E3 2011: Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay Impression

The Microsoft Conference at E3 started with a big hit in Modern Warfare 3, showing off a level called “Hunter Killer”. The scene began with a scuba team swimming through what appears to be a flooded subway tunnel, when they break into open waters and pause to let a submarine pass overhead.

Read on for the full impression and rundown of the gameplay.

After a brief hiccup in the beginning with a controller going out they got into the action as the team attached explosives to the submarine and surfaced to a wide view of a city being bombarded. The action began in what you would expect from a Call of Duty game; high octane thrills with stuff blowing up everywhere in exciting setpieces.

After a brief time skip “in the interest of time”, a chase began with the player piloting a raft and occasionally switching to shoot some targets. The raft loaded into a waiting plane which took off giving a wider view of the city under attack.

Visually the game looks very impressive, and the water effects in particular got my attention. The game kept up the series’ reputation of large, stunning set pieces and high octane thrills. Everything looked very solid, and I think fans of the series will be very excited to see this next entry in the long-running series.
