In case somehow you missed it, Netflix has announced that Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy franchise The Witcher is being brought to the TV world.
Upon its announcement, the next few hours of my life were entirely spent doing one thing and one thing only: thinking about the cast. During this multi-hour long, intense brainstorm I explored my imagination and scoured the internet for actors and actresses fit to play some of the most iconic roles in the series. And while characters such as Margeritha Leux-Antilles, Phillippa Eilehart, Dandelion, Emhyr var Emreis, Francesca Findabair, etc., play pivotal roles in the Witcher Saga, I decided to focus on the four most prominent faces of the franchise: Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, Triss Merigold of Maribor, and Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Ciri) of Cintra.
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is who probably comes to the minds of most who play pretend caster for Geralt. And rightfully so, Mikkelsen not only has the looks to pull off Geralt, but the stoic nature that defines the monster slayer.
If I was casting the series: I would probably pick actor Anson Mount to play Geralt. I mean look at him. Now look at Geralt. See what I mean? A match made in heaven.
In a world where Mount and Mikkelsen can’t be recruited: American actor Josh Holloway is a great plan C. Aka, there are so many Geralts that we probably could have a Plan G.
There are a few options for Triss Merigold, including Alicia Vikander with freckles and red hair; however, Italian film and television actress Vittoria Puccini is the perfect fit. It would be a waste of time to think about even casting anyone else. Here you go Netflix. Send me my check in the mail.
Like Mikkelsen for Geralt, French actress Eva Green is likely the name that pops up in everyone’s head when thinking about who would play Yennefer. And here I have to agree with the masses: Green could not only pull of the looks of Yennefer, but her persona as well, which is as character defining as her long wavy jet black hair.
What if I told you Eva Green wasn’t our only option for Yenn? Well she’s not. I present you: British-American actress Rachel Weisz.
If there is someone better to play Ciri than French actress Mélanie Laurent I’ll give all my money to my girlfriend’s dog for college. I mean look at this comparison.
British actress Emma Watson would be a good Ciri according to the internet. And I think the internet is actually onto something for once.
Can’t get Mélanie Laurent? Emma Watson busy? No problem: Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is a great option for Ciri. Netflix. You’re spoiled. Netflix, listen to me, don’t mess this up. Don’t you dare Netflix.
And there you go, the main cast for the Witcher TV series. Feel free to scream, rant, or politely inform me in the comments below where I went wrong. Who would you cast?
