Microsoft Removes Japanese Batman: Arkham Knight’s Page, While The Crew’s JP Beta Is Also PS4 Exclusive

by on September 9, 2014 2:31 PM 66

This morning Warner Bros. announced that Batman: Arkham Knight will be a PS4 exclusive in Japan, but didn’t mention if said exclusivity would be permanent or temporary.

Apparently, it’s a rather permanent affair, as Microsoft was forced to remove its official page dedicated to the game, which still scheduled the Xbox One version for 2015 for a few hours after the announcement. You can see it above for the posterity. Now it simply leads to a broken link.

But that’s not all: Ubisoft Japan also opened today the registrations for the Japanese beta of The Crew, and the publisher announced that the testing will be done exclusively on PS4 as well.

For the moment the game itself is still mentioned as multiplatform for PS4, Xbox One and PC locally, also confirmed by the official site, and hopefully for Japanese Xbox and PC fans it’ll stay that way.

The removal of Batman‘s Xbox One page several hours after the announcement certainly begs the question on what happened behind the scenes, especially since Microsoft publicized the game during the console’s presentation conferences just a couple months ago.

Did Warner Bros. fail to notify Microsoft about the exclusivity decision in time, or maybe the timing of the announcement was decided to avoid influencing the console’s local launch last week?

Most probably, we’ll never know.

That’s not good for Microsoft at all. MS Japan should help with localization in Japan to stop losing games. I can understand why some companies are doing just the PS4 version because they anticipate the X1 is gonna do just like the X360. But MS needs to step in and say, “Hey you can do the PS4 version, but we’ll handle the release of the X1 version ourselves.”

    • majestix1988

MS wrong move mostly they buy a game instead making a game to be exclusive for them even creating a sequel for them[Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon this games make 360 been save comatose state]

  • RyTeOuS

it must suck to be an xbox only gamer in japan

    • majestix1988

technically mostly gamer buy it on PS4/PC version than sticking to a console with bad local support

    • Gaikai

At this point it must suck to be a xbox gamer anywhere

  • Gamist

    Sony’s revenge for Tomb Raider?

    • ncifuentes

sounds to me that Sony isn’t really involved in this. For sure Destiny.

      • majestix1988

i would say they are mostly saving their own money than risking a 100k or more copies on xbox one on japan

      • http://www.techreviewshop.com/ JP

lol what? If they are the sole publisher then they are behind it. Yet no one is screaming about 3rd party exclusives here. No wonder MS isn’t going to keynote at TGS they are being persecuted for being an American company.

        • Creed

          Isn’t WB the publisher?

          • Anders

Not in Japan it’s the same with Destiny. Activision choose to let Sony publish Destiny in Japan and because of that it’s PlayStation exclusive.

          • Creed

            Oh ok got you

        • GameDev345

No Sony aren’t the publishers, WB Japan are the sole publisher of the game over there and make the decision with the game

It is not the same as what MS have done, this is a case of WB not willing to waste money and resources on a console doing badly in Japan, plus if you cant pick up the game in Japan, you can easily import it, unlike the TR xbox exclusive so there is no reason to scream about anything

      • GameDev345

Sony are publishing Destiny in Japan, so they have the rights to it there

        • someguy

Sony can’t publish a game they never had any hand in making, therefore they make no decisions on what happens with said game.

          • GameDev345

Errr yes they can, its called First party/Third party relationship, Sony computer Entertainment and Microsoft studios are also publishers, Rime, Wild, Heavy Rain, all published by Sony but developed by others

    • GameDev345

Not even close, Warner Bros Japan owns the game, and are making the decision not to waste resources on a console that is doing terribly over there

      • demfax

Xbox selling so badly in Japan 3rd party publishers are pulling support already, just like they did with 360 3rd party games in Japan. Ouch.

      • MNFNGamer

And I guess ps4 is doing well? Not by a long shot mind as well make a 3DS version since no one there care for ps4 or xbox one, atleast it will make sells but this is ass backwards

        • GameDev345

Doing far better than the Xbox One as third party developers are willing to allow the PS4 have their game and with the slew of Japanese games coming on the PS4, it will likely pick up

Yeah I dont think this game will do great on the 3ds as it will be overshadowed by the heavy amount of Japanese titles on it, you do have to think once in a while you know. PS4 is more of a combination of western and japanese titles hence why it will be better on the platform

A lot of people care for the PS4 more than the Xbox One in Japan, and that is just straight fact

          • MNFNGamer

Still bad decision it’s a multiplat I would just do a digital only decision for xbox if they care about manufacture costs that way they can still make something from out of the xbox corner, as for ps4 after tgs it will pick up just by how much though, but that gundam and dragon quest

          • GameDev345

Not a bad decision, more of a calculative one knowing the sales of Batman on the Xbox One will be more than likely be terrible over there

Well there are still costs to pay for putting the game online and it will still come down to them making money for development costs then spending money providing a game on a console that is struggling knowing they wont get back much for it

Xbox fans in Japan can still import it when it launches, so I really don’t see the big deal here, Its just a company covering its risks.

Lets not forget Batman game won’t be a big deal in Japan anyway, but if you are going to spend money on providing for a console, why not provide it for the more likeable console before taking a money risk on the other one

  • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Hopefully we don’t see XB fans go nuts and start making threats and obscenities like PS fans did for Tomb Raider. All part of business…

    • Aquadysseus

Well this isn’t really the same kind of situation as that. The PS4 exclusivity for this is in Japan only, a country that isn’t really crazy about either console. Tomb Raider is a timed Xbox One exclusive world wide, it’s entirely different.

      • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Would you prefer if I said “XB fans in Japan” to be more specific for you? I thought that was implied…

        • Franggio Hogland

They don’t care either way…no one cares…we’re all dead.

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Exactly my point. Majority of these people complaining should realize it’s still a business and is just 1 game. Death threats should never be happening but these are immature idiots that don’t recognize actual priorities in life. Their lives revolve solely around which platform they play on…

        • Aquadysseus

There you go. Comparing two things that are entirely different, as my comment stated.

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

And you missed my point – “making threats and obscenities” – is NEVER condonable, I don’t care if it’s New Zealand only or US only, the level of stupidity on the internet these days is beyond rampant…

          • Aquadysseus

You’re the hero the internet deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Oh please, go quote Nolan like every other fanboy to someone else…

          • Aquadysseus

Oh so every other fanboy quotes Nolan? You are beyond ridiculous. lmao

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Almost every other review on every game and media site has used that quote since TDKR debuted. It’s getting old – all it shows is people are incapable of thinking for themselves. Groupthink is a sad state of affairs.

          • Aquadysseus

OK Jeremiah, my braincells are slowly dwindling as I prolong this meaningless conversation. I can’t say it was fun, so seeya! o/

          • rudero

And almost every fanboy throws around “well they did this and they did that”. It happens everywhere with every company and you kids always try to make it sound specific.
            EVERY thing has idiot fanboys.

          • /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

            Yeah, Captain Save-a-ho

        • GameDev345

Yeah but the XB fans in Japan can easily import the game when it comes out in other zones, no Sony fan can play TR, so no matter what way you spin it, the situation is not the same.

        • /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

Apparently there are no XB fans in Japan

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

Very likely there are minimal. We’ll find out just how few there are tomorrow when that report comes out…

          • /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

probably go over better than your childish attempt at baiting

          • http://www.thealephnullsaga.com/ Jeremiah Locanas

There you go trying to start an argument again. Go play Destiny, dude instead of crying…

          • /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

There’s no argument to start. You’re baiting, I’m calling you on it. End of discussion. You should find a different hobby, you’re not a very good troll

    • Dennis Djoenz

      Ignorant comment of the century.

      • Aquadysseus

You seen the guys other comments around the site? It’s pretty much all the same.

        • Dennis Djoenz

I remember the guy. He analyses a lot of aspects that doesnt even concern gaming itself and sometime he posts comment like this ;p

    • Spoonyrogdrumps

Tomb Raider was a multiplatform franchise that existed on PC and Playstation long before Xbox came to be. That was and is still a big deal to many people.
If anyone is a “fanboy” it’s you.

  • ℳℛ.ⓅⒾⓀⓀⓄⓃ

Well Ps4 rapes Xbox in Japan then

  • Fetch > Delsin

thats it. the competition is over in japan. xbox one was already dead in japan, but with all this bad newse the compition is over with ps4.

poor microsoft. they are now begging to the developers…..

  • Sunzy

This is obviously Sony saying that it needs to win in Japan as if it isn’t already, Microsoft are already emphasizing its third party line-up for the Japanese market. But to say the least Sony is answering towards those by grabbing the big guns as exclusive. Do Japanese people even care about racing games, batman or some random shooter for the start.. it doesn’t contain anything they are looking for lol

    • Millenia Blue

      They do care for Racing.

  • Carl

Dear Microsoft Xbox execs, even I realise the Xbox brand is dead in Japan, for many well-known reasons, and yet you failed to do anything to prevent the disaster. I wonder how much is your monthly paycheck, because you don’t seem to deserve it.

Xbox One’s failure in Japan is not about Japanese nationalism (meaning that japanese gamers support only japanese companies), but rather because Microsoft for the past 13 years market a brand/product aimed only at the american market, whereas competitors Sony and Nintendo target the whole world. Maybe you should star collaborating with more people outside USA.

    • Millenia Blue

      LOL! That’s your opinion! dude!

  • Alkaporty

Well, at least Microsoft is investing in ads over there.

  • SunnyRivers

How many people purchased an XboxOne for this game last week? How many would have purchased a PS4 instead? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • RealityCheck2013

    KEPOW!!! LoL:D

  • Fake_of_Silva

    Logic on the comments:

Franchise exclusive to xbox -> totally sucks, evil empire of madness
Franchise exclusive to ps4 -> totally awesome, kicks ass big time

    • DarkHiei1

      someones alittle salty… lolol

  • Belmont

PS4 and XB1, can’t we just be friends? I guess not.

  • DarkHiei1

it was prolly another troll atempt like the destiny fragrance

  • Stranger On The Road

I honestly doubt that Sony had anything to do with the exclusive decision; both were announced right after the release of the XB1 in Japan, this might be because the publishers weren’t happy with the initial sells number of the XB1 (still have no idea how it went).

I do believe that in Japan the purchase of physical copies is still the main way of selling, the cost of duplicating the discs for the XB1 vs how many they are expecting to sell, might be the real reason why it suddenly became exclusive.

The lack on announcement from Sony regarding the matter during their 1st of Sep event says a lot. For that matter, did they even announce that Batman: Arkham Knight is exclusive in Japan?
