Who says creating fan art doesn’t pay off?

DeviantART member ~Aeonsend is walking home with $10,000 and a Gears of War Limited Edition Xbox 360 package after submitting the winning entry in the Gears of War 3 Gears United/Artists United Contest. His submission is a particularly badass scene of Gears protagonist Marcus Fenix silhouetted by a bolt of lightning with Locust and Lambent troops  advancing on him. The title of the piece is Bring It and, for our readers stuck in the year 2000, regrettably does not feature either Kirsten Dunst or Gabrielle Union in cheerleader uniforms.

Epic Games judges said they voted for this particular piece because of its “ominous, bleak and soul crushing” aesthetic. Only on Serra would “soul crushing” be a qualification for a winning scene.

Runners up ~wwudesign and ~JerMohler both won 4GB Xbox 360 consoles, a copy of Gears 3 and cash prizes of $1,000 and $750, respectively. Check out their artwork below.

Is it just me or does ~JerMohler’s entry make you yearn for a Gears title with Metal Slug graphics and gameplay?

The other 97 folks who secured spots in the top 100 were awarded $200 and a copy of the game as well. The rest of the entries can be found in the contest’s official gallery.
