Sony Loses “The Last Guardian” Trademark in the US

In a bout of “not so excellent news,” it seems that Sony has abandoned their The Last Guardian trademark:

According to the USPTO, it was “abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.” The last “Extension of Time to File SOU” was filed by Sony on July 2, 2014, and it was the third of five such files.

Such news can mean one of three things: either the entire project was cancelled and Sony is now abandoning the trademark for it, or the project is still ongoing but Sony has simply chosen to change the name.

It’s also possible that the publisher simply forgot to file a new extension request. It most certainly wouldn’t be the first time it happens in this industry.

I suppose we’ll see which of the three theories are actually correct in time.

As I’ve been saying all along…TLG is vaporware. The sooner Sony admits to that and stops leading the fanbase on with empty promises, the better.

    Exactly right. I don’t care about this game and I never understood the unwarranted hype for a game that has only had a CGI trailer…in nearly 8 years.
    
    I just find it disappointing that Sony won’t admit that the game is done for. Even if by some miracle it does get released, it’ll be met with an insane amount of disappointment, as no game could live up to the amount of hype this vaporware has been given.

      You never played their previous games? I admit I played them very late (the remastered collection) but those are classics and thats why a lot of fans are eagered. Who are you (who dont play games like these anyway) to stump on those that have high hopes for their new project? Hype you know what Hype was games like from ubisoft and yo still bought them all and even enjoying it. Watchdogs and Destiny thats hype for ya.

        I’m not trying to stump on peoples hopes. I’m just trying to get people to stop holding unrealistically high expectations, especially for a game we’ve never even seen. I say the same towards any game that gets a crazy amount of hype. More likely than not, those people are only setting themselves up for disappointment.
        
        I’m sorry, but Watch Dogs and Destiny hype don’t even come close to TLG hype. No game’s hype could come close to TLG hype.

        Yup, paid $60 for a fun online experience that I continue to enjoy with my friends to this day. Money well spent.

        The single player campaign had an amazingly delivered story, but the MP to this day is one of the best tactical shooters u can get. What’s great is they compliment each other, the story adding atmosphere and history behind each map and why there are hunters vs fireflys.

        The MP in TLOU is downright amazing. Best MP to grace any console. Tactically its miles apart from the run n gun rubbish we see normally. I bought tlou solely for the single player campaign ans was completely blown away once I tried the MP. Extended the games longevity by at least a year or more.

I think it might be a name change after all Shadow of The Colossus was called Wanda and The Colossus before Sony changed it.

The Last Guardian may be going though a name change so they can finally re announce the game for PS4 with a new name.

I think the most likely is that Sony cancelled the entire project. It is better to keep all the trademark (secondary or alternative names) to prevent others to relate to your own project.

If The Last Guardian is going to change name (in the case the trademark was really abandoned), then it means the game has been remodeled significantly, to the point of no recognition relative to the original.

In any case, I really hope TLG has not ben cancelled altogether.

  What are you talking about lol in no way did the title show any indication on what the gameplay would be like only the story.We can guess what the gameplay is like based on previous output of the studio. Now are you saying they might have abandoned the whole bond between this guardian and the boy which is what their whole aim was? Then that would definitely defeat the whole trailer and project, but I think it would rather be abandoned than what you are assuming lol.

    The gameplay mechanics can change, with the boy-Trico bond still around, I mean anything can be done theoretically. Art can be altered, too (style, effects, lighting, etc.). I guess we will find out someday what’s going on.

According to Marty Silver at IGN when he went to play the early build of Bloodborne at Sony Japan it’s now being referred to as Trico by them, so it’s probably had it’s name changed to that or maybe that’s a codename and it’s called something else.

I’m going with a name change for a few reasons

1 – The Last Guardian as a name is now probably bad press and too much hype to live up to.

2 – The game has probably been changed so much since it’s inception that they felt a name change better reflected the game they now have

3 – Yoshida has already confirmed the game is in full production.

I think, if its a true is a great tactical choice by sony to drop the title and reduce consumer expectations on the game itself, that way if or when the game does see the light of day, people will not have such a preset expectation on the actual title and instead be pleasantly surprised.
