GameSpy Shutdown to Affect 50+ EA Games’ Online Modes, EA Looking at “Community-Supported” Options

on May 12, 2014 6:50 AM

Last week with the announcement of GameSpy’s shutdown of its servers that power a significant amount of online multiplayer modes for many titles, many were left in doubt of just how many titles (both classic and more recent) would be affected by the news of the shutdown.

EA announced this morning that well over 50+ titles in its back catalog would be affected by the impending shutdown of GameSpy’s servers at the end of June, with a wide mix between EA’s flagship Battlefield series, Crysis, and Need for Speed titles to also have their online multiplayer modes shut down. After investigating options for keeping the multiplayer modes for these titles alive (including fan favorites like Battlefield 2), EA released a statement on the matter of GameSpy’s shutdown:

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running.  Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.”

“We know some of these games are still fan favourites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”
