You know, as a long time fighting game fan it's nice to see the recent revival of interest in the genre. Two Street Fighter games, a new Marvel vs Capcom, and plenty of great new series like BlazBlue have proven that fighting games are back, and they're here to stay. We could always use more new IPs though, and I'm personally more a fan of 2D Fighters than any (such as all the afore-mentioned). Enter SkullGirls, a new game by fighting game Champion "Mike Z" Mike Zaimont and artist Alex Ahad who worked on the recent Scott Pilgrim game. Autumn Games and developer Reverge Labs are working on the game which currently has a projected 2011 release date on HD consoles.

“We believe that Skullgirls has the chops to be the next big 2D fighter – it has amazing art, tight gameplay, and a rich and deep backstory,” said Jason Donnell (Autumn Games COO and President)

“We’re aiming to create a new take on fighting games, drawing on our own experience as competitive gamers to combine the best elements of classic fighters into something with intense action, an engaging story and the most advanced 2D fighting engine ever created,” said Richard Wyckoff (Reverge Labs CEO)

I'll be keeping an eye on this one. I like the style, reminds me of DarkStalkers or something crazy like ClayFighter.
