E3 2012: Assassin’s Creed III Soars High – New Trailer and Gameplay Footage

In the darker days of the American Revolution, the rebels were constantly being forced back into their own territory. Before the tide was turned in our favor, retreat was a very common method used by the revolutionaries. That will not be an option for players in Ubisoft’s upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed III.

The newest trailer for the game opens up to a bleak scene on a revolutionary war battlefield, with the rebels out-gunned and out-manned, and the English on the offensive. As the Americans run, we see the assassin – Connor Kenway – approach the battlefield and brutalize a number of English troops, including their general. Effectively turning the tide of battle, the Americans go on their own offensive and the trailer ends.

A couple of fan questions were fielded, with the developers revealing that key historical figures such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lee & Lafayette will have integral roles in the main narrative.

Gameplay footage was the highlight of the presentaiton. The location is New England, the season is Winter, and the year is 1776 – the year in which the United States officially declared their independence. By this time, the war had already been raging for a few years. Much of the parkour-style of movement has returned, with Connor shown jumping from tree to tree, mountainsides, and over walls.

Much of the combat was also shown, with Connor killing and skinning a deer, and taking on a pack of wolves (Liam Neeson would be proud). Mini-quests will also return along with horse-riding. The primary mission in the demo involved Connor infiltrating and decimating an English compound, with the objective to assassinate the general on-site – It would not be Assassin’s Creed without an assassination.

The American frontier has been designed as a seemingly open world, similar to the previous games. Gameplay will also shift to cinematics during combat to showcase the gore. Everything is fast-paced, and the environment is your friend. Varied methods of combat and weather conditions were also shown.

Assassin’s Creed III will be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC on October 30th, 2012.
