Back in August of last year, This War of Mine developer 11 bit studios announced its new game: a survival city-builder called Frostpunk. Today, 11 bit studios released a new (the second) trailer for the game, and also provided some further details on the game via a new interview with Eurogamer.

In Frostpunk, you play as a leader of a steam-powered City in a completely frozen world, the last bastion of humanity. During the game, you will oversee your society, manage resources, and make difficult, ambiguous choices, similar to This War of Mine. Whatever choices you make, you must always remember that The City must survive. Frostpunk more simply, explores what people are capable of when pushed to the limits.

According to senior lead designer Jakub Stokalski, who recently was interviewed by Eurogamer about the game, Frostpunk at its core is a city-builder. You will build and expand a city using the endless expanse of ice around you to turn into steam to power your machine. An example of the kind of city you can build, can be seen in the new at the bottom of the article.

But as hinted at above, Frostpunk is also a game about the lengths you will go in order to ensure humanity survives. Just like This War of Mine tested your morality with gut-wrenching decisions, Frostpunk will as well, but on a societal scale.

Jakub Stokalski adds:

"If you look at references for survival in extreme environments, things like Amazon expeditions and crashes of planes in deep mountains where people didn't have anything to eat and they have to eat something... It gets pretty grim. We don't shy away from that."

Marketing manager Karol Zajaczkowski adds the he believes the game's story and predicament "will tear your heart apart".  Zajaczkowski further adds:

"Frostpunk is not one of those city-builder games like SimCity where you have problem with crime and you build three police stations and that solves your problem. No, that won't happen in Frostpunk. You have to make decisions and deal with the consequences. We don't want people to face very simple tasks."

As for the game's story, it won't be laid on thick, aka it's not at the center of the game, but rather will surface here in there as you expand. Zajaczkowski continues:

"When you think that the weather is the only thing that can harm you in Frostpunk: it's not. There are different layers, there are different elements of the game. Weather is like the first player on that screen but there are others and you have to be cautious about all of them."

According to 11 bit studios, tonally Frostpunk will be similar to This War of Mine, but in terms of scope is "it's a much bigger game," with 60 people working on it (This War of Mine was built by 12).

11 bit studios plans to show the game in action around E3, with a release scheduled for sometime during the second-half of the year on PC. Console versions are still up in the air.
