The calendar has now officially turned over from 2018 to 2019, which means last year's sales are now set in stone. As such, we can now look back at the certain sales figures that are available to the public to get an idea of which games may have performed best over the course of the year.

One of those places we can look to is retail giant Amazon, which makes available its own sales numbers for all video game related items on its website that have been sold over the course of the year. As we reported a few weeks back, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ended 2018 holding onto the top-selling spot for all gaming items on Amazon, which is an incredibly impressive feat.

In fact, Switch games as a whole dominated the top 10 software spots on Amazon, but there's likely a good reason for it. Unlike with many other popular games from 2018 such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the Switch games we see coming in high on the sales chart are all exclusives. Amazon doesn't compile the Xbox One/PS4 versions of games under one spot and instead, these rankings are based purely on one version of the game. Still, it's impressive to see how well Nintendo did even against other exclusives such as Marvel's Spider-Man and God of War.

It's also worth noting that these are just the sales from one single retail website. While Amazon is so large that its sales numbers over the course of 2018 are likely indicative of which titles did best as a whole on the year, don't take this as gospel by any means and assume that it's the same everywhere else. We'll have more of a definitive idea of which games did best for the whole year when the NPD Group releases its sales figures for December 2018 in the coming weeks.
