Catherine Tops Charts in Japan, Leaves MvC3 in the Dust

This is kind of interesting – a new and controversial IP like Catherine completely annialates a tried and true Japanese-centric fighter like Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Is it backwards world in Japan this week? That’s right, the game everyone’s been drooling over for months now finally released in Japan last week, with huge, provocative displays that were shipped out by Atlus to promote the game. Catherine sold over 161,000 copies during the week, the vast majority of those copies on the PlayStation 3 (not surprising).

Coming in second with just over 67,000 copies sold was the PS3 version of Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, a great game in its own right. Does this mean a Western localization for Catherine is a sure bet? Not necessarily, as this will be a tough game for Atlus USA to market in North America, for sure. Soccer moms will cry streams of tears if little Johnny is exposed to this game on store shelves. There will be tears, oh yes, sweet, sweet soccer mom tears.
