2K Games and Gearbox have announced that all PC versions of the highly anticipated Borderlands 2 will be shipping with Steamworks. This essentially means that the boxed retail version will run through steam exactly the same as if you had bought it on the platform down to the use of cloud saves, achievements and friends list integration.

This is great news for anybody who prefers to have a physical copy of a game rather than just digital. I personally wound up buying Portal 2 as a physical game earlier this year for the same reason, and if I bought more PC games (or had a computer capable of running them that is) I would still do so as often as possible. Something about purely digital doesn't sit quite right with me.

Borderlands 2 will be released on September 18, 2012 in North America and September 21, 2012 internationally so start gathering your friends together and figure out what version they'll be getting.
