PS4 Won’t Disappoint in 2016, PS Vita Important for Young Targets According to PlayStation Japan CEO

PS4 and PS Vita had a successful holiday season in Japan, selling quite a lot more than in the same period of 2015, yet Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Atsushi Morita feels that 2016 is the year to watch, as he explained during an interview on Famitsu.

First of all, he talked about PS Vita, mentioning that the console was born from the idea of offering a home console experience in a portable console, and that philosophy has not changed, and he would like to continue with it.

In particular, he’d also like to keep promoting the console to children, as he feels that children are very sensitive to early gaming experiences, that leave a strong impression. He also wants to encourage communication between parents and childen, and for that the PS Vita is “very important.”

In that field Minecraft continues to have strong sales, and grew massively in 2015, but Morita-san also expects Dragon Quest Builders to have a wide adoption among children. He also feels that while many children play Minecraft nowadays, there are many that still don’t know about it (in Japan), and there he sees a further opportunity for expansion.

Moving on to PS4, he Morita-san mentioned that the plans for 2016 have two main factors. One is to steadily continue to work towards medium terms plan, to settle the PlayStation brand as everyone’s entertainment hub.

Secondly, in 2016 there are really a lot of games that will be released, and 2015 laid the foundations for a further expansion of the market. In 2016, Sony needs to pick up from there and push hard. It might not be always easy, but it’s something that must be absolutely pursued. According to Morita-san 2016 is a very important year, and he’ll do whatever he can to achieve success. Since he’s going to give his all, he hopes customers will look forward to it.

Also, he’d like to push (Japanese) developers to create games that weren’t considered possible, and to compete on worldwide market, and on the other hand, to continue develpoing uniquely Japanese experiences, and Sony is going to give them its full support.

Lastly, Morita-san explained that there are so many things he should do and wants to do, that at times even his own staff is concerned. Ultimately, he’s confident that fans won’t be disappointed.

Well looking at the insane amount of jrpgs coming in 2016 for ps4, I expect that this year is gonna be quite a success for Sony.

    • iamakii

Count me in. I will get every single JRPG on PS Vita/PS4.

      • 49ers fan

and you can say goodbye to your social life.. jprg is bare minimum 60 hours up to 300 for each game to playthrough.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Why do they have to say goodbye to their social life? Lol. I doubt they are going to play them for hours and hours on out for days. Maybe the minority in that group perhaps.

        • Larry Rose

Most gamer’s haven’t got one in the first place.

      • gRammarnazi

        Good for you

    • Eric Davenport

      Persona 5!!! Woot woot!

      • Davis Arend

Final Fantasy XV woot woot…? Is that how you do it? XD

  • Cloudman

Vita is already a disappointment. “PS Vita Important for Young Targets According to PlayStation Japan CEO” Pretty much a flat out lie for him to say considering Sony does not support the thing.

    • Depends on your view of “disappointment”. In the Western Market…well..it has had trouble catching on due to several factors which I am not going to go into detail here. However in Japan, where more and more people are turning to mobile gaming (when I say mobile I don’t mean just cellphone gaming), the PSVITA is doing just fine and will continue to do so as long as that trend remains true.

    • Castor Troy

      Is that you Startheory? 😀

      • zero

Jrpgman, most likely, or Rpgman was his name? Can’t quite remember… Something happen to Startheory, don’t tell me he was banned?

        • StarTheory

          Uhh no, I’m still here.

They want me gone but I’ll be here forever 🙂

          • Somerandomperson

            welcome back

          • zero

Good to know you’re still here, had a bit of a scare there! 😀

( This message is 100% sarcasm-free by the way )

          • StarTheory

            Aww thanks

          • Eric Davenport

Don’t worry Daniel Gonzalez will tell ya if its sarcasm or not. He gets a hard on from it.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

If you’re fantasizing about me getting a hard on over comments, then you may want to see a shrink. Just some helpful advice. ;P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

As long as the mods don’t care about what goes on, then that’s probably a sure bet. Lol. Even if we don’t agree on much, I don’t think you do anything that is really worthy of a ban anyway. Everyday is always a new fresh start as far as I’m concerned. 🙂

      • PuppetMaster

It’s Ness alternate account and he’s a fanatic nintendo fanboy.

        • Sunny11

          You mean JRPGman

      • Sunny11

        Its JRPGman

    • Egla

They support the Vita in Japan where people are actually buying them.

      • Cloudman

Sony does not support Vita in Japan whatsoever.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Sales in that region say otherwise. You would be correct if you said NA and Europe.

          • JonathanisPrimus

Other than Minecraft, Sony hasn’t released a single Vita game physically in Japan since 2014. That was the last time Sony released a Japanese Vita game.

          • Cloudman

Third or fourth place in the region every week now, most it peaked was first place once or twice in 4 years, no exclusive game support whatsoever, Software sales are usually terrible.

    • MegaRay

I agree with you. When was the last first party game Sony released for Vita, in Japan or west? Two years ago?

      • Cloudman

        Probably 2.

    • 49ers fan

everyone knows that the 3ds is the thing to own for younger ones and not the psvita… the peak psvita had was because of the 20 something down there plays jrpg, and there have been a lot of third party jrpg released for the psvita… but as usually sony is very good to acknowledging the Vita but doing nothing when others do the work to keep it alive.

      • Cloudman

Actually there have been more exclusive jrpgs on 3DS than there ever have been for Vita. That is partly why 3DS is so successful.

3DS is the jrpg machine, not Vita

    • PR Gamer

In Japan it isn’t a disappointment. If it were it wouldn’t be in the top 3 hardware selling every week. You’re looking at it as he were talking worldwide, the Japan CEO. And how is that a lie?, the machine target young people, i dont see anything wrong with that quote, them not supporting it enough thats a different case. I said enough because 1st party games isn’t the only way to show support. There was recently an article here about sony stepping it to help put Banner Saga on Vita, last TGS they showed new colors and bundles, new apps, if thats not support then idk what it is, again 1st party games isn’t the only way to show support, yes is big but still support is there.

      • Cloudman

COmpared to the PSP? It is a failure.

“If it were it wouldn’t be in the top 3 hardware selling every week.”

Barely hanging on to third place, sales that are so low, Sony will not even say them.

“1st party games isn’t the only way to show support,”

Only if you want to sell the system yes. it is the only way.

        • PR Gamer

Alot of factor go into comparing it to the psp, something that was released 12 years ago. It isn’t a disappointment and not even close a failure. The xbox one now that is a failure, not even close to the vita. Barely hanging? just check the numbers, the last four weeks top 3 comfortable. over 200k sold in the last 4 weeks. If it were a failure it wouldn’t be in the market anymore, if it were, studios like Square Enix wouldn’t been developing games for it.

          • Cloudman

“It isn’t a disappointment and not even close a failure.” No exclusive games, sales that are even lower globally than Wii U? That is a failure.

“The xbox one now that is a failure, not even close to the vita.” Nobody expected anything from that system in Japan. People expected something from Vita.

“just check the numbers, the last four weeks top 3 comfortable easily. over 200k+ sold in the last 4 weeks alone” That is trash. Top 3 means nothing, when that is the only option.

“if it were, studios like Square Enix wouldn’t been developing games for it.”

They do not do anything exclusive for it. It is an afterthought.

PS4, gets exclusive Square games, So does 3DS.

  • Marius Henriksen

Always nice to see them acknowledging the Vita. I’m glad it’s doing well. Would love to see more first party studios give it some attention.

    • Josué B. Hernández

Sadly SONY put its first party studios on ps4 and Morpheus…

  • iamakii

So can we expect a PS Vita refresh?

  • Captain Clutch

I know the PS4 won’t disappoint me this year. As long as there are no delays

    • Daniel Gonzalez

There’s likely to be some delays. Nothing can be done about that.

    • RaGing_Wild

I mean, would you rather have rushed games or quality games.

      • Captain Clutch

Well Persona V was supposed to release years ago.

  • Rob

I expect the PS4 to be a success this year.

I also expect the new “20 year old’s” this year to buy the Vita. lol

  • PixelEdged

PS4 Won’t Disappoint in 2016 but Sony surely will, its only January and they tried to trademark “Let’s Play” I only wonder what other kinds of crap they try to pull next.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

It was a silly move on their part for sure but I doubt many gamers will care enough to consider it much of a disappointment. It’ll all come down to the games.

    • Tmfwang
    • Thatguy

Did you even read the article as to why it was denied ? What ever they attempted was obviously for the gamers.
      You sound like an idiot.

    • Eric Davenport

And didn’t it get refuted because somebody already own the copyright? It’s not like if the own the copyright to ‘Lets Play’ that no one can make lets play videos anymore. I do agree it was a douche move though.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

The MacArthur Law firm owns the trademark.

  • 49ers fan

sony already disappoint in 2016 because their psn sucks. how about sony improving it as they said they would do 3 years ago. i still cant see my ps4,psvita friends online on my ps3… sony you damn greedy arrogant lying hypocrites!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

PSN isn’t even nowhere it was 3 years ago. Lol. Lay off the exaggerations.

    • Eric Davenport

People still only play a ps3?

      • Raptor150

Just like Cloudman(JRPGMan), he’s just a jack-ass. Just ignore him.

        • Eric Davenport

          Alright. Thanks for the warning!

  • Andy

The Ps4 will dominate all Months of 2016

  • JayTee

PS4 lineup this year looks insane. I’m still trying to get my backlog down as it is so 2016 isn’t going to help!

A good problem to have though 🙂

    • StarTheory

This year is going to be AMAZING. The games I’m definitely picking up is Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank, Hitman, No Man’s Sky, Rime, Wild and hopefully Horizon and Dreams also release this year.

      • JayTee

I agree and I’m with you on all of those games, plus probably quite a few more! 😉

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Those are also on my radar. Though, Wild and Rime are still question marks this year.

        • JayTee

Yeah I’ll be surprised if we get Wild this year tbh…

  • Well they need a some things changed if they want to market the vita for younger crowds. Lower the price of memory cards, interchangeable game cards with out storing game save data on it and a PS Plus family plan that allows you to assign sub accounts to get access so dont have to buy multiple PS Plus subscriptions.

  • Eric Davenport

The biggest downfall of the Vita is those overpriced memory cards.

    • Functional Member

I got a 64GB one from nippon-yasan.com, for less than what a 32 would have cost me locally. That includes shipping.

  • Thatguy

When you’re in the driver’s seat, yet refuse to let up on the gas…..That’s how winning is done. Keep it Sony.

  • skratchy

    Wait a minute…I wasn’t expecting to be disappointed…

  • Gamist
  • I couldn’t be more excited about all the Based games. I only hope my Based stool softener kicks in soon so I’m not constipated when these release!

  • gRammarnazi

    Uncharted hype!!!

  • djnealb

I only just recently bought a Vita (imported the orange one from Japan) and I can’t believe that I waited this long to get it. First game I started playing was Persona 4 Golden, and I can’t get enough of it.

    • iamakii

My first game too and my reason for getting Vita.

  • Leia Hart

But how many of these awesome games will come West? I’m really nervous about getting shafted DQ11, Valkyria Azure, and Tokyo Xanadu in particular…

  • JonathanisPrimus

If you want Vita to appeal to kids, how about new Ape Escape, Yo-Kai Watch, Monster Hunter, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Cardfight Vanguard, etc. games? Right, Sony would only pay for those to be on PS4.

  • Larry Rose

2016 will be another rough year for the xbone.
