Today Famitsu reported that Dragon Quest XI debuted with 2,080,806 copies sold in Japan in its first two days on the shelves, since the launch on July 29th, until the week ended on July 30th.

To be more specific the game sold 1,130,468 copies on 3DS and 950,338 copies on PS4.

At least at retail, it appears that the 3DS version beat the PS4 one, which wouldn't be too surprising considering the giant difference in installed base (the 3DS is probably going to pass 23 million units with today's tally, while the PS4 just passed five million).

That said, there is still time for an upset, even if the final verdict will be considerably delayed. The numbers above include download cards, the double pack and console bundles, but it doesn't include digital downloads. In Japan, the Sony crowds has become much more accepting than the Nintendo crowd about full game downloads, and the gap (about 180,000 copies) is small enough that digital downloads could revert the result. Unfortunately, the only provider of digital download figures for Japan is Famitsu itself, and they publish the tally in the issue of the magazine at the end of the following month. This means that we'll know the real verdict on August 30th.

The game sold at debut in the same ballpark of the latest single player chapters. Dragon Quest IX debuted with 2,338,221 copies sold, Dragon Quest VIII sold 2,267,827 copies at launch, and Dragon Quest VII moved 1,821,450 units.

While Dragon Quest VII was straight out beaten, there is still room for the game to beat both Dragon Quest IX and Dragon Quest VIII if digital downloads were strong. One thing is for sure: the console market may have declined to an extent in Japan, but this doesn't appear to affect Dragon Quest.

Of course, we should also keep in mind that the figures here are exclusively about Japan. The game also launched in Asia, and we don't know how many copies were sold there.

Dragon Quest XI will release in the west in 2018. The official English title is Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. If you want to see more, you can check out some really beautiful PS4 Pro gameplay, and a glimpse on what it looks like on PS Vita via remote play.
