E3 2011: Insomniac Returns with Overstrike

A reformed mercenary, a thief, a gifted young scientist, and a temperamental detective form up Overstrike Nine in the new multi-platform franchise from Insomniac, Overstrike. Seeing this legendary studio creating a completely new franchise and putting it on multiple systems is pretty big to be quite frank. What kind of game is this? Read on to find out.

Right off the bat I was stunned by how nice the animation and art design is. A small touch of Mass Effect with some Mirror’s Edge thrown in for good measure creates a nice semi-realistic aesthetic that still has a cool “cartoony” appearance to it.

The game appears to be very much a squad based affair, with the four agents all showing off a different specialty. One of the agents displayed a cloaking ability which she proceeded to use to absolutely wreck a couple of guys. Another made good use of some cool gadgets, including a totally awesome gun that shot an expanding foam that just stopped an enemy in his tracks.

The group all teamed up to take on a pretty tough looking enemy, who then proceeded to turn into some kind of crazy Terminator monster, with the demo fading out just before we got to see how they decided to approach this insanity.

John is what you might call something of a badass. When he's not writing about games or playing them, he's playing in the Kansas City band "Documentary" and drinking as many different beers as often as he can. He's a huge comic nerd in the best sense of the term, with a particular love for the Creator Owned movement.
