Funcom’s Conan Exiles launched on Steam Early Access with the option to display full nudity, and that certainly surprised many, contributing to create buzz for the game. Unfortunately, Xbox One players won’t have the same “freedom” when the game will release on Xbox Game Preview in Q3 2017.

Creative Director Joel Bylos clarified the point during a chat with DualShockers at GDC 2017, mentioning that Microsoft has been pretty clear about it, and “it’s not gonna fly.”

Bylos actually mentioned that he doesn’t yet know whether the “partial nudity” (which displays breasts only, with genitals covered by a loincloth) option will make it in, as Funcom hasn’t yet talked to Microsoft about breasts, and they do allow that kind of display in other games.

While Bylos did not talk about PS4 (which will get the game when it’ll fully launch in Q1 2018), but the answer from Sony will be most likely the same.

Earlier in the chat, he also explained why the studio decided to include full nudity in the PC Version game: it fits the Conan universe, it’s fun, and it could easily be implemented in a way that allows players to turn it off (it can be turned off server-side, or set to partial only, and players can also select a more conservative option individually on their own character).

Funnily, Bylos explained that he had to break the news to Character Artist Jenni Saarinen, telling her that she would have to design penises. During the next three weeks, her screen was full of “reference material.” It was a fun experience for everyone involved.

We also hear that the folks at Funcom are “a bit shocked about how much it took off,” but Bylos thinks that’s because they did not talk about nudity before release. They just thought “it’s there, and people will find it,” and they didn’t expect that it would attract this much attention.

Conan Exiles is currently available for PC on Steam Early Access, and will launch on Xbox Game Preview in Q3 2017, followed by the full launch, including PS4, in Q1 2018.

Update: Microsoft issued a statement denying that content is being altered at its discretion, and mentioning that it will abide by the rating given by the ESRB.

“The statement made by Funcom about “Conan” content being altered at the discretion of Microsoft was inaccurate. Microsoft and Xbox abide by the policies and guidelines set forth by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) rating system. Funcom has submitted “Conan Exiles” for review to the ESRB and pending its receipt of an acceptable rating we look forward to publishing the game on Xbox.”
