Marketing in 2017 is a weird thing. You have corporate Twitter accounts tweeting like a slightly stoned 19 year old college student, corn maze promotion, and now you have porn. As in YouPorn is being used to promote developer Volition's upcoming open-world action game: Agents of Mayhem. No, really, like actually YouPorn.

In some attempt at likely viral marketing, publisher Deep Silver and developer Volition have "leaked" a sextape via YouPorn that showcases one of their in-game stars in, well, a sextape.

First spotted by Hardcoregamer.com, the sextape is dubbed "Deep Under the Cover" and shows Agents of Mayhem characters Gregory Princkington, Ivana Bangya, and Marcus Thunderpump (some choice names for sure) up to some trouble.

But like any good sextape leak, the drama doesn't stop there. As you will know, no sextape leak is complete without an official statement representing the party. Well, don't worry, Volition and Deep Silver seem to know a thing or two about sextape proper etiquette.

The Agents of Mayhem, the fictional superhero-like group released the following statement about the leak:

“It has come to our attention that Hollywood, aka Rod Stone, is rumoured to be connected to a provocative film of questionable taste, and on a completely unrelated topic, probably has no chance of winning a coveted AVN Award. We are taking this time to address the known specifics at this time, namely, that the aforementioned clip was recently uploaded onto YouPorn, the leading online platform championing adult social networking, carpal tunnel research, and eSports.

MAYHEM is working with YouPorn to confirm the tape’s origins, although we have been unable to coordinate or verify the tape’s authenticity with Hollywood directly, due to his “slammed” acting schedule."

There's more. Accompanying that official statement is quotes from Hollywood's made up publicist, Stefany Glitzwilliam of Finsley PR:

"Judging by the curvature of his buttocks at 1:12 seconds and the angle of the money shot, that is, the shot where the male actor on screen is literally wearing a bag of money around his junk, it is impossible to tell if that is my client on screen and ask that the public give him the benefit of the doubt until things firm up and the facts become rock solid.”

Mayhem continues:

"Until we reach clarity, MAYHEM will continue deploying agents to save you from mad men wielding literal space lasers while you remain fixated on tabloid-tier gossip. We take comfort in knowing our fight to curb total global devastation has not driven you into panic. We have no further comment on this manner in particular but would like to take this time to remind the populace at large to join us in fighting LEGION on August 15th around the world and make sure MAYHEM triumphs in the battle of Bad vs Evil."

And there you have it: 2017's first video game sextape scandal. Was it everything you imagined it would be? Is this ingenious, or just kinda weird? I haven't decided yet. Instinct tells me both.

For those that don’t know: Agents of Mayhem is a single-player, open-world, third-person action game for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC from developer Volition, the team that made its name with The Saints Row series. Equipped with the developer's signature humor (highlighted by this marketing effort), you run a no-holds barred operation against the shadowy super-villain organization, Legion, fighting to take back the world after the events of Devil’s Night.

The game takes place in the futuristic city of Seoul, which is located in South Korea for those who of you who haven't looked at a globe since 2nd grade. In it, you play as one of three interchangeable agents, who are part of the Agents of Mayhem. The game is set to release August 15th in North America and on August 19th in Europe for $59.99 USD.

Below, you can check out the aforementioned sextape. If you're at work, I recommend you wait until you get home. Really. Just wait.
