Today, developer and publisher Accolade announced that after more than 17 years of being out of the game that it is back, and so is its anthropomorphic bobcat, Bubsy. More specifically Accolade and Bubsy have returned with a new game -- Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back -- for PS4 and PC.

As you may know, Accolade, operated as a publisher and developer from 1984 to 2000 out of San Jose, California. It was notably founded by Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead, who had previously co-founded Activision in 1979.

During these years Accolade developed -- among other games -- a platforming series called Bubsy that expanded across four games during the 90's on Super NES, Genesis, Jaguar, PC, and PlayStation, in the form of Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, Bubsy 2, Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales and Bubsy 3D.

Then in April 1999, Accolade was acquired by French video game company Infogrames Entertainment for a $60 million USD, and from there the Accolade name was retired and so was Bubsy. But he's is back baby!

Development of the new game is being handled by German studio Black Forest Games, who has experience reviving old IP, creating 2012's Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams as well as subsequent releases Giana Sisters: Dream Runners and Giana Sisters 2D.

But Accolade isn't alone. No the revival is the work of Hong Kong-based IP management company Billionsoft, which notably owns the Humongous Entertainment brand, as well as Atari, GT Interactive, and many more.

Apparently, Bubsy is just the first step in a much bigger plan of the company, who is intending to bring other old games back from the grave, such as as Hardball, Deadlock, Redline, Slave Zero, Eradicator, and more.

As for the game itself, Accolade pitches it as a an all new Bubsy adventure featuring the bobcat in a bevy of exotic locations as he travels the planet looking for the beloved Golden Fleece. Bubsy will be equipped with all of his classic moves, as well as a few new ones to dodge and conquer a battalion of Woolies, sharks and bess, and UFOs. Further, over 100 new one liners have been added for Bubsy.

Bubsy The Woolies Strike Back is set to release sometime this September on PS4 and PC.  Below, you can check out the announcement trailer and screenshots which accompanied the out-of-nowhere news.
