Microsoft to Use the “Power of the Xbox One” to Evolve Xbox Avatars with Better Graphics and More

Xbox Avatars were introduced six years ago on Xbox 360, but with the introduction of the Xbox One Microsoft is looking into improve them, with better graphics and a wider ecosystem, as revealed by two career opportunity ads seeking software engineers (one and two).

Since their introduction six years ago, Xbox avatars have become the social identity for our gaming customers across Microsoft properties, making their way into Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox mobile apps, Windows, and into major and indie games. As we cross the threshold to a unified operating system and product experience across Microsoft, it is time to for Xbox avatars to also advance to the next level. Come with us, as we take Xbox avatars on their biggest adventure yet with higher fidelity and a bigger stage in new Xbox experiences. You will be part of the broader Xbox Experiences team, which owns the Xbox One Shell, and the Xbox experiences across console, desktop, slate, mobile, iOS, and Android. We are a team of innovative veterans that has played significant roles in launching Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Kinect. Come join us, and our wave of monthly releases, generating delight and praise from our customers.

At Xbox weโ€™re looking for a senior graphics engineer that will work with us to grow the avatar platform across all of our platforms, leveraging the power of Xbox One, the far reach of Windows, and the intimacy of touch on mobile devices. You will own the rendering tech for the Avatar engine, working to ensure Avatars are not only gorgeous, but highly performant across a wide scale of devices.

Candidate Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, modify and optimize graphic and related rendering systems for the Avatar ecosystem
  • Responsible for profiling as well as optimization of rendering, lighting, and shading components of the Avatar stack
  • Work with designers, animators, artists, and other content creators on the implementation of new features
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Maintain high quality coding and validation standards throughout the development cycle

Looks like Xbox Avatars are in for a visual overhaul not only on Xbox One, using the higher power of the platform compared to Xbox 360, but also on windows and mobile.

On top of graphics, we’re also looking at new features. While no details are given on what features Microsoft expects to implement, looks like Avatars will have a “bigger stage” in the future. They’re arguably already the best of their kind (but they don’t have much competition, as PlayStation Home is closing and Nintendo’s Mii are just… well… not very good looking)ย and it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll evolve.

Who cares? They are just Avatars.

    • ExplodingJuice

Alot of people care. It is an extension of their online presence. Don’t rain on other people’s parade because you don’t like it.

      • Seraphimbahamut

Why does it matter how much tech is put in it? They already are representations and they are fine as is is what I meant. Why not put the money into something more useful like security or tracking down lizard squad but what ever. ๐Ÿ˜›

        • bardock5151

Because they’ve got enough to do it all.

      • Doggystyle

Avatars = Kiddie console makeover. So much for having an adult gaming system. Its back to copying Nintendo, eh?

Those 360 avatars were so freaking GAY. How dare they force people to have those stupid looking things on their console interface. The people who wanted that crap already bought a Wii.

        • brusselsproty

Ignore this fanboy he is a regular Sony fanboy on that pathetic Cinemablend or whatever it’s called site.

He talks about weak consoles and forgets to mention the weakass PS4 and it’s CPU bottleneck problem.

          • Doggystyle

That was a waste of a comment. Wanna use a lifeline or phone a friend?

          • brusselsproty

If I asked to use a lifeline and phone a friend at the same time would that bog down the PS4s CPU to much ?.

          • Doggystyle

Unlike the Xbox One, the PS4 party chat works bruh. Just use that and STFU. You’re stupid.

          • brusselsproty

Party chat works fine, have they sorted out messages taking half an hour to arrive on PS4 yet ?.
Two dimple questions, can you point to one comment you have ever made where you actually say Anything Negative about the PS4 ?
What things don’t work well or are missing on the PS4 ?

        • ExplodingJuice

“Gay” to you. Fun to others. I respect your opinion. All I ask is that you please respect the opinions of others. It is just the human thing to do.

Also, being as it’s their system I believe they can add whatever they want to it whether people like it or not.

  • JP

That’s cool. I hope they bring in the scanning from kinect sports rivals and make it a lot better and allow you to use your avatar easily in games like the wii mii avatars.

    • ShoNuff

they should just let you use your characters from rivals as avatars. Maybe even offer rivals as a free game.

  • Fetch > Delsin

Wow, what a great feature, i might actually buy another xbox one for this. lol

      Mii Too Adventures ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • brusselsproty

They have done well for year one being second only to Nintendo on the games side, but then Nintendo have had an extra year to develop their games.

  • JerkDaNERD7

I really thought Avatars were stupid til’ I got one.

  • RaGing_Wild

Holy crap, the Xbox has power? Who woulda known.

  • superkarma

They sure do know how to write up a wanted ad, that’s for sure.

  • Alter

at least it’s totally better than Miis

  • desponent

But what about the cloud? someone think of the poor cloud ๐Ÿ™

  • Joe Michael Stonebraker

    Do I lose my outfits?

  • RandomDev

Better uses cool, better graphics meh.

  • You are flat out wrong

I’m surprised they dumped them for the Bone in the first place. They would a made a lot of coin on cosmetic DLC for those things.

  • Radeon Weabo

MS keeps on releasing a lot of PRs to convince the consumers to buy X1 or to believe that X1 is a lot more powerful than PS4. Y’know, c’mon seriously, I was not born yesterday to believe these crap MS. They’re trying to inject in the minds of people that with the updated SDK the X1 will produce more beautiful graphics than PS4, but of course it won’t be happen if the devs they paid with 6-7 digits of check will not downgrade the PS4’s version.

    • Lennox

And you believe Sony more? Neither one of these companies are telling the whole truth and they never will. Microsoft and Sony overexaggerate the power of their consoles. Neither console produces better graphics than the other. The PS4 just has an in res for some games. But I can see you’re a conspiracy theorists who thinks MS pays devs to downgrade PS4 games. So whatever.

  • ChaoticP

Wow the fanboys haven’t slowed down on this site, the ability to turn a simple wanted ad into something negative is quite an impressive skill. I’m interested in seeing the new Avatars I thought it was pretty cool to be able to use them in some games on 360 hopefully they’ll have games where they’re usable on the Xbox One as well.

I could care less about some stupid avatar.

Xbox One SmartGlass: update to fix crashing woes

    • brusselsproty

I missed Smart glass for the last two days good to see it’s back, all that WIFI DIRECT 256mbps smoothness between Xbox One and tablets etc is amazing.

I’m surprised Sony’s stuck to the last gen lagfest 8 mbps Bluetooth.

  • Daniel Lawson

If they could do this and allowed people to use them in indie games it could be huge for development for small teams.

  • Even though the avatars were a clear copy/paste of Nintendo’s Mii system, they actually improved on the formula quite a bit. I am still surprised Sony didn’t implement this into PS4. It adds customization, which PS4’s OS does indeed lack, and I miss it very much. I love seeing my virtual self on the OS screen with Wii.

  • wardy from narnia

the power of the xb1…..excuse me for one moment…..(hahahahahahaha) and now, wait what was i reading again?

  • Zanreo

I hope the avatars are so realistic you can see the dirt under their fingernails
