Although this is strictly rumor control, it has been reported that in July 2008, Infinity Ward signed a long term extension with Activision solely for the purpose of branching away from the Call of Duty series and pursue an "unique IP". With the recent success of Modern Warfare 2, one would have to wonder if indeed Infinity Ward was granted a little space from the series it created. VG247, a British Gaming News site, has unnamed sources that suspects two heir apparent to the mega series: an unnamed Canadian studio, and Sledgehammer Games, Activision's newly founded San Francisco Bay Area studio. Sledgehammer Games has stated they have already began work on one of Activisions current series and also stated they have began hiring multi-player designers for their current project.

Also lending to the rumor mill are the two founders of Sledgehammer Games, Glenn Schofield and Michael Condrey, who were behind Electronic Arts' acclaimed Dead Space series before Activision poached them last July. Sounds like something huge is in the mix. Stay tuned to DualShockers as we bring you the latest gaming news as we get it.
