For those of you who didn’t know, the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference was held this past Tuesday. It is an event in which certain companies disclose information about its business or financial performances. There this year was EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello. While there he made an interesting announcement about the latest Battlefield game coming out this fall.
“I’ve made no excuse for the reality that I want market leadership in the first-person shooter game business. In many ways I feel that we created the first mass market first-person shooter with Medal of Honor and unfortunately with the transition to the PS3 era we lost that. We’re after it now,” Riccitiello proclaimed.
He continued to say, “There’s a great thing about an annual franchise, whether it’s us or our competition; when you’ve got that annual franchise it’s a meal ticket, it can generate a great deal of income. We think there’s a window of opportunity here. We’ve been investing for three years to build Battlefield 3. I think it will stand up as the best product in the industy this year…we’re going dead at ‘em.”
That, truly, is a bold statement. Perhaps he isn’t aware of the releases of Resistance 3, Gears of War 3, Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 this year? Moreover than not, Mr. Riccitiello is “beefing” up Battlefield 3’s image. The next Battlefield won’t be bad by any means (based on the previous games) but stacking up to the four heavy hitters mentioned will take a great deal of talent.
