Today the Game Tools and Middleware Forum 2013 was held in Tokyo and Sony Computer Entertainment Senior Vice President of the Technology Platform Teiji Yutaka held a presentation to introduce some of the engines available on PlayStation platforms.

During the presentation he explained that the widely used PhyreEngine by Sony Computer Entertainment will work with PS4, and will act at middleware with PS3 and PS Vita to develop advanced cross platform titles and platform dedicated titles. The engine is provided for free to licensees alongside extensive documentation, the source code, and several pre-made game templates for developers to play around with.

This includes a 1st person/3rd person 3D open field, a 1st person/3rd person 3D closed room, a 2D sprite-based template and a 2.5D 3D/2D mixed environment that is still in development.

PhyreEngine has been used on 110 titles since 2008, and between them we find Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, the Atelier series, Flower, Journey, Disgaea 4, Hyperdimension Neptunia, the upcoming The Witch and The Hundred Knights and The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki and many others.
