In an interview with Gamespot, Blizzard responded to some of the criticisms some Overwatch fans expressed about the decision not to cast Terry Crews as Doomfist, opting instead for Sahr Ngaujah.
Blizzard's senior designer Michael Chu said,
We love Terry. Terry's awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time. But when we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything. When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who's the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, 'Holy crap. That's Doomfist.'
Not too long ago, Crews visited Blizzard's headquarters in Irvine, California so there's always still the possibility that he could make it into the game at some point or another.
Instead of Overwatch Crews has found other work in games, playing a lead role in Microsoft Studios' Crackdown 3, later this year.
Doomfist is going to be officially added to Overwatch for everybody on July 27. He's currently available now for PC players in Blizzard's public test realm. The game also got a July update earlier in the month that you can read more about.
On top of all of that, Blizzard also just announced that Overwatch will be getting a game of the year edition, hitting retail this week on July 28, one day after Doomfist comes out. That version of the game will contain additional skins for multiple characters, as well as in-game items for Diablo III, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm.
You can play the standard version of Overwatch right now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
