As Xbox One Launches in Japan, Akihabara’s Gamers Really Aren’t Standing in Line (UPDATED)

The sun has finally risen on an uncharacteristically mild September 4th in Tokyo, and stores are finally about to open with their shelves loaded with Xbox One consoles.

Yet, perhaps as a sign of changing times, Japanese gamers aren’t standing in line at the gaming mecca of Akihabara like they used to do at previous console launches.

The Yodobashi Camera store in Akihabara is the “go to” place to buy a new console in Tokyo, which is why the shop always gets organized to stand long queues. This time, though, it’s simply not happening as you can see from the picture below, shot between 7 and 8 AM by various Twitter users.

Things aren’t very different at another popular store, Sofmap, which opens a bit later:

The lack of queues shouldn’t probably be chalked completely to the Xbox One itself, but also to a generational shift in the purchasing habits of Japanese gamers. Online shopping and pre-orders have become more and more widespread in the archipelago of the rising sun, as more and more day one purchases shift to Amazon and similar outlets and away from brick and mortar stores.

Ultimately we’ll have to wait for next Wednesday with the release of the Media Create charts to know how the Xbox One’s Japanese launch is really going.

The spectacular queues snaking around the block we used to see at the times of past consoles and big games like Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter may have become a thing of the past. Times change.

Update:
at the end, just before opening, a few people did show at the Yodobashi Akihabara store. I guess you could call this a mini-queue.

PS4 has many great games that gamers love. That’s why it’s 10+ million in sales and growing. Sony’s large number of well funded 1st parties will ensure PS4 has a ton of great AAA exclusives, as many or more than PS3.

PS4/Sony exclusives Jun-Dec: The Last of Us Remastered, Driveclub, LittleBigPlanet 3, Infamous: First Light, Samurai Warriors 4, Natural Doctrine, Guilty Gear Xrd, Singstar, and lots of indies (Resogun DLC, Counterspy, Hohokum, Velocity 2X, etc.).

PS4/Sony exclusives 2015 (announced): Bloodborne, The Order, Ratchet & Clank Remastered, Uncharted 4, Let It Die, Deep Down, and lots of indies.

PS4 has 35+ AAA games from July to December 2014. Most of those are multiplatform but there’s no shortage of AAA games for PS4 owners.

PS4 games rated 73+ on Metacritic not on XB1: Final Fantasy XIV, Resogun, Transistor, MLB 14, Injustice, Trine 2: Complete Story, TowerFall Ascension, Infamous 2nd Son, Don’t Starve, flower, War Thunder, DC Universe Online, Dead Nation, Dynasty Warriors 8, MotoGP 14, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, TLOU Remastered, The Swapper, ZEN Pinball 2, Star Wars Pinball, The Pinball Arcade, Pure Pool, Fez, Rogue Legacy, Sound Shapes, Sportsfriends, PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, SteamWorld Dig, Awesomenauts Assemble, Titan Attacks, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Escape Plan, Outlast: Whistleblower, Hohokum, Velocity 2X.

1st/2nd party studios include Japan Studio, Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog, SCE Bend, SCE San Diego, SCE Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, Pixel Opus, Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Games, Guerrilla Cambridge, SCE London, Media Molecule, Ready at Dawn, Quantic Dream, etc.

Sony’s largest 1st party studios like Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, and Santa Monica are working on unrevealed AAA games. Expect big 1st party AAA reveals in the future. Sony’s 1st parties are well funded and the games division is making a profit.

Sony showed the following games at Gamescom 2014:

Sony exclusives: The Tomorrow Children, Until Dawn, Tearaway Unfolded, Alienation, WiLD, Rime, DriveClub, The Order: 1886, Bloodborne, LittleBigPlanet 3

Timed console exclusives: Dreamfall Chapters, HellBlade, The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter, Volume, HollowPoint, Runemaster, Nom Nom Galaxy, Pix the Cat, Papers Please, In Space We Brawl, Ether One, Qube 2, Snow

Multiplatform games: Silent Hills (P.T. playable teaser), FarCry 4, Destiny, Shadow Of Mordor

Sony announced a ton of new Japanese games for PS4 at TGS 2014. The majority of them will never be on Xbox, same with PS3 Japanese games and 360.

PS4 has a steady stream of games all year. According to Listwar it’s now 112 PS4 games to 68 XB1 games. The fact is PS4 has nearly twice as many games as XB1, and many of those are rated 73+ on Metacritic.

PS4 is selling on price/performance, better PR and global appeal, long term 1st party support, large number of 1st party studios, more total games and dev support including Japanese and indie devs, wider variety of games, improved PSN since the PS3 days, and PS+ value. It’s seen as the best console for multiplatform games.

well looking at his comment above, he actually didn’t say he didn’t buy sony consoles, he just said “not all of us.”

Now…learn a lesson from all of this and back down when you know you’ve already lost. Don’t embarrass yourself further by reaching like a fool. Cmon now.

          • Vious

not sure why you’re posting a ton of links. I said looking at his comment above. meaning i’m looking at the comment:

Doesn’t change the fact that the Xbox One is a great machine.
Not all of us buy Sony consoles.

so in reality your those links are actually meaningless
oh also, I didn’t read them.

          • superkarma

Lol, it’s actually quite pathetic how stubborn you are. You simply refuse to admit when you’re wrong. I mean, damn. I’ve seen this plenty of times in the past with you…but geez dude, I figured you would’ve learned your lesson by now.

It’s ok. I made you look like the pathetic child that you are…once again. Everyone got to see it…once again. I’m sitting here laughing at you…once again. All in all, this was a job well done. Thanks for deciding to chime in and embarrass yourself…once again.

          • They Call Me Senpai

His links are actually meaningful because they prove what he’s saying, while disproving what you seem hellbent on remaining blind to, so it’s no surprise that you didn’t read them. That comment you quoted, plus his comment to another user are evidence that he doesn’t, and has probably never owned a PlayStation.

I get that these pictures upset you after months of obsessively tracking pre-orders across multiple sites these past few months, but that’s no excuse.

Not really surprised, XBOX has always been about as popular as a fart in a lift in Japan. To be fair though they’re not that interested in PS4 either, it’s all about mobile gaming over there these days.

    • mattc2310

Jesus, do they not have big screens to unwind in front of at the end of the day over there? Gaming on tiny screens is terrible!

  • Miami Prodigy

Wow, this is the first article where I’m actually disappointed in dualshockers. This is absolute flame bait. This is something that even ign wouldn’t do. I really mean it when I say that I’m disappointed in dualshockers…. I really thought this website was fair journalism.

And before I forget “you say more and more day one purchases shift to amazon” but yet you fail to mention that the Xbox one day one edition on amazon japan is the number 1 selling console, while the Kinect-less Xbox one is number 4…. And while all the other gaming websites are reporting it….. except dualshockers…. you forgot to mention that forza 5 is free from Thursday til Sunday where you can earn achievements and play online.

    • superkarma

Damn, they’re giving away Forza…again? At this point, they might as well just make Forza and Titanfall free altogether.

      • Vious

        you are baiting.

      • Miami Prodigy

This is for anyone who has an Xbox one…

if you have an Xbox live gold membership you can download forza 5 for free and play the full game from Thursday to Sunday. Earn achievements, play online etc.

        • Vious

just messaged my friends who doesn’t own forza yet.

    • Agree they should have mentioned that, but TBH I still think Dualshockers is waaay more fair and reasoned than many clickbait sites. They’ve also run an article showing how popular the release has been among gamers, so there is a good balance

this result could affect xbox one’s Future[mostly Japanese developers who games on that consoles[instead going on xbox one its going ps4 or wii U[for example Idolmasters Xbox360exclusive its changed to PS3/Ps4 exclusive or multi] or some Announced games to be released on xbox one in japan could change to multiplatform due lack of sales

dont forget chain effect could change US sales

i guess it would change after the release of 5pb visual novel “Psycho-Pass”

    • Orichalon Hades

VN usually doesn’t move that much unit

      • majestix1988

yup….but fans would buy it….the mostly reason why xbox1 doesnt sale well due Dead Rising 3 now entering on PC[japanese have good pc due their MMO fever is good too like FFXIV/other korean MMO due to that PC version of Dead Rising 3 could sell well on PC not on Xbox one]

exclusive make a console to be unique to other console if one game to be changed on multiplat it starting to affect on sales

You should see the packed lines for the PS4 launch. This isn’t a shift in how Japanese gamers buy consoles, it’s a sign of how pitiful the Xbox one will commercially perform there.

I sure hope there weren’t any fanboys that thought the Japanese launch would boost sales.

    • You mean the fake laugh-track? Yeah, they sure were excited.

      • demfax

That is normal for Japan. It’s a non-issue. Pathetic and transparent fanboy deflection away from Xbox’s sales in Japan and tier 2 countries.

Keep grasping at straws and being constantly wrong about anything to do with sales. You must love eating mountains of crow.

      • You are flat out wrong

Still salty the tier 2 launch would be a bust like we said it would be?

Don’t worry, just two more months until Halo ports.

    • demfax

One of them just replied to you.

    • DLConspiracy//

I think the only people worried if Japan sells well enough is Microsoft and Ps fanboys. Otherwise those who buy an Xbox one can and will fully enjoy the console even if they are selling less than PS4.

Last I checked I didn’t need a line in Japan or sales report stapled to my TV in order to enjoy either of my consoles.

      • Spencer

Very true, but you have to think about it this way – if Japan represent 0.00000001 percent of their revenue, why would they invest ANY money to improve the system there or nail down great exclusives for that market? That has a tangible impact on the enjoyment of the console.

        • DLConspiracy//

*shrug* maybe because its not a horrible system but its not at the top of trends right now. Maybe trends set the popularity of a product in Japan. I don’t really know the market out there. It could be price or size. If you think about it though its still money coming in. Even if it breaks even . you still have to try.

  • such.wow

Oh. In that case, nope. And you’ll probably never hear Xbone numbers ever again.

          • They’ll say them in their quarterly/annual financial reports, but was hoping for something more periodic in b/w…

          • You are flat out wrong

Last quarter they combined 360 and Xbone numbers unfortunately.

  • XanderZane

In anyone really surprised? The XBox 360 sold 1.6 million in Japan, which was impressive for a U.S. game console. I doubt the XB1 will reach those numbers. The biggest surprise is the PS4 is doing crap in Japan. The Wii U is outselling the PS4 on a weekly basis. Very sad.

  • DLConspiracy//

I wonder how many “gamers” are celebrating the early demise of Xbox because of an empty line in Japan? I am sure that will be a community building party. Or a nice way to say I told you so to the vocal minority. Seems lately any news is a chance to take a blow at MS or the people who enjoy playing on its system. Not sure why the community has become such bullies in the comments. Its like they are not satisfied that PS4 is doing well and selling more. They want to try and ruin anyone’s enjoyment of any other console be it Nintendo or Xbox. Not sure what people are trying to prove with such actions. I still enjoy my Xbox one maybe even more than my PS4 currently. I still don’t find most of these comments necessary or shining examples of community.

“the community has become such bullies in the comments”
Were you in a coma during the last generation?
      “lololol PS3 haez no gaems”
Thing is, just like the beginning of last gen, it’s not just PS4 owners who are laughing. The most hilarious aspect of this generation so far has been the attitude of Xbone gamers. Prior to launch they were telling us how they were getting the better console, then it launched and actually performance didn’t matter, then it got crushed in sales and sales didn’t matter, now they all claim to own PS4s but never use them. lol
It’s like the scrawny kid who goes around picking fights and then goes to the teacher when he loses them.

I see your point. So it was wrong of those Xbox gamers to do that last generation to all the Ps fans but its OK for all the ps4 fans to be like Xbox fans were last gen now. I never understand why people use last generation as an excuse to bully people. Its like well the “Xbox fans picked on me last gen. I didn’t like it. that was really mean of them”. Yet, it wasn’t every single Xbox fan last gen. Nor was it right of those who par took in that behavior then either. Let’s act like them? Essentially what you and anyone who uses that as an excuse are saying is that it was never about being picked on to begin with. You were just jealous you were not on top. Now that You are on top. That type of behavior is OK because now you are in control and not jealous. So one can’t complain about last gen if they are acting like the bully this gen. Surely that would be childish. Especially outright pointing to yourself as one of those types. I mean if you have a bone to pick with a few from last gen that are still around. By all means take it up with them but don’t hold it against every person who owns an Xbox now. That seems to be unfair. Especially since I wasn’t here for the childish antics last gen and I also own both consoles for this gen.

Roll back time 6 or so years and it’s the exact opposite, with Xbox gamers bullying Playstation. It’s the grand cycle, don’t get butthurt just because it’s Microsofts turn to take some lumps.

      • DLConspiracy//

Wasn’t here last gen for all the hypocritical nonsense. I would have said the same thing then and I probably wouldn’t use it as a shield to excuse my own behavior either.

    • Jecht_Sin

It isn’t against competition, it’s against MS. I actually wish the Wii U will sell more, crushing the XBone even further, go figure. 😀

      • DLConspiracy//

Hopefully that MS hatred will help the gamers who just so happen to wander into the comments section. I am sure they will fully understand why MS is this evil corporation. Meanwhile there are oil companies that get less hatred than MS.

I wonder if you realize everyone else has been putting up with 10+ months of THIS?

Spare everyone your victim complex. Microsoft fanboys have been using the “more countries” excuse pervasively in every single sales article, often while spreading lies and hatred. The crow is well deserved.

      • DLConspiracy//

I never said it isn’t happening on both sides but come on man. PS4 is doing well. The ones that act that way while its doing well just blow my mind. Its like really? Is it that necessary. Either way I don’t agree with either side doing it. I still see people kicking fans while they are down. Trying to push the fact that Xbox is selling less rather bullyish-like. There is no victimology about it. It happens a lot more than it needs to and all it takes is a few people on either side to nip it in the bud.

I love this article, an the hilarity of it. All of these pictures are of the same place, with the final picture showing people in line, except for one picture, and it was obviously taken before 2014-08-28 as evidenced by the game launch announcement over their doors.

Xbox is doing well here in the uk – xbox is king

  • NeoMahi

Five Americans and two Japanese dudes. Oh, man ouch! The NeoGaf post was was of the Twitter Image Posted by Aaron Greenberg where it’s said the Xbox One was a success in Japan’s launch event. It’s a crowded room of people but, they’re all white and look like they’ve but cut and pasted and low res in a Gran Turismo sort of fashion. Funny. Very much so a joke, but funny and some gullible people will buy into it, it’ll spread like wild-fire and Micro$haft will be screwed again. Sorrry Microsoft. I don’t think I have the heart to laugh at you. Japan isn’t going to happen when the 360 was far more popular amongst consumers and you were only selling a few hundred a week.

PS4 fella’s, we should be seeing Sunset Overdrive: Rampage Edition sometime next year.

    In Brazil Xbox is king!
