Xbox One Exclusive Phantom Dust Resurfaces in New Microsoft Trademark

According to a registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, on January 13th Microsoft filed for a trademark for “Phantom Dust.”

The mark is filed under Class 9, identifying game software, as well as Class 41, online game software.

Phantom Dust Trademark

It’s worth mentioning that class 41 doesn’t necessarily mean that, if we’re talking about the new game, it will be online. The class is required for any kind of online feature, including smaller ones like leaderboards and similar. Also worth mentioning, Microsoft already has a live trademark for “Phantom Dust” from 2003 also in one of the same categories (Class 9).

The Phantom Dust reboot, which was announced at E3 2014, has been in limbo since the then-developers Dark Side Games shut their doors. However, Microsoft has insisted on multiple occasions that the game is still coming.

Recently, Microsoft has also trademarked “Fragments” and “Roboraid.”

    Please be at E3.

    • Ritsuko Blue

should it be out before E3?

  • Ritsuko Blue

Yay! Thanks Phil! 🙂 Now. I wonder who the developer behind this Phantom Dust. Platinum? or FromSoftware perhaps?

    • YuriFan

They might just do a collaboration like Sega with Halo Wars 2.
Even better if they get the original creator Yukio Futatsugi, but I heard they didn’t contact him when the trailer was shown.

      • Kaetsu

If they partner with SEGA, they could get Atlus on board which would be rad. Imagine this game with SMT artists doing character designs. I’d rush out and by an Xbox One right away!

      • Nullman

You heard wrong then. He tweeted about it before and after E3 2014.

        • YuriFan

Oh. If Yukio is on board then so am I.
This guy is a mad genius.

Good to hear any news on it.

I hope it’s made by Japanese developers this time like the original. Good Japanese devs, at that.

Would have also loved an Otogi reboot or sequel.

    • riobravo79

Good Lord, Otogi would be stunning on current platforms. Actually dug out Otogi 2 last month and it’s still breathtaking.

    this MS’s Last Guardian?

    • doplerradar

Maybe more like Deep Down than Last Guardian.

      • R.K

Maybe more like none of those games, Phantom Dust is unique and that is what made it a staple on the OG Xbox

Excuse me I need to rub this in the face of someone who said it was cancelled.

  • Shuura

Finally!! A reason for me to consider getting an XB1.

  • Agent HUNK

Awesome news! xbox needs this asap !! everything they announced two years ago at E3 still has no release dates .. so far only quantum break has a date and I am hoping it releases still cause i am excited for it. I also really want more news on Gears 4 and crack down

    • Fullgore

If it did get a new developer behind it, it would most likely not release this year. Most games take 2 or more years to make. Even the CoD games usually have multiple teams studios working on two different CoD games at the same time.
Still, I remember a fan tweeting to Adam Isgreene that Ark Sys works wanted to make a new fighting game and Adam used to refer to PD as a Fighting game because of its mechanics and forwarded the news to Phil Spencer. I hope this means they do a Phantom Dust with the style of Guilty Gear.

      • KnifeAndFork

Just get Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Eyes of Heaven when,it comes out later this year and pretend that’s a PD game lol cause there’s no way this games coming out, or that even if it will be, that it’ll be any good.
They don’t even wanna use the original Japanese creator and team that made the game, despite him saying he’d love to do it. That should tell you something….

  • Elkethus Degrace Lauzon

Hell yes this is very good news ^.^

  • Agent HUNK

still dreaming of that battletoads remake or reboot xbox exclusive that was rumored … weird too cause they added battletoads to killer instinct and the collection of old games by Rare replay. It would be amazing to have a remake of it and online coop.

    • doplerradar

It wouldn’t surprise me if they eventually do Battletoads. Battletoads was also in Shovel Knight.

    • Eric Woodley

There is always a possibility of hearing about battletoads at E3. I do remember hearing they wanted to bring them back, but no definitive time frame. I seem to recall that Rash was wildly popular during his preview in Killer Instinct. Plus Phil’s a fan

More games is only a good thing.

  • MrTouchyMan

    Now.. show gameplay..

  • Mr Xrat

Pickings are slim if a renewed trademark is something to get excited about.

  • KnifeAndFork

    >people still getting excited about Microsoft lying about Phantom Dust

    • Rockz

Exactly how does filing a trademark = “lying”?

    • Terminator

      >idiots like KnifeAndFork still talking out of their a$$

  • Marco

this is one of their mega titles that unfortunately came out at the end of the life cycle of the original xbox, it’s one of their most original games and probably the best game they didn’t know they had as ammunitiion, if done right and treated like AAA game its impossible for it to fail.

  • Mr Xrat

Pickings must be slim if a renewed trademark for a scrapped game perks up Xgimp peckers this much.

    • Terminator

LOL coming from the same guy hyping The Last Guardian…oh wait but if isn’t Revovler Ocelot with his upvote bots.
