • Jecht_Sin

Nope. Down right now in UK and Italy as well.

          • Gamez Rule

            Agreed XBL in UK down…Still.

        • doplerradar

I had a problem today. My party chat stopped working.

    • Aquadysseus

I just took a look through this Twitter feed, did you see them making jokes about ISIS? These people are scum.

      • superkarma

Yeah, that’s what I mean about them just looking to get busted. DDoSing is one thing, then you got bomb threats to a plane and posting nonsense about ISIS. That’s the problem with these script kiddies and “hackers”, they think they’re invincible. Oh well. Only a matter of time before they get theirs.

        • Aquadysseus

Yup, that’s exactly it. These children think they are genius hackers when in reality all they are doing is DDoS’ing. I actually think these are the same people who took down EA, Riot, Ubisoft, etc. A few months ago. I read something about Anonymous taking action and releasing the names of everyone behind this “Lizard Squad” account. That would be incredible.

      • Jecht_Sin

Technically they are cyber-terrorists. They are better not live in the western world because anyone getting caught may face many years of prison.

        • Aquadysseus

Huh? You can be a cyber-terrorist and scum at the same time. Scum basically means someone who is the lowest form of life. The people in control of this Twitter account are making fun of the current situation with ISIS, I find that to be incredibly disrespectful and to me it shows that they are scum.

          • Jecht_Sin

I wasn’t disagreeing with you… Just saying that the morons behind it may have no idea about the hell they may have put themselves into.

          • Aquadysseus

oh sorry, I was multitasking and didn’t read your comment properly, took a quick glance and thought you misunderstood my comment when in actual fact I misread yours. Sorry lol :P

          • Jecht_Sin

            Yeah, np.

          • Aquadysseus

            Hug? o/

          • pablocr7

You sure like to hug people, don’t you. :D

          • Aquadysseus

Sure do! Hugs make the world go round! :3 You look like you a need a hug too, Pablo >:D

          • pablocr7

Didn’t really needed one, but thanks anyways. Hug for you to dude :D.

  • Big Boss

Its pretty sad how butthurt people get. Sony announces 10 million consoles sold then the butthurt fanboys go and kick everyone offline then the a bomb threat against the Sony president. That is just too pathetic.

    • bardock5151

Wow you should write a book with that imagination dumb#rse.

      • Big Boss

Did I make you mad, brah? Don’t be upset because its true.

        • bardock5151

Show some evidence if its true. I’m not upset just letting you know what you are.

          • Big Boss

They really had no reason to Ddoss PSN. All they did was cause an inconvenience for the players and after they had announced 10 million consoles sold. Then someone threatened the Sony President with a bomb? Sounds like something a hardcore fanboy would do. Yes I know Im creative but that doesn’t really have anything to do with the subject.

  • Homer Ruglia Beoulve

Seriously Sony? You haven’t learned anything from the Anonymous attack last gen? Geez.

  • Aquadysseus

PSN is undergoing maintenance for me right now, if you’re currently online you might not want to turn off your system if you have any plans. As for me, I guess it’s time to play some Xillia 2.

    • Spoonyrogdrumps

I’m playing Final Fantasy VI right now

      • Aquadysseus

I was about to hop on some FFXIV :(

        • Spoonyrogdrumps

I still haven’t played that yet. I’ve been promising myself to go back and play a ton of FF I’ve never played. I’ve been through I-V and I have a few hours or more into VI. I have such a back-log.
Games I still haven’t played that I have just haven’t started yet.

          Oblivion
          Fallout 3
          Skyrim
          Dishonored
          Killzone trilogy
I know I have more games downloaded but I can’t think of them off the top of my head and that’s just PS3
I have played some PS4 games but I need to get through so many back-log titles.

          • Aquadysseus

Oblivion is still my favourite RPG of all time, that game is SO good. I played it on console at release though and it was great back then but when I played through it again last year I realised it hasn’t aged very well, sadly. I’d say if you can go with the PC version and maybe mod it a little.

Oh and FFXIV isn’t your typical FF in terms of gameplay but it’s still the best Final Fantasy title I’ve ever played lol

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

I might pick it up on steam.
If you’ve never tried Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 I would give that a try.
Morrowind is also being worked on with the Skyrim engine but it’s not finished yet.

          • Aquadysseus

I’ll need to get around to that at some point but my backlog is pretty massive lol xD

  • Gamez Rule

( It was said that XBL will be next on twitter ) and it looks like XBL has been hit too?
    http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-live-status

    • Bugdiecat

Take cover. The cloud is falling.

      • Gamez Rule

        ☺☺☺

      • Spoonyrogdrumps

        tut tut look like rain

    • Spoonyrogdrumps

I think people do this kind of thing possibly to get a job at one of these places. They say see how easy it is to take over. People like that just don’t fit in society
Reminds me of the villain from the 4th die hard movie.

      • Gamez Rule

On twitter it’s getting crazy, but it just shows that no network is safe really.

    • superkarma

Impossible. XBL is such a superior service. Microsoft has all these billions of dollars thrown into all these datacenters. No way can some script kiddies take down the almighty XBL.

On a more serious note: This is what I’ve been trying to tell all the ignorant fanboys/trolls. Even Microsoft, with all their billions, isn’t immune to a targeted attack. There’s really no way to protect yourself against DDOS attacks. If the attacker has enough leverage from his botnet, all you can really do is sit back and wait for the traffic to disperse and hope your ISP helps you with filtering out the flooded nodes.

      • Gamez Rule

Nothing on the internet is safe.. That’s just the way it is.

        • superkarma

Yup, exactly. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the world we live in. I just hope these shitheads get busted sooner rather than later.

          • Gamez Rule

OR they made a point to help build a better network… Time will tell I guess

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

More than likely they go bat$hit crazy.

          • Gamez Rule

Oh there will be no doubt that someone will get the high jump for this outage from Sony. Sony made a point about this ages ago.

        • Dimitri Theodosakis

FBI CIA NSA were all Hacked/DDOS one point

      • albatrosMyster

To be fair MS did improve quite a lot as far as security goes, they used to be the laughing stock in that area, now they’re at least well regarded compared to other major OS vendors.

Now, obviously, nothing is safe when it’s connected to a network.

    • Jonathan George Anaya

Live is not Down or Limited. Where did you get that Pic from?

      • http://www.backline.tk TK85

It seems to be going on and off. Which is how the whole PSN thing was all day yesterday. Intermittent availability. Hopefully these children wont start throwing bomb warnings towards MS employees too.

      • superkarma

Straight from the XBL status page. It was down/limited earlier in the day…when they were the target of DDOS attacks.

      • You are flat out wrong

Don’t worry, Jonny Mantits, XBL is as susceptible to DDOS attacks as every other online network. You aren’t special.

  • Guest

About goddamn time you guys made an article on this

    • Giuseppe Nelva

We wrote an article about it when the publisher released relevant first hand information.

There’s no room on DualShockers to give press to what some lame script kids do or tweet.

      • gσ∂-єує

        I hope so

  • gσ∂-єує

If MS is under attack as well, could this mean the end of the Great Console War? Imagine if both companies decide to join forces and armies under the same banner to fight injustice and ddosers all around the world, then true peace may be achieved. Let’s put our differences aside, and be disconnected, together

  • gσ∂-єує
  • Rower

To the xboner, here’s your chance to be something special.

  • LowKeye

Remember the time when fanboys said that always online is good and they shouldn’t get rid of it?

    • gσ∂-єує

      revisionist history

  • Craig Sloan

seriously what’s the point in even doing such a thing? I mean it’s not intelligent, cool and you’re getting nothing out of it. You’re just being a little douche crying for attention thinking you’re all intelligent and powerful sitting there behind your keyboard wasting your miserable existence doing pointless stuff like this. Also it’s stuff like this that no one can prevent 100% why it’s good to not need to be always online.

  • Jamal

Sad to hear, I was wondering why I could not get on PSN this morning.. Hope it doesn’t happen to XBL

  • PrinceHeir

Well i was able to play online, but not access on PS store.

  • xChaOsNiNja216x

This was stupid. These “hackers” doing this shit for a good cause didn’t really accomplish anything other than piss off the people they claim to have wanted to help.

  • superkarma

Yay, PSN is finally up for me. Apparently it’s been up for hours for a few people on my friends list, since they’ve been playing BF4 this whole time. Bastards.

  • 0P-Tigrex

I was able to get online all day today on PS3 (Dark Souls).

  • They Call Me Senpai

I was wondering why I couldn’t sign in earlier, at least it’s not that big an issue.

  • Nordu

Honestly don’t understand what goes on in the heads of people who bother doing these things; especially considering that they too are likely gamers.

  • Jessie Bristol

You have to wonder what people like this are doing these things for? Fame? Their real names aren’t revealed (or else they would be arrested). What do they gain from DDoSing networks (gaming or otherwise)? They are only down a short period of time.

I guess some people don’t have better things to do then to mess with other people’s hobby.

    • Jamie Lawler

The hackers themselves explained it,they want you to realise that you’re now paying money for the same old dodgy psn…Because your average Playstation fanboy is simply unable to fathom the fact that Sony would ever deceive them, somebody has had to actually point it out to you. They tried to do you guys a favour and you throw it back in their faces lol.

  • Vious

here’s a basic overhead view of the difference between psn and xbl
one shows when a problem was identified and dealt with, the other shows a problem identified but was troubling to deal with

  • MNFNGamer

This is sad for real I remembering having a ps3 and then attack from hackers or maintenance etc wtf sony, then again the online service is better now then last gen

  • albatrosMyster

Well it’s a DDos… that only block access to some host on the internet, it cannot cause any data loss, etc. not by itself… but it can be used to cover some other attack method.
