PS4 Exclusive Driveclub’s PlayStation Plus Edition Still in the Works, Sony Clarifies

In response to yesterday’s rather misleading headlines following Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Jim Ryan’s noncommittal response on the status of the PlayStation Plus edition of the PS4 exclusive Driveclub, Sony Computer Entertainment has issued an official statement through a spokesperson, clarifying that the “free” (as usual airquotes are obligatory, since PlayStation Plus games aren’t really free) version is still in the works.

Although currently we do not have an update regarding the timing for the launch of the PS Plus Edition, we are continually working on improving the server capacity to enable us to launch the PS Plus Edition as quickly as possible.

The quite ridiculous headlines that polluted the internet with a myriad of variations on the “Sony can’t guarantee Driveclub: PS Plus Edition will ever release” theme, were born from the misinterpretation of Ryan’s “I can’t say anything at this stage” response to a provocative “you can’t guarantee that it will ever happen?” question.

At that point, anyone with even barebones interview experience should have probably guessed that it was a simple “no comment” answer, and that it meant neither “yes” or “no,” but apparently many thought it was warranted to interpret it negatively.

I normally don’t like to write “I told you so,” but in this case… Well… I told you so.
