Just like life, video game don’t always go according to plan. It was recently revealed in an interview with IGN that Watch_Dogs was designed to be a racing game. Many years ago when the game was in its infancy stages the goal was just that simple.
Ubisoft North America President Laurent Detoc revealed,
They were working on a driving engine, working on something. We had the Driver license. This was years ago. Then we were thinking, ‘no, this is not the way we want to go with a driving game,’ so we canceled that and restarted. It’s not like Watch_Dogs started as Watch_Dogs. The Watch_Dogs project was initially another game.
As the year progressed and the game started to take shape, not all of the original ideas were scrapped. Some parts of the engine was used in Watch_Dogs after the development team went through some changes and a new creative director was added. At that time Ubisoft was also working on another driving game so they came to the decision to cancel the driving version of Watch_Dogs.
Detoc further explains,
What happens is that a game gets canceled, and then you take pieces of that game to make a new one. We could have had another driving engine from another team in another place, and then it would have been used by the Watch_Dogs team.
While we may never know what could have been, the game we’re getting now sounds a bit more enticing than their original idea.
Watch_Dogs will release in Spring 2014 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC.
