Next Big Xbox One Update Coming in February as Microsoft Wants Stability for the Holidays

Microsoft finally implemented the New Xbox One Experience, and Director of Program Management Mike Ybarra gave an estimate on when the next big update will come in the latest episode of Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s podcast.

Ybarra revealed that the team is already looking at what the next monthly update after the Holiday season will look like. They had the meeting on its feature set on the same day as the New Xbox One Experience released, and they want to make it public as soon as possible to get a lot of feedback.

That said, there isn’t going to be a big system update in December and in January. The next big one is coming in February. The reason for that is that Microsoft wants stability during the Holidays, with lots of people buying new consoles and games. According to Ybarra, it’s not the best time for consumers and for the team to have new features

Interestingly, we also heard on how backward compatibility was made possible by the team at Xbox.

“Two and a half years ago, our engineering team didn’t think it was possible. We took a set of engineers throughout a lot of experiences at Microsoft, and we asked them… Phil did a great job. He knows that the engineering team likes to be challenged. They like to try to do the impossible.

Phil challenged them, said “spend some time on this and let me know if it really is impossible, or if we can find some solutions somewhere.” About six months into the investigation, a couple of engineers had a breakthrough, and that allowed them to sort of see the light at the end of the tunne and say, “wow, we’re gonna get some momentum now,” and accellerated progress started happening.

A lot of those ideas are patented right now, so we don’t like to go into all the details, because it is very confidential engineering, but it really was that moment, and some people can remember the day in which we got a couple of things working, and some of the games up and runnning. We were like “maybe we can do that.”

Two years later, I think the team is really proud of what they’re doing, and now it’s just a matter of people voting and making sure that publishers know that they want certain games in the program.”

Hyrb mentioned that even if a game is the top of the requests, it doesn’t mean it can be implemented instantly, as there’s “a lot of paperwork and conversations that have to happen.”

Ybarra continued by explaining that there are cases in which a publisher doesn’t have the rights to the music anymore, or for some of the assets in the game. That makes things more complex and that’s why those titles won’t be available shortly after the release of the feature.

He also mentioned that the team is working as hard as they can, doing negotiations with the publishers, so that the feature is updated very regularly with new games.

Makes sense. Either way they’re doing a great job!

  • R.K

Thats cool they literally just gave us a new UI, the evolution of the One is amazing. I hope for Microsoft to continue pushing the console and also hopefully bringing back that 4 Family Share option back in the Always Online days

    • CRZYSPZ

The only problem I had with the original Xbox One plan was the 48 (or was it 24?) hour check up. Other than that, everything was perfect IMO.

      • R.K

Its 36 hours without online and if you have a constant connection it was 24. Thats not an issue for me, but that easily out weighs its benefits

        • CRZYSPZ

It wasn’t a big deal to me either, but I feel like it was very “anti-consumer” when it came to other countries that are less fortunate when it comes to online availability.
That was seriously my only problem with the original design though. Would’ve loved game sharing with a set list of friends, automatically making physical copies of my games turn into digital copies, and getting crazy Xbox store sales similar to Steam… but most of that is just something that got killed off.

          • ByAnyMeansLegendary

But it was only a ping check in sort of thing, it simply would just check to see if you were pirating games that didn’t belong to you. Now idk about PS4, but the Xbox One games has 2 licenses on disc, it was supposed to be that all we would have to do was put the disc in, install, and have the digtal copy for us if we wanted as well as physical. They had to implement some type of DRM to control that and family sharing. We don’t have either of those now, but I think it’s going to come back sometime.

          • CRZYSPZ

I didn’t have a problem with what it was checking for, the only problem I had with it is that you couldn’t play games if your Xbox One was connected to Live after so many hours. I just found it wrong that they’d be taking away a persons ability to do what they bought the console for just because of the inability to connect online.
Just my personal preference though. It wouldn’t have affected me, but I definitely felt bad for those that Don Mattrick said could buy a 360 instead.

      • Triton

That was the smallest problem imo.
PSN starts counting down to the deletion of you cloudsaves and DLC after 32 hours I think.
They auto delete everything after a while, cant remember if it was 6 months or a year, so if I dont go online for a while all the stuff I bought and saved games are gone.
I suppose XBL was (originally) getting something similar.

    • Terminator

      “Family Share option”
      You asked, they have delivered.

      • R.K

No I know about this, its just between one other person. The original idea was to have one account in which you can add 3 other share accounts who can access your entire library whenever they want. And this was not limited to digital only titles, I could do that with retail disks as well

      • ByAnyMeansLegendary

It’s nice but it’s an unnofical workaround version to what they original had planned before having to rework the system before launch. I won’t bother going through that trouble. I WANT THAT OFFICIAL FAMILY SHARING TO COME! Lol

  • http://www.techreviewshop.com/ JP

They need to kick off the new year with background audio, it’s the only major thing left to add and the biggest feature they can add to change gaming experiences.

    • CRZYSPZ

That’ll probably come in the February update, they are definitely working on it though!:)

      • jwp316c

wishing it is not fact there doing it

        • CRZYSPZ

Phil Spencer has confirmed multiple times that they plan on releasing it at some point after the new UI. They just wanted to focus on the UI for now.

          • Samuel Sanchez

They also have planned PC to Xbox streaming and DVR capability. Add background music to that list for February and then Xbox is on a major roll.

It’s gonna complete this console as the best console I’ve ever touched. Yes, background audio, I know games and features play a big part but this feature will finally put it over the top. On 360 I couldn’t stop using this feature. And if somehow they could implement it in a way that while playing in game that it automatically stops the in game music or something like that. GOLDDD

  • Starman

They can start by putting back all the things they removed with this new update. Showcase, friends Gamerscore leaderboard, view achievement art full screen, notifications for comments, the previous achievement app, most played info, etc.

    • CRZYSPZ

Uh… I’ve received notifications for comments, likes, and shares on my videos throughout the preview experience for the new UI. Same with viewing achievements in full screen.

      • Starman

That’s strange then as I’m seeing no notifications for comments, likes etc. Checked with a friend and neither does he and he hasn’t for several weeks (he’s has the preview dash).

I can’t see any option to view achievement art full screen, only to set it as background.

        • CRZYSPZ

That’s definitely weird. I’ve even received notifications for my friends commenting back on their own posts that I’ve commented on. I’m pretty sure for achievements all I do is go through the snapped app, open the achievement, then go to full screen (if I remember correctly, I for sure did this with Halo 5 because I wanted to check and see what the Lone Wolf chievo looked like before I put it as my background image).

Have you hard reset your Xbox One yet? Sometimes that can get the update to fully kick in/speed up your Xbox if it’s being laggy because of new updates.

          • Starman

            Thanks, I’ll try that.

    • efnet

Lol do you even have an xbox ?

      • Starman

Obviously, or I wouldn’t have noticed all the things they’ve removed!

        • efnet

Like the man said above , everything you named is still there that’s why I questioned you about even having one lol…..

          • Starman

Well it looks like things are borked on my xbox then, at least they are supposed to be working. Could be to do with me installing when live was having issues.

          • efnet

Lol stoppppp !!!!!! Just stop bro

          • Starman

Damn look at my post history! These are legit problems I’m having! I’m not some Ps fanboy in disguise!

          • efnet

I never said you were but most if not all of the features on the x1 are server based so to say you don’t see what we see it’s kinda strange

          • hēT͟Hən

            this conversation amuses me…..

          • efnet

Im sure it do I mean you’re always watching ….

          • hēT͟Hən

            you’re “sure it do”?

Naw, seriously I’ve had exchanges with @Starman before. He’s a hardcore xbot yet instead of helping one of your own that is having problems, you try to discredit and dismiss his problems and all but accuse him of making it up. That’s so ironic

    • Lennox

Showcase is still there. Notifications for comments is still there. Most played is in ‘My Games and Apps.’ Do you even have an X1?

      • Starman

Showcase only shows the first post, how do you view them all? And I’m not getting notifications for anyone liking or commenting on my activity feed. Where do I get them because they’re not in notifications?

        • Lennox

Showcase shows a slideshow of the last five posts for me, and anyone elses profile. You probably have to go into your settings to enable your notifications.

          • Starman

I have all notifications on, but I’ll bear with it for now. Showcase still just show the first item though. Pressed literally every button to try switching to the next item without success.

          • Lennox

Maybe try a hard reboot. Or turning notifications off, then back on.

  • Michael Wilson

What are they talking about???? Publishers not having rights to music???? What???? It is a 360 game, it is on disc, you are using a virtual 360, stop listening to money hungry lawyers and just do it, dayum!¡!

    • doplerradar

The music industry is very protective of its copy rights. They prefer to play it than deal with all the legal issues.

    • superkarma

Stop listening to lawyers? Oh, what a world that would be.

      • doplerradar

Apparently in 2015 in Back to the Future 2, they outlawed lawyers.

    • hēT͟Hən

They still would need the permission of the individual publishers and developers to bring the games over to the new platform. In most cases I can’t see why they wouldn’t want that since it would potentially lead to more sale of the games, but in some cases like where they are getting ready to do a remaster or something like that I could see it being contentious. Its pretty much why many PSP games never made it to the Vita

      • Michael Wilson

That sounds kinda stupid, I do not need permission to play a CD or DVD or blueray or game disc on a brand new device providing that I purchase it. That crap falls on the consumer, not the device manufacturer. They need to shut that twisted greed logik down immediately.

        • hēT͟Hən

          It is what it is.

          • hēT͟Hən

The only thing you bought when you bought that game is the permission to play it on a certain platform, nothing else.

  • Triton

Glad to read they patented the solutions, this means other platforms have no way to do BC the same way.

    • sgt_hammertime

I didn’t know they patented that tech because I’m quite intrigued at how it’s done.

  • Tyralun

    More backwards compatible titles!

  • Rafoca

December won’t feature any updates at all or won’t feature a BIG update???

  • Mr Xrat

Talking about the next update already? So much for that killer holiday lineup.

    • http://www.recordingarts.co.uk/ Adrian Grey

Update: The Killer Holiday lineup of games sold over 1million each.

      • Mr Xrat

Which is absolutely terrible for Tomb Raider and Halo after all that hype in the biggest buying period of the year.

Go back to Gamespot so you can alleviate your buyer’s remorse in articles about another pointless Xbone update.
