Five Great Games Other Than Modern Warfare 3 That You Should be Playing

Unless you’re living under a rather very large rock, then you should know that today is 11/8/11 also known as the day that Bobby Kotick and company unleash the video game dogs of war, A.K.A. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. And while I’m sure most of you can’t wait to frag your friends, tango your suckas, or find the little soldier in all of us, you should know that there are some recent great games that have been readily available  for a few weeks now.  This isn’t intended to stir the pot or deter folks from MW3, which I’m sure will be great in it’s own right. No, this is for the shooter fan that should have been enjoying these gems for the past couple of months.

Without further ado, and in order of release (so keep your fanboy comments to yourselves) here’s a list of the most recent and best reviewed (shooter) games on the site as well as a short and sweet excerpt from each review.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception10 / 10

There is so much that can be said about this title and yet it wouldn’t be enough to describe how great it really is. It’s making me rethink what other developers are doing wrong and at the same time has me second guessing my own list of all time favorite games. As a game reviewer who’s seen it all and done it all, nothing has really prepared me for this. No matter how high of a score I give I can never say that a game is perfect, but through its pacing, story telling, and emotional roller coaster, Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception is damn close to it.

Battlefield 39 / 10

Battlefield 3 had a lot of hype to live up to, both concerning the graphics and the game in general from newcomers to the series and fans from the beginning. I think a lot of complaints people will have against the game will be results in not living up to said hype, and unfortunately that’s a by-product of being so highly anticipated. However if you take a long honest look at this game I think you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.

Gears of War 310 / 10

This game truly is the definitive Gears of War experience. If you still have a sour taste in your mouth after the multiplayer issues and changes made in the second game, trust me when I say as one of your number that this game alleviates all of those issues. Gears of War 3 brings an exciting and heart-wrenching conclusion to the story and the lives of all these characters we’ve come to love, and you’ll be shocked many times over by the events that unfold.

Resistance 39.5 / 10

Only the great shooters, in my opinion, can mesh a worthwhile story with gameplay, Resistance 3 is without a doubt one of the greats. This may sound blasphemous to the hardcore FPS fan, but I’ll go as far as calling this one the Half Life 2 of the PS3 generation. Yes, I totally went there.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution9.5 / 10

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a masterpiece.  Not only did it nail the formula of the original Deus Ex, it took the time to improve on it, with better stealth, a clearer, yet still clever conspiracy, cities that really feel alive and creative exploration.  Human Revolution never underestimates or condescends to the player, instead, the game really allows the player to think for themselves and make decisions… I know there is a lot coming out this year, but Human Revolution is already one of the best games I have played in a while and that makes it very easy to recommend.
