Ghost Recon Wildlands Was the UK’s Best-Selling Game in March; Horizon: Zero Dawn Second

Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands was the best-selling game at retail in the UK last month, March 2017.

Right behind it is Sony’s new big IP: Horizon: Zero Dawn, which notably was a single-format release, while Ghost Recon Wildlands was multiplatform. Horizon: Zero Dawn on the PS4 was the best-selling individual SKU of the month.

Right behind the PS4 exclusive is another exclusive, expect from Nintendo: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Released only on Nintendo platforms — the emerging Switch and the decaying Wii U — Breath of the Wild managed to carve out the third spot, despite Switch shortages throughout the month.

Rounding out the top five was Mass Effect: Andromeda (Xbox One, PS4, PC) at number four — which notably was only on sale for half a month, and consequently at a disadvantage compared to the other top five — and LEGO Worlds at number five. The top five for the month was notably all new releases.

Speaking of new releases, two other newly-released games also managed to grab a spot in the top 20: 1-2-Switch (number 9) and NieR: Automata (number 17).

The latest monthly report from stat-tracker GfK also features — for the first time ever — the boxed sales chart for the Nintendo Switch. The top five selling Switch games for the month — at retail — were: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Number One), 1-2-Switch (Number 2), Super Bomberman R (Number 3), Just Dance 2017 (Number 4) and Skylanders Imaginations (Number 5).

Switch games sales accounted for 8.2% of all games sold last month in UK, making it the third most successful in regards to game sales, behind the PS4 and Xbox One.

However, while March seemed like a games-galore (and it was), the actual numbers of games sold in March 2017 was down compared to March 2016. The drop wasn’t substantially — only 2.8 percent — but is being chalked up to Ghost Recon Willdlands’ performance not being able to match last year’s performance by The Division, which finished 2016 as one of the best-selling games for the year.

While game sales were down, revenue actually went up by 2 percent.

Meanwhile, over on the publisher front Ubisoft was the big winner with 19 percent share of the market, followed by Sony who had 15.2 percent, Nintendo 14.1 percent, EA 12.2 percent, and then Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment who garnered 8.5 percent.
