PlayStation VR Sells Out Almost Instantly on European Amazon Stores (UPDATED)

Today PlayStation VR was made available for pre-order on European Amazon stores including Uk, Germany and France, but it wasn’t up there for long.

The headset remained available only a couple of minutes, before going sold out, with no mention on when it’ll be available again. Only Italy is lagging a bit behind, and there the headset is still available at the moment of this writing, even if we don’t know for how long.

It surely seems to be a strong start for Sony’s virtual reality headset, probably propelled by the PS4’s installed base, and by the price, which is the lowest among the major virtual reality headsets.

Update: Amazon UK just put up a second batch, so if you live in the land of Her Majesty and you’re still looking for a unit, here’s your chance. Unfortunately, based on the initial allocation of units, those who pre-order this new batch don’t have guaranteed day-one delivery. It remains sold out on the French and German stores.

“Due to limited stock we are only able to offer one unit per customer per address. We do not currently have a release date for this product. Based on our initial allocation we cannot guarantee release day delivery if you ordered after 11:45 GMT, Wednesday 16 March, 2016. You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time. This product comes with a UK plug and therefore may not be suitable for use outside of the UK.”

Update 2: now the headset is sold out in Italy as well.

Depends on number of units that will be available, but a good sign.

This generation is interesting, we’ll see battle not only for consoles but for VR products too.

If it sells even more PS4’s to then COOL 😛

    • garf02

the chances of anyone buying a PS4 just to get morpheus is slim, more likely already owners are the ones buying

      • uptownsoul

If a person is going to buy a console soon & slightly interested in VR…PS4…Game, Set, Match

      • WingsOfChicken

        PSVR, not Morpheus.

      • J.j. Barrington

        Um… stop.

There will be plenty of people who pick up a PS4 to use PSVR.

        • garf02

          400$ PS4
          400$ PSVR
          50$ Camera
          50$ PSMOVE
right.. people will spend near 1K for this to play a racing sim, and CoD till their necks tire out, so they remove it and play normally

          • J.j. Barrington

            PS4 isn’t $400.
            Camera isn’t $50.
            Move isn’t even NEEDED.

And the people looking to get it won’t be looking to only play a racing sim, or Call of Duty.

You suck at this trolling thing.

          • zero

Surely, Move isn’t needed, but if you want to be able to use the Playstation Vr headset to its fullest you will need to buy Move controllers, for example for maximum immersion with The Heist demo, where you control two hands with two move controllers, could it be done with one or two dualshock 4’s? Maybe, but it wouldn’t nearly be the same.

Then again, we will most likely see developers stop implementing double Move controller support when they notice that people just aren’t buying them and games made for them. So you may be right, they may not be needed after all.

          • J.j. Barrington

“when they notice that people just aren’t buying them”

            Already decided, huh?

          • Somebodyissilent

The Move is only $15 used and not needed for most games.

          • WTGHookshot

Heck, last Black Friday, at Gamestop, I got 3 used Move controllers for $8. Not $8 apiece, $8 total.

          • zero

Imagine when the limited stock of USED products runs out though… smh

          • WTGHookshot

Well, thankfully, new stock is being made. And it’s not super expensive. Amazon was just selling brand new Move controllers last week for $23.99. That’s a far cry from being super expensive, especially considering it’s optional for most games and PS VR will cause an abundance of them, including used ones.

          • zero

Let’s also hope then that Amazon pricing them at $23.99 wasn’t just Amazon trying to clear their remaining stock and let’s also hope that the new line of Move controllers won’t be priced at $49.99 a pop like the old ones.

Seeing how they priced their motion controllers out of the game during the PS3 days, I’m skeptical about the new production line being any cheaper than their old ones were.

          • WTGHookshot

Well, the good news is the old Move controllers for PS3 are the same as the Move controllers for PS4. So, at this point, the tech and manufacturing processes have gotten a lot cheaper since their first introduction. So, it shouldn’t jack the price up to initial sales’ prices when they first came out.

          • popo123

What year are you coming from? LOL.

          • Already over 40 million people that have a PS4, and it isn’t $400. By the time October comes, it could be 50 million people that have the system. And lol at your other prices, just wrong, all the way around. You can get Moves used for $10 lol

          • phar0ahad3

Ps4 0$ only an idiot would not own this console
            400$ PSVR

I wonder what would happen if PSVR was made Windows, Linux, Mac compatible. Come on Shu, do it!

      • press X to continue

You can bet that Sony is heavily subsidizing the PS4 and so they need to get the money back with game revenues and licenses. Sony certainly will fight every 3rd party that tries to add PSVR support to PC/Mac with all technical and legal means.

        • Geotherma
          • press X to continue

Thanks for the link, although it looks more like an interpretation by Gamespot. There was no quote that was referring to the PSVR. However, if it’s millions over millions sold, it could be quite possible that they will sell on a profit soon after launch. Sony is long enough in this business with producing and distributing so many electronic devices world-wide.

          • J.j. Barrington

You realize- I know you do- that you were and are wrong about the PS4 being heavily subsidized, right?

          • press X to continue

My assumption was about the PSVR, not the PS4.
UPDATE: Oops, I just noticed my mistake. I meant the PSVR, not the PS4.

          • J.j. Barrington

            Stimakes happen.

        • J.j. Barrington

          Um, wrong.

        • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

They recently announced PS4/PS3 streaming on PC and Mac. So it might be possible.

          • press X to continue

Yes, which is great. I have my doubts PSVR could be supported on the streaming clients like the DS controllers… but it would be awesome of course. And yes, if they indeed sell the PSVR with a profit already at launch, it would make perfect sense for Sony to support compatibility.

        • HAppY_KrAToS

Sony have at least 10-15 years of great solid knowledge regarding the head mounted displays.

Also, we may think there are some alien tech inside it, but it’s only a few components here and there.

The dual displays may be the most expensive element. .. but when you order millions units at once, you get 50%, 60, even +70% off.

While the competition had to start from scratch, Sony, as I said, already had the technology. .. basically, it’s only a couple of displays, some motion devices, a few cables, and the little box, to turn the 3d image and flatten it, so any TV can receive a proper image.

I would say the SONY VR costs them less than 300$. Maybe 250$.

    • Lamanuwa

Uncharted 4 will easily smash those numbers through the roof.

  • majestix1988

with sony support through exclusive games on it….i guess

    • garf02

funny when who keeps VITA alive is not sony (they already dropped it)
and the best seller of PS4 are almost non Sony IPs

Bloodborne is Sony ip. Infamous is sony ip . Driveclub is sony ip . Until dawn is sony ip.

        • GOW

and all the above SONY Exclusives did sell well… also games like COD, BATTLEFRONT will have more players since they are specifically committed to this sort of games .. COD did sale more on PS4 and made PS4 the winner last year black friday… Even Division is selling more on the PS4 given the fact that the XBOXONE is getting the dlc 1 month earlier than the PS4

        • Lamanuwa

          Don’t forget Gran Tourismo.

      • There is no financial sense for Sony to continue to heavily support the Vita.

The best sellers on the PS4 don’t jab ! to be exclusive. It doesn’t make a game great by selling good. Games like Bloodborne and Until Dawn are amazing and the future is bright with Detroit, Horizon, Uncharted 4, and so on.

      • Senpai Gundam

I don’t see why you’d just randomly bring up the Vita, but I guess you’re desperate to make some kind of point and of course third party games will sell better than exclusives.

        • garf02

cause he said Sony will keep it alive, when they are not even the one that ar responsible for PS4 not VITA selling

      • Stranger On The Road

and the best PSVR games might also turn out to be none Sony IPs! That is what happens when 3rd parties support your platform, the increase the choices you have as a consumer and give you more options!

Right now, the top of my to get list for the PSVR are mostly none Sony IPs!

        • garf02

yeah, how is that 3rd party support doing to PSMOVE? or did for the Wand? or doing for whatever gimmicks make up the DS4

VR is the new Motion control, fun at the start to experiment, but when it dont turn out to be a game changer, it will be dropped

          • Stranger On The Road

you really don’t know much about VR, you just keep hating it out of ignorance. PSVR already has a lot of 3rd party support, and there is a massive interest in VR in other industries that have nothing to do with gaming.

VR is here to stay, there is no getting rid of it this time around.

          • J.j. Barrington

Dude, stop. You’re just making yourself look worse and worse.

      • CloudStrife87

What’s even funnier is that those games that are keeping the Vita alive are only coming out because of Sony. No developer in their right mind is going to support a “dead” system unless their receiving support from someone. So in way Sony is keeping the Vita alive.

    • Anders

Search for ANY PlayStation console and it’s games on Wikipedia and sort by publisher. I think you will be surprised to see how many Sony Computer Entertainment games there actually are.

you hear that about every new tech, how is 3D monitors/ TV doing?

VR might finds a place in other areas, but on vidya it wont cause the spectrum within it can works gets reduced to horror games 1st per, 1st person shooters (till someone necks gives up) and racing sims

        • Stranger On The Road

3D monitors and TV are still being sold and supported, Sony isn’t the developer/OEM who backed it up. That said, 3D TV is nothing like VR, try the tech before making bad assumption about it and comparing to something that looks nothing like it.

and do try to look up some trailers about the games that are coming on VR, otherwise you do come out as just hating for the sake of hating it.

  • The-Beast

The HTC Vive does cost $800, the Ps4+Camera+PsVr will cost +/- $810 for the complete VR experience. Sony does it again! I’m looking forward to it, but plan on getting mine just next year. Need to start saving 😛

    • DogeBroReturns

And the htc vive requires about 1500$ worth of pc hardware. 800+1500=2300$
So that’s not exactly the same price as the 800$ you need to buy a ps4+psvr set.

      2300$ (HTC/Oculus) Vs 810$ (PS4VR)

Sony is nailing it , and by far!!

    • Agustin Freyre

If you are gonna count the ps4 console for PSVR, then add a worthy rig to run the Vive…

    • TristanPR77

So you count the PS4 as part of the solution but does not count a capable PC as part of the solution for Oculus or Vive?

    • J.j. Barrington

Why do that? I know three others have already noted it, but why phrase it like you did and not include the price of a PC capable of running the Vive?

      • The-Beast

I was trying to show that you can grt the complete VR experience for the price of a competitor’s VR headset. Bjt it’s fixed.

  • Eggyhead85

Who was saying it was game over for PSVR if it was $400?

    • MrVux007
    • TC0072

Not sure why it’s a surprise, the only hint they gave about price was that it would be the same as a new gaming platform, it turns out it’s exactly the same price as the PS4.

      • Eggyhead85

Well, with the additional hidden cost of the camera (and move controllers, if you want to go all in)

        • TC0072

The move type controllers are extra for the Oculus as well. Only surprise would be the camera but a lot of people have it already, doesn’t make business sense to include it.

        • HAppY_KrAToS

I’m glad I was one of the gamers who have purchased a ps move to play some great, accurate, interesting, ps move games.

Fortunately, they won’t be making a ‘ps move for ps4’, and the ‘old’ ones still work.

          NOW, Sony,

Just release a firmware with the option to use the dual lens, on the ps4’s ps camera , and let us create a perfect 3d avatar of our face, that we could use as the main avatar, or as a 3d avatar, that we could use in many games: football, fighters, rpg, etc etc. AND VR.

  • Dark Knight66

Sony is going to start pumping a lot of money into this VR thing now, I just hope AAA game production don’t fall off because of this.

  • Pretty Based!
Meanwhile, Oculus can’t even sell one Rift legitimately. Sure, they claimed to have sold out too, at an even higher price, but they probably only had like two in stock. Based Sony wouldn’t limit supplies like that.

    • Toru

SONY is a giant electronic manufacturing company, so it’s peace of cake for them to produce many stock. Like how PS4 were lunched on it’s first year, they experienced in predicting shipment and demand is great.

      • Thatguy

piece* and yes you are very right.

  • Dark Knight66

    • press X to continue

Yep, sold out can mean anything, although I think they will sell a lot PSVRs. I just hope it won’t be short in supply for the first months like it was with the PS4 launch.

      • Dark Knight66

New tech coming out I know this will be hard to find

    • J.j. Barrington

You don’t need numbers. You want to take away from how this sounds. Looking at all your comments regarding this and PSVR in general, your goal is to spread any sort of negativity you can.

      • Dark Knight66

All my post are negative but I said I think this will be hard to find in response to someone. No matter my opinion on VR it doesn’t change that this is just more media click bait hype. They got ppl pumped for all this without knowing any real info on the numbers.

        • crash bandicoot

Dont you think ps vr solding out is worth reporting what if someone want to buy it? its people here who choose to get hyped for it

          • Dark Knight66

No because its no different then when they had reports of the PS4 selling out in places like South Africa

          • crash bandicoot

Thats not the same its like reporting the xbox one elite controller is out of stock

          • crash bandicoot

And why does it even bother you so much just wait for real sales numbers whan its out instead of saying its a click bait article this site is not like that

          • J.j. Barrington

But this isn’t South Africa. It’s Europe. And it’s Amazon, one of the largest retailers in the world.

          • Dennis Djoenz

Huh PS4 selling out in South Africa is a bad thing? I mean there are people that are living there. If it doesn’t interest you okay, but maybe it interests other people?

I am assuming you are an American who thinks the world resolves only about America lol. There is a whole world out there.

          • Dark Knight66

How did you get that from what I typed like really how, at what point did I say anything about the system selling out in South Africa as bad ? The point I was making was that media sites ran with that kind of news without knowing how many systems places like South Africa got.

          • Dennis Djoenz

You know what of course no one knew how many units they got. Maybe they got 5. Smh….. Point is it gets reported regardless. It shows interest in different countries even SA thats why they report it not because whatever amount of units they got in the first place. SA is not exactly known as a gamer country from my understanding. I did meet some that plays mobile games and mmos but prices there are insane. Maybe thats another thing why they reported it.

        • J.j. Barrington

It’s the same thing done for every other device this gen.

But if we’re talking of something that’ll be releasing in October, you can expect it’ll be a larger number than what Oculus had. That subsequent orders have been opened and sold out says it’s doing very well.

Throwing shade isn’t a good look. I mean, hell, at least be even and say “Well, its a good sign, but it’d be better if we knew the number allotted.”

  • MrVux007
  • BigHurt360

Not getting into VR before it shows itself to be a viable platform.

    • J.j. Barrington

Considering the many options out there, it seems its more than viable.

      • BigHurt360

Yeah there’s plenty to buy, but I want to see what happens after the launch. If this don’t get mainstream it won’t last. No way I’m sinking money into VR just to have it become obsolete after a few years. Early adopters buying in don’t sway me.

        • J.j. Barrington

Rather than viable, you mean sustainable, then.

And even there, this seems likely, as big players(with lots of money and resources) have never entered the market all at once like now.

It’s to be expected especially in Europe, while i do believe the install base really help and although PC also has the install base, it seems only few people has the minimum requirement to run VR on their PC, i might wait first before buy, because the 2nd and the third year probably they will make the price more cheaper. But if i have money i probably gona buy Oculus because i have the PC to run it, but for the time being i need a lot of review to compare both.

Europe selling the best is not going to be a surprise.

That’s no wonder, because it actually is cheaper in Europe than in the US. When you convert $399 to Euros, then add e.g. 19% tax as every price in Germany already contains, you end up with €428. So basically we are given a 7% discount.

And when you do the same math with Oculus Rift and Vive, you get the opposite, as they both ADD to the Euro price on top of taxes. And to make it worth, both have no supply chain in Europe and demand a steep p&p fee, sending it out from the US.

So whatever the PS VR is cheaper than the PC headsets, the difference is much much higher in Europe.
