First-Person Survival, The Long Dark, Kickstarter Campaign Launched

Hinterland Games, the formation of a group of gaming industry veterans with over a dozen critically-acclaimed titles between them, have begun a Kickstarter campaign for their first game, The Long Dark. In the game, you will play as William Mackenzie, a pilot who is stranded in the snowy wilderness after his plane loses power and crashes. The Long Dark looks to be a Survival First-Person Shooter/Adventure game, with some Horror elements interspersed throughout.

At first glance, there are plentiful similiarities between this project and the 2011 film, The Grey, which starred Liam Neeson. Much like the film, there will be a combination of elements derived from wilderness survival, hostile wildlife, moral challenges and consequences, and other mature content. The game will be comprised of episodes in order to streamline delivery of the story a la Tell The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. The failed Precinct Kickstarter also planned on utilizing a similar episodic model.

The primary creative team is rounded out by Raphael Van Lierop (Creative Director), Alan Lawrance (Technical Director), Hokyo Lim (Art Director), Dave Chan (Audio Director), Marianne Krawczyk (Writer), and Emily Clare Afan (PR & Community Manager). Cris Velasco and Sasha Dikiciyan will be composing the game’s score. Collectively, the team at Hinterland has shipped some of the following titles:

  • Mass Effect
  • The Unfinished Swan
  • Red Faction
  • God of War
  • God of War II
  • God of War III
  • Saints Row 2
  • Far Cry 3

The base goal will allow continued development of the game on PC, Mac, and Linux. Stretch goals will allow for Oculus Rift support, more voice-acting, and an enlarged score, along with massive global localization. As of this post, The Long Dark has achieved close to $33,000 of its modest $200,000 goal.
