After helping to bring in the “toy-to-life” feature games alongside Skylanders, Disney Infinity has steadily grown its roster of iconic characters from Disney with famous faces from its numerous movies and more recent property acquisitions like Marvel, and in the game’s latest iteration, will be taking players to a galaxy far, far away.
Following a series of leaks and rumors in the past several weeks, Disney Infinity 3.0 has officially been confirmed in development for release this fall, with the latest version of the popular series to include several new faces from the Disney universe, including the introduction of characters from the Star Wars universe and others from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out, and more to be revealed.
The latest title was officially confirmed through its feature on the cover of next month’s issue of Game Informer magazine, along with several details on the game’s development team and cycle. Series developer Avalanche Studios is back to head Disney Infinity 3.0, while the team will also be bringing in support for several of the game’s features from other studios.
DmC: Devil May Cry developer Ninja Theory will assist with developing Jedi/Sith lightsaber combat in the Star Wars portions of the game, while LittleBigPlanet 3 developer Sumo Digital will assist with driving and vehicle controls, including several of the new Star Wars-based vehicles such as the iconic Millennium Falcon. Sleeping Dogs developer United Front will handle development on the Marvel side of things, including work on several characters being introduced from the latest Avengers film, such as Ultron, and Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor.
The game’s Star Wars content will be divided between two campaigns in the playset, with “Twilight of the Republic” to be headed by Ninja Theory and focus on the prequel trilogy, while Studio Gobo will create the “Rise Against the Empire” campaign that will follow several of the events from the original Star Wars trilogy. Confirmed characters from Star Wars to appear in Disney Infinity 3.0 will include Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Maul, Chewbacca, Han Solo, and more. An additional playset based on the latest installment in the series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is also planned for release this winter to coincide with the film’s release in December.
