Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness’ Western Release Announced for PS4 and PS Vita; Skipping Xbox One

NIS America announced today with a press release that the visual novel by Mages. and 5pb. Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness will be released in Europe and in North America this fall on PS4 and PS Vita.

The game, tied-in with the popular anime series and movie, was initially released in Japan in 2015 exclusively for Xbox One, and then announced for a local Spring 2016 release for PS4 and PS Vita. In the west it will be skipping the Xbox One version, and come only for the two PlayStation platforms.

For those who love their physical disks, NIS America also shared that it will be available in both phsyical and digital releases. Interestingly, voice acting will be exclusively in Japanese, with localized text.

Incidentally, the trailer that we’ve been provided includes a Steam logo, but the press release makes no mention of it, listing only PS4 and PS Vita. We have reached out to the publisher to ask for a clarification on this, and we’ll update this post if we receive any relevant info.

Below you can check out a few screenshots, and the announcement trailer for the Western market.

…. perhaps I should watched the anime so that I can play this VN.

Will this be the first VN licensed by NISA? I can’t seem to remember any VN that they might have released!

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Actually I don’t remember others either.

    • Senpai Gundam

Even if it weren’t necessary, I’d still highly recommend watching the anime.

    • Joey

NISA have released the two Danganronpa games, so it’s not the first.

  • Arty McBert

That’s total BS. They originally said we were getting a Western release too.

    • KnifeAndFork

You bought the wrong console chief

  • phar0ahad3

AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Damn ive never seen this before an exclusives sequel becoming an exclusive to the other platform Ahahahahahahahahaha

      • kudostoyou

      Two words: Bayonetta Two

      • phar0ahad3

i meant a single console exclusive…bayonetta was a loose game so it couldve landed anywhere….

  • Bmax

Easy platinum, here I come! Still have to finish the anime, which is amazing.

Everything but Xbox One. Fails to mention Nintendo platforms…

    • Joey

This game wasn’t even made for any Nintendo platforms to begin with.

    • Pointy Hat Boy

Do Nintendo still make consoles? Who knew.

      • Joey

Erm they do. They aren’t in touch with much of the market, but they are still geting along financially and will do for quite some time.

    • It meant the platforms it was already on. The game was originally made for Xbox One, so it’s noteworthy that the localization won’t include that version.

  • Joey

    It’s a VN. I’m totally getting this :3

  • Thatguy

    Very, very solid anime.

  • AmyStarling

Thats pretty messed up not bringing over the xbone version,is there they just have to translate it along with everything else.Japanese games can’t sell that badly in the west for xbox can they?

    • Joey

The Xbone version sold poorly in Japan (hence the loss in exclusivity), I doubt it gave Mages/NIS the condfidence that it will do well in the West.

      • KnifeAndFork

        Why did they bother?

Any one of us could of predicted that lol

    • static5225

There aren’t many Japanese games on the XB1 to begin with and the ones that do come on the console don’t sell well. And low demand isn’t the only problem. MS has a very high minimum print order requirement. Kagari mentioned about it last May in regards to FF Type-0. The XB1 version sold below the minimum print order in the US, which did not make Square Enix very happy:

The same policy was also allegedly the cause of Shovel Knight not having a physical release on the XB1 despite the PS4, Wii U, and 3DS versions being available digitally and physically:

    • TheOneandOnlyGamer

No, it is not messed up in theory. The majority of current Xbox gamers are not sellable fans of Japanese niche products, unlike Sony gamers.

      • Lennox

But even Japanese niche products don’t sell well on the PS. Just better than Xbox.

        • It’s not about the sheer sales, it’s money back over money spent. If only 10,000 people buy a $30 niche game, it would be considered a success if they only spent $50,000 or so on it. The difference between 10,000 sales (from a device that is known for niche Japanese releases) and 5,000 sales (from a device that is less likely to be owned by fans of niche Japanese releases) could make or break revenue. Of course, the numbers are just in theory and totally disproportionate to real world examples.

Most Xbox gamers don’t care about Japanese games or they would have got a ps4 to begin with. They like shooters more.

      • Malacath

Yep I have to agree there. Japanese games are boring. I own a ps4 as well as an Xbox one and the only exclusives I like on ps4 are the western ones made by the likes of naughty dog or sucker punch. Bloodborne which I believe is Japanese bores the hell out me.

    • AmyStarling

Would like to add that I already preordered the ps4 version 🙂

I’m assuming that it’s also coming to PC since there’s the Steam logo at the end?

    • Giuseppe Nelva

  • Furkan Karaosmanoglu

Hahahah poor Xbone… Selling this less makes DEV’s choosing PS4.. 😛

  • TheOneandOnlyGamer

Thank God for NIS America. When this game was first announced, I thought it would have remained dead on the Xbox One. Happy to see the PS4 and Vita version are making the way over.

  • Only Based consoles get Based games.
The fact that there are even other consoles or that anyone would consider developing for them is just ludicrous.

  • Jamal

    glad I own a PS4 as well.

  • Char

Oh great its coming out on steam.
