Microsoft Has Big Goals for Xbox One in Japan; Believes Market Share Can Change with the New Generation

by on September 2, 2014 3:39 PM 171

We’re less than 24 hours from the release of the Xbox One in Japan and Microsoft is going to try and dazzle the local audience with a day long launch marathon, while the company’s executives share their enthusiasm and expectations.

Xbox Japan head honcho Takashi Sensui is confident that the new console has a chance in the archipelago of the rising sun, as he told the online version of the prominent newspaper Asahi Shinbun.

I want a better performance than our past consoles. With a generational change between game consoles there’s a possibility that the market share could shift as well. We have set big goals.

Sensui-san also mentioned that he isn’t afraid of the competition with mobile gaming, which is currently extremely popular in Japan. He thinks that one can play on his smartphone outside and on his Xbox One at home, allowing for the coexistence of the two platforms.

The optimism is strong with this one. .well good luck with the launch.

    • Natan Cifuentes

heehee, you made my giggle :)

  • Craig Sloan

I don’t hold high hopes for the XB1 there but all the best. Some places in the EU and around the world have yet to see the XB1 launch yet. Strange, it will be one year out soon.

  • Raian K.

Not gonna happen if they can’t compete with Sony’s and Nintendo’s upcoming line up in Japan. Besides Scalebound and Titanfall there is nothing that the Japanese crowd would buy the console for.

    • GameDev345

even Titanfall and scale bound are poor representation of what the Japanese audience want

      • Zootds

Scale bound is ma by platinum games. It’s super Japanese. But I don’t think Xbox will do well in Japan.

        • GameDev345

I know but it gives up a very western vibe, like they are trying to cater heavily to the western audience with japanese game

        • Porcu Peth

their games don’t seem to do all that well in japan though
          or anywhere, really.

          • Zootds

Are you referring to Platinum Games or Microsoft Games Studio?

        • Pigeon

Actually, Platinum games aren’t super Japanese at all. I’d say most Japanese audiences would say that their games target the Western demographic too much. Their company aren’t particularly popular in JP either.

          • Swagbito uchiha

Exactly thats why Ps4 doing rather bland in japan cuz Ps4 games line up its targeted toward western audience (with the exception of Bloodborne) there is very little jappanese games right now.

If Microsoft want to compete with Sony They have to bring the most Jappanese shit on The XboxOne, not just some random Visual Novel game i mean they need to have some Hardcore RPG game or an Hunting game like Monster hunter for example that would be a Bomb-ass news right..

          • JustGaming

Monster Hunter would cost them dearly, I gave reservations about that appearing unless it’s like Dynamic Slash for Kinect or something……..

Besides…. Even Final Fantasy did very little for MS in Japan. IIRC, it had the opposite effect.

    • Christopher Gleeson

A good lineup will only get you so far. One major hurdle for them is, and always will be, their lack of association with Japanese players – both the other two are household names in the land, Microsoft do not have this association yet.

    • ImOnaDrugCalledSheen

Saclebound maybe, but Japanese gamers wont give two sh!t$ about Titanfail.

  • GameDev345

Less than 24 hours? I thought it was launching on the 9th, well good luck to them

  • Jerry Hu

Both XBOX and XBOX 360 are already dead in Japan. Microsoft, did you still dream XBOX ONE can beat Sony and Nintendo this time?

    • slasaru

Why always BEAT in your mind? They just want to exist and sell

  • rllintrllin
  • They Call Me Senpai

    Good luck, Microsoft.

  • black070

    Lol – that is all.

  • futurepixels

I hope they crash and burn so Japanese developers stop taking their money and make games for Sony and Nintendo instead… I am looking at you Platinum. Your best selling games were all on PlayStation.

    • demfax

Scaleborne probably wouldn’t exist if MS wasn’t funding it.

      • Orichalon Hades

didn’t that WiiU exclusive from platinum flopped hard too. The one that NinNin fund.

        • demfax

Wonderful 101, yes it did very poorly in sales.

    • doplerradar

Is it a little hypocritical to bash Platinum for making a deal with Microsoft considering both Nintendo and Sony pay developers to make games for them. There is nothing wrong on making a deal with Platinum. It is actually a great move.

      • futurepixels

It’s not hypocritical, just selfish. It’s a great move for MS that I hope doesn’t happen again because I am not buying an X1 just to play Scalebound. I want Platinum’s new IPs on PS4 or WiiU.

        • GameDev345

Then wouldn’t Sony or Nintendo making exclusive deals be considered selfish too?? you dislike MS and Xbox, thats fine but Scale bound deal shouldn’t be the one. I would say the back hand Tomb Raider deal would deserve some disliking but you are being a hypocrite in this case

          • futurepixels

You are not following my comment correctly. I am not saying Microsoft is being selfish, I am saying that I am being selfish.

          • GameDev345

            Ah I see, my bad

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Truth is everyone is selfish but I agree with you.

      • GameDev345

“Nintendo and Sony pay developers to make games for them”

Not as much as MS though, they mostly rely on their first party studios or have a very strong first party/ third party partnership in this case of Sony, where a third party would develop the game with resources from first party

    • ineedgames

No they weren’t, Bayonetta sales even took a hit on PS3 due to bad porting and I’m pretty sure they hate the playstation comunity since they got mad at all of the port begging.

      • futurepixels

The reason your comment doesn’t have evidence is because what you are saying isn’t true. Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising both sold more globally on PS3 than 360. It’s a fact.

        • ineedgames

Just did my research, Yeah my bad. Figured since the PS3 version had terrible programing and performance problems and 360 had a bigger player base at the time.

But still Hideki doesn’t like the Playstation fanbase much

          • futurepixels

I think it’s more that Hideki likes money and owning the IPs Platinum creates. He can only get one of those things if they create a game for Sony.

          • demfax

            It’s just business.

  • Mus1ckFPS

I would’ve said they’d have a chance with scale bound and Titanfall, but after seeing a small amount of the games that sony along with other 3rd party and 1st party Japanese devs have in store aka dat Persona5, YS, Dragon Quest heroes, etc…. idk how to stay optimistic about the XB1 selling well in JAPAN

  • Balalaika

The Pre-TGS show from Sony was really well done. I’ve always been more focused on the western market myself but that presentation had a lot of games and exclusives that made me excited for the PS4 and the amazing lineup of games in the next two years. I really can’t see how they can even compete with Sony and the PS4 at this point.

  • Jacques Onterio Thomas

After sony’s pre tgs conference yesterday Microsoft has 0 chance of sales in Japan.
Persona 5, Disgaea 5, YS, Dragon Quest Heros etc. At first I thought they had a chance with Titanfall and scalebound cause I know the Japanese Market will love those games; however when you have exclusive games like Sony has you have no chance. Unless they come out with a surprise Xbox exclusive THEN that will boost their sales I see some people saying Lost Odyssey 2 can save them, but I’m telling you right now they are going to need more than Lost Odyssey 2.

    • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

I think they know they would need more than Lost Odyssey 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if they fit the bill for future partnership and have some already planned. They can’t be that naive in their position.

    • Dennis Crosby

They still have a chance those games you listed all have one problem. They all come out on different Sony platform also. Platform Japanese gamers already own. So Microsoft still has a chance to make break in Japan but I do agree that Microsoft does need a big exclusive maybe they can secure Shenmu 3 from Sega

      • Black Heaven

Yes Shenmue 3 would be nice, Kinect may add some depth to its gameplay. but I don’t really think Xbox fans would get a long forgotten franchise that was not originally in Xbox.
Xbox needs new IPs, They could start with the Visual Novels as announced, or maybe they could throw in some galges in too. At least enough to boost a bit of Japanese interest. After that they should keep a steady momentum of games every month to keep interest from dying down.

Let’s wait and see on TGS, maybe there MS will lay down their cards. Sony has made a preemptive strike with their conference to increase hype and interest (which obviously worked, wooh!)

        • Dennis Crosby

Microsoft won’t have a big present at TGS they are focused on the launch event Sept 4 in japan

      • Gabriel Ortiz

Disgaea, Gundam and YS are PS4 exclusives. Your argument is invalid.

        • Dennis Crosby

Actually YS will be on on vita also with alot of other games that were announced at playstation pre TGS conference will apper on PS3 or Vita most Japanese gamers have a PS3 , vita, or Vita TV. so again Microsoft still have a chance

          • Gabriel Ortiz

Not even the japanese buy vita games a lot. And still with those high end versions and exclusives PS4 is gold. Plus did you see the poor launch the xbox one had in japan today. Empty lines and queues. Not a chance Xbox One has not one.

      • demfax

Sony is doing well in Japan overall considering PS3, PS4, and Vita are putting up good cumulative numbers.

  • Elitepwnsface

They say that, but it is something we will have to wait and see. Also with this there needs to be more rpgs and monster hunter like games on xbox one and they have to be exclusive.

  • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

Well of course they are going to stay positive but it sounds genuine though so I am excited to see what Xbox has in store down the road that could lead to those goals. I am all for competition but right now its like the PS4 is running all over XB1.

  • josh

I dont think it will do very well ether but they have more Japanese games than Scalebound they have like 5 Japanese made games coming in the next year. They also have a pretty good launch line up with 3 Japanese games available on launch. none of those games will sell in Japan also metal gear solid ground zero has been out on ps4 for many months and is 1080p while on xbox is 720p.

  • Kingdom17

I really hope that MS does well in Japan so some actually competition returns, and perhaps consoles could become a more viable platform in Japan again. *Fingers Crossed* I just want to have the same amount of JRPGs again like there were on the PS2.

    • Soul Less

They are coming, just not on xbox..you dont buy an xbox and expect variety and JRPG’s.

      • Kingdom17

Exactly, which is why I’m very skeptical about getting an Xbox One, especially the variety part, no JRPGs (or a rare few) are generally a given for MS.

  • demfax

XB1 is going to move something like 50-70k in its first week in Japan. PS4 moved 332k in its first two days.

Despite opening week being heavily in favor of PS4, the 50-70k opening week will be compared to PS4’s current average of 5-7k a week. Rabid microsoft fanboys will go berserk with delusional screaming about Xbox outselling PS4 10 to 1 in Japan.

Of course, this is pointless because XB1 sales will quickly plummet far below PS4 in the next 2-3 weeks, something like 1-2k a week, and XB1 total sales will come far below PS4, Wii U, and even 360 in Japan.

We saw the same deranged screaming in the first two months of PS4/XB1 launch, when they were a relatively close 4.2 mil to 3 mil. Time proved the smarter 2:1 sales predictions to be correct.

Well get ready, because there’s about to be a lot of the same delusional, ignorant, hateful screaming about Xbox sales numbers in Japan.

    • doplerradar

It goes both ways. Whether it does well or not fanboys on both sides will troll.

      • Dimitri Theodosakis

Only Monster Hunter 5 can Saved Xbox One from Early Doom in Japan, As long Monster Hunter 5 is Xbox One Only until 2019

        • Negi Springfield

          Please no…

        • Alter

To some extent yes, but it would only reach less than half of MH audience. The first reason MH was huge success because its portable PSP port. MH on PS2 was selling so-so.

      • demfax

Are they trolling, or just ignorant and delusional?

    • LGK

      Shut up derp :)

      • bardock5151

You and your rabid and delusional conspiracies blah blah blah ps4 ps4 some pointless number and sales figures blah blah lol. Are you still broken lol.
        Edit: Woops wrong guy sorry.

You and your rabid and delusional conspiracies blah blah blah ps4 ps4 some pointless number and sales figures blah blah lol. Are you still broken lol. Go away.

      • Spoonyrogdrumps

Would you like a lollipop to take some of that pain away.

        • Suliman العمر

Unless that lollipop has THC in it, I doubt anyone wants one ;).

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

I had no idea what THC was so I had to look it up.
That’s funny. Yeah he would need a mind altering agent.
Slowly over time though Suger or any addictive substance can alter one’s brain functions.

          • Suliman العمر

Trust me, I know. I got depersonalized for few months because of it. Swore off of it ever since.

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

That’s good. Depersonalization can happen even without drugs though. It’s a disorder but most times minor variations of it can exist under stress and anxiety. People generally in this age group have issues like these and it can affect more than one area, especially with people today.
Aging Well by Vaillant is a good book that everyone should read. I think it would help a lot of these people for those that can handle the reading.

          • Suliman العمر

It was caused because of high levels of THC that lead to a severe case of panic attack and after that attack, I felt something go off. Worst period of my life. The medication was shit as well, I stopped taking them after two days. I just woke up one day and felt… normal. I really can’t explain it, everything just came back together!

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

Whatever it was that you were taking I’m glad you stopped.

          • Suliman العمر

I wasn’t even a heavy user, not even a recreational user. I was at a party and celebrating, it was my 4th time I ever smoked cannabis but this time, that thing was laced lto oblivion and almost ruined my bright future.

          • Orichalon Hades

            he’s talking about weed :D

          • Spoonyrogdrumps

I saw that about THC but he said medication so I thought he meant for medicinal purposes but since he said party and celebrating I suppose not.
There are certain types of the chemical that are helpful for several things it turns out but unless it’s approved by the FDA and given by prescription
from licensed doctors from reputable companies I wouldn’t advise it.

        • bardock5151

What pain? What’s wrong with lollipop’s?

      • Pigeon

I’d say as far as projections go, he’s pretty close on the money. The X1 isn’t even being advertised in Japan right now. I’ve not seen a single advert on TV for it. I’ve barely seen any posters even confirming the console’s existence. If you go into major games stores, you’ll maybe see a very small stand advertising it with a video of a few up-and-coming releases, and that’s it.

The console also appears to have even less support than what the 360 had. The 360 had a select number of JRPG exclusives, along with a couple of smaller niche studios (like Cave) supporting it for shmups and adult orientated hentai games. The X1 doesn’t even have that this time round.

He might be pulling numbers out of a hat, but his comments, overall, ring very true.

        • bardock5151

I wasn’t arguing or disagreeing, just laughing at him about his breakdown on aotf.

          • demfax

    • Jonathan George Anaya

You forgot to mention the part where China approved 5 MILLION X1s for launch…

      • demfax

The Chinese government approved 5 million Xbox Ones to be put up for sale. That doesn’t mean consumers are obligated to buy them.

        • Jonathan George Anaya

Still 5 million more X1s in the wild. How many PS4s are selling there again?

#Greatness still waiting to be launched in China#

          • You are flat out wrong

They aren’t “in the wild” if they haven’t been shipped yet, let alone sold, Jonny Mantits.

          • demfax

About ~100k Xbox pre-orders in China right now. A bit far from 5 million, although anything helps at this point.

PS4 will outsell Xbox in China like every other country.

          • Jonathan George Anaya

You DID read the article, right? It states that there are almost a million preorders alone as that figure represents only a fraction of the population

      • You are flat out wrong

Jonny Mantits’ reading comprehension in action.

  • superkarma

    Lol…oh boy.

  • Tga215

They need all the help they can get

  • Soul Less

They are getting beat in the US and everywhere, Sony just announced a bunch of great games for japan, MS has nothing….They are doomed, this is PR they don’t even believe this.

    • joel

dragon quest, persona 5 , god eater 2, Disgaea 5, Gundam, new YS microsoft has no chance in Japan. Sony just buried them at TGS

    • Suliman العمر

How do you know that? Let’s be honest, this is microsoft, they never tease that much to begin with. They only shock you with reveals that you will never see coming (At least that is in my case). IF and only IF they want to enter the Japanese markets, I’m sure they’ll have decent JRPGS in their pockets. Didn’t they do the same with th X360 Launch with a lot of JRPGS?

      • BlackestNight63

Yup, and those jrpgs bombed. They were good games, but no one bought them. The visual novels they have launching are trash imo, but someone may bite.

        • Suliman العمر

Weird, I loved them. I’m about to play Blue Dragon soon, I heard it was good.

Well, knowing microsoft and all, I’m pretty sure they’ll bank JRPGS for the platform like they did back then. I’m all for competition, the more the merrier for me. There’s nothing wrong in that, eh?

          • BlackestNight63

I’m not sure how likely they’ll make more jrpgs again, but I welcome it. I want to see Lost Odyssey 2 made.

          • Suliman العمر

No shame in trying to be honest, I love JRPGS. Main reason why I still keep my PS2 (FFX International, I replayed it 100% over ten times and now playing the HD version, albeit not to 100%, I want to rush this time). If Xbox/PS4 keep releasing decent JRPGS that will keep me happy, I will never mind that :D.

          • Mk333

Same here, main reason i still keep my old consoles (ps2, wii, 360 and ps3) are for the jrpgs. My wii is jailbroken and i put emulator on it and it plays every jrpgs from nes, snes, genesis, and gba!

Sure. They lost Europe, it’s slowly sinking in NA and they hope to be competitive in Japan? Oh well, we’ll see in few days!!

    • joel

Europe has always been Sony. NA is also Sony, people forget PS1 and PS2 dominated in America. Xbox fans like to pretend xbox has always been this major success globally, in reality PS2 destroyed the original xbox in America and globally.

      • Vious

The Xbox didn’t so well on its first generation. It was cut short after being released in just a few markets. The Xbox did well on its second generation and now it’s on its third generation. We’ll see how things turn out this Gen.

      • Orichalon Hades

NA was Xbox land on the 7th Gen. Xbox completely dominate Sony there.

        • superkarma

Yeah, no argument there. I think I remember reading a while back that the 360 was the best selling console in NA for the last 3 years…before the current gen launched, of course.

That’s why I’m surprised that the PS4 is killing it in NA. I really didn’t expect people to just jump ship so quickly. It’s either jumping ship or 360 owners simply not upgrading yet. Either way, it’s definitely surprising. Hopefully that momentum stays, because it’s about time Microsoft/Sony were forced to fight hard for NA.

  • Seventizz .

I love my X1 – best new console of the three.

    • futurepixels

What makes it the best to you? I’ve been considering it, but I think it’s the last current-gen console I will get of the three.

      • Suliman العمر

For me, (Personally). Xbox Live. Always have and always will be XBL.

Other than that, I love Forza, Halo and Fable. I love the controller, I prefer it over the PS4 (Preference people), I like the interface, slower than the PS4 but I like it. The Media update that will support .MKV files is another deal breaker for me.

But don’t forget this, if you love multiplayer games and play with your friends, choose the platform that they mostly have. I for one, do not give a singe crap about playing with my friends, I own a PS4 and a PS3, but I hardly play with them to begin with because I do not care that much.

        • futurepixels

Interesting. My only similarity with you is that I have preferences. I prefer PSN, Sony’s diverse IPs that take good and bad risks, and the Dualshock 4. I’ve also been a gamer since the OG Nintendo, so I’ve grown up with Nintendo, Sega and Sony. The only reason I ended up buying a 360 was Mass Effect.

          • Suliman العمر

I grew up playing the Gensis or master system, I really can’t tell the difference and the PS1, PS2 and later on PS3. I bought the 360 because I loved halo, and ever since then, I actually prefer it sometimes over my PS systems. I own all the last gen and new gen consoles, I love games and diversity.

The thing is with PSN, it always lagged. ALWAYS lagged on my end. Be it on US/EU/AS servers or local games being hosted, the lag was crippling my experience. Albeit with XBL, it was much more fluid and less laggy from my experience. Everyone prefers something. I prefer BMW’s over Ford’s and Mercedes’s but meanwhile, my friend worships Japanese cars. As long as no one becomes overzealous with their passion, there’s never going to be any harm in preferences. I love gaming, I don’t separate any company/platform/console whatsoever. Although I don’t have time as much as I used to, whenever I can afford a break, I will mostly spend it on Videogames. Be it PS3/PS4/Wii/WiiU/X1/PC. You’ll never see me saying this is better than that by a large margin. Whenever you see me doing a comparison, I will almost always add “In my opinion or I prefer” but I will never deny the strengths of other platforms.

          • futurepixels

I can respect your balanced position. You never owned the original Xbox?

          • Suliman العمر

My uncle owned the oringinal Xbox and Gamecube for a brief period of time, I loved playing Halo and DOA, along with super mario sunshine and Super Smash Melee (my uncle lived with us for about a decade when my father passed away, he was my mother’s youngest brother, so he took care of us in some sense and help raise us when things got tough). He introduced me to a lot of JRPGS at a very young age, my first JRPG that I finish 100% was FFX International, I think I was 7 or 8, I can’t recall the exact date but I was young and loved it along with super robots and more!

Back then, the bank screwed over my mother with the house loan and almost lost our house if it weren’t for her, so we couldn’t afford a lot of systems, she bought me a PS2 when I was in honor roll as a gift (which i loved!).

In short, I never owned the original Xbox until 3 years ago, I played Halo, Halo 2, Shenmue 2 and crazy taxi :D. Then I laid it to rest for now.

      • Seventizz .

So far this gen I’ve purchased the X1 and a WiiU. The X1 gets plenty of use. Dance Central Spotlight came out today and it’s a blast! Titanfall has been my favorite game to come out in a while. I like Xbox Live and the interface.

        I just prefer Xbox.

      • You are flat out wrong

He’s Sevenizz the Xbox shill from Gamespot. Ignore him.

  • joel

So many big goals for Japan that they did not even show up at TGS

  • Vious

The Xbox is doing ok on the Japanese pre order line. Might be a decent first month sales.

  • MNFNGamer

Alright Microsoft sells off some consoles to the east, you can do it

  • TheGodlyGamer

i’m sureeeee… Japan would love Call Of Duty Microsoft. just keep doing what your doing it gives Sony more of a reason to continue to be on top. :-)

  • Christopher Gleeson

Microsoft need to go back to the drawing board with Japan, and really build a profile around what Japanese gamers want. Dudebro shooters, as well as they work in Japan considering, are really not what’s needed to penetrate the market. One only has to look at Nintendo and Sony’s presence in the country to determine what does and doesn’t work – a good move for them could be to sit back, observe the market, and capitalise on mistakes the other two make. Sometimes listening is a better move than talking.

    • Vious

…look at the list of Japanese devs and games coming to the xbox one. they actually have a diverse set of games and apps for the Japanese market

      • 3rdworldgamer

those japanese devs are not 100% sure to make a game for the xbox, just like with the previous gens

        • Vious

i’ll only go with what was said by the devs working on titles for the xbox one.

      • Christopher Gleeson

Coming to Xbox One and coming exclusively to Xbox One are two different things. For Microsoft to try wrangle market share away, they need to really up their game when it comes to reasons to own a One. For the same reason I will be purchasing a Xbox One for Sunset Overdrive, Microsoft need to have a killer app in the works for Japan. For all the rage it would cause, something along the lines of a new Final Fantasy, a series deeply embedded in Japanese history. One only has to look at the announcement of a new Dragon Quest game to see how easy it can be to sell consoles with the right title – having developers support you by releasing also on the platform just isn’t enough to gain market share anymore.

    • Stranger On The Road

… they could allow games with the EOCS rating on board [pun intended], that way they will attract the eroge gamers from the PC segment. :-)

  • Nordu

If either next gen system can secure a MH title as an exclusive they will sell like…better than hot cakes in japan! I think one of the main reasons the PSP was such a success was due to the MH series and when I heard that there wouldn’t be one on Vita (atm from what I know) I chose not to buy one.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I’m very interested to see how Titanfall does in Japan…since they certainly love their Mechs.

    • Vious

it would be interesting to find out.
keep in mind that the titanfall bundle is at # 18 on amazon and #7 over at yodobashi
so it seems a decent amount of people are interested in the game/bundle

  • Vious

    as of right now:
#38 on rakuten….only 3 consoles in the top 60: xbox, 3ds and wii u, the X1 is above the other two.
#17 and 18 on amazon japan. ps4 destiny bundle is at 15.
    #4 and 7 on yodobashi ps4 is at #10

the xbox one is doing ok in pre-order sales so far.

    • superkarma

Come back next week when we get actual sales figures. Personally, I’m expecting less than 60k for the first week. I think even that’s a bit high, but we shall see. No TGS conference doesn’t bode well with them, I’m sure.

      • Vious

I understand what you are saying. but the pre-order spots show a decent amount of interest in the console.
also, i’ll make no claims on an amount in sales unlike you.
whatever the numbers i’m sure they will be posted here and i’m sure to see you there.

        • superkarma

Like I said, come back when actual sales figures are reported. You’re not going to make any predictions? Awww, what a shame. I can’t say I’m not surprised, though. Oh well. Look forward to seeing you downplay the sales articles next week. :)

          • Vious

there’s no need to downplay anything.

    • Orichalon Hades

you forgot that PS4 had a fantastic launch pre-order sales. It completely dominates the JP stores, topping the charts everywhere and it even run out of production like 3 times iirc.

but it still sells like 250K+ ish on the opening week.

If X1 preorder doesn’t even reach top 3, then what hope does it have?

      • Vious

it was at #1 for about a week on amazon, rakuten, yodobashi
then i’m guess it at least have some hope, right?

        • Orichalon Hades

a sliver i guess. Because if even PS4 with all its hype only sells that much on Japan, couldn’t really see X1 gets half of that number let alone came close to it.

          But we’ll see.

          • Vious

I hear what you’re saying, but we’ll see how things turns out

        • superkarma

Shooting to the #1 spot as soon as preorders are made available isn’t much of an accomplishment.

The 360 has a ~1.5 million install base. I’m sure those current owners (at least some of them) are interested, but expecting anything more than that is just far-fetched.

      • Thomas Cai Jinzhan

Typical Japanese home are too small to accommodate the Xbox….and i am not even being snarky..

        • Vious

          why do you say that?

          • Thomas Cai Jinzhan

you don’t really understand japanese homes do you? Average japanese, especially those staying in cities, lived in shoebox units……and with small homes means a small tv cabinet…….and with a small tv cabinet means less space to accomodate stuff….i think nobody can even argue that the xbox one is BIG. Lucky they took out the kinect because the average japanese have no space for the kinect to work properly.

i know this because i am an asian in singapore. The houses in singapore are not as small as japan’s but no better. 70% of singaporeans lived in units. We don’t have gardens and we certainly don’t have ‘backyards’ if you are asking.

    • Stranger On The Road

while I usually avoid discussions regarding sales figures (they don’t tell you much about the profitably of a game); I’d say this: Don’t read too much into those charts.

Both the PS4 and Wii U don’t sell very well each week in Japan, for either to be close to the XB1 on the chart is a very bad indication. But let me add: there is a chance that those charts don’t include pre-orders that were made once the pre-order for the XB1 was opened.

Well, we should know within the next 2 weeks how the launch of the XB1 has faired.

      • Vious

the list is based on current pre-orders/sales

    • You are flat out wrong

PS4, Destiny and Bloodborne and running over the Xbone on the same charts.

      • Vious

bloodborne is a game. I was talking in terms of console.
ps4 destiny bundle is above the xbox one….it’s the white ps4 edition, what do you expect?
the regular ps4 is at #27, sort of puts things into perspective doesn’t it?
        – the funny thing is sony bought out destiny (exclusive) in japan. I don’t understand how sony can make a multiplatform game exclusive for a certain market/region.

  • BlackestNight63

I feel like this is a lost cause. Focus more on Europe than Japan because that’s not a market that MS is going to do well in. Let it go.

  • Lennox

Funny how new, awesome JRPGs still can’t accumulate more comments than an Xbox article.

    • Millenia Blue

Don’t you see the HATERS here?!!

  • Jonathan Perkins

Ehh…A lot of Japanese retailers have sold out xbox ones, over a month ago, when it was still on pre order.

  • Millenia Blue

Microsoft should allow Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox One! The beta could have came out on launch. ( like the PS4’s launch! )

    • Swagbito uchiha

that would be a good start..

      • Millenia Blue

Yes! It would have been one of Microsoft’s best moves.

        • Swagbito uchiha

and…. for some strange reason microsoft weird-ass policy won’t allow cross platform gameplay

          • Millenia Blue

I know! even tho Final Fantasy 11 on Xbox 360 is STILL playable and still doing the cross platform gameplay right now!

  • Mark

Good stuff. Hopefully Microsoft does well in Japan this gen. Doesn’t need to beat Sony there, just better than last gen. It would be pretty cool to see Japan competitive in the console space.

    • bardock5151

I would love to see returning ip’s like lost odyssey, maybe a HD shenmue pack and MechWarrior would make some noise for them and could allow a more competitive arena.

    • demfax

It’s going to sell worse than 360 in Japan long term, not better.

  • ImOnaDrugCalledSheen

“With a generational change between game consoles there’s a possibility that the market share could shift as well.”

LOL, dont count on it Takashi.

  • ambleThought

All the best XboxOne for your launch in JP.

  • GeorgeAlbanis

It has no chance. With Nintendo and Sony around it will never happen.

  • jean-Alexandre thibault

Hopefully they just throw tons of money to great developers. Then the PS4 can benefit 6 months later …

  • Tony

Not going to happened… If XBOX One didn’t sell that much in NA, what makes them think that it would sell else where?

IMO, I think MS thinks that if they do timing exclusive or exclusive
games for xbox one, people going to buy the console… guess what…
    didn’t work…
