Gamescom 2013: Game Director for inFAMOUS: Second Son Goes in Depth on Making the PS4 Controller and More

Game Director Nate Fox talks about the making of inFAMOUS: Second Son, their input in making the PS4 controller and how the game’s developmental process was affected by PlayStation 4.

In the video, Fox states that being able to have input in the development of the PS4 Dualshockers controller was an amazing experience. The Sony hardware team would ask them what features would Sucker Punch want in a controller and then those suggestions were tried out and worked with until the final product was completed. A feature that Sucker Punch wanted to see in the controller included tighter joysticks that would work well for aiming and shooting.

The touchpad on the controller, according to Fox, allows for the transition from large scale attacks and movements to ones on a much smaller scale. For instance, when Delsin (the protagonist) gives a DNA sample in-game, the player can use the touchpad to do the same.

Fox also touches on how the graphical power of the PS4 greatly affected the quality and immersion of the game, such as the lighting, particle effects, textures, sounds, etc.
