Today, The Coalition and Microsoft Studios released a new trailer and details for the impending September update for Gears of War 4 today. The new maps include one from Gears of War 3 and one with dynamic fog; the updates is also bringing new achievements, big improvements to matchmaking, and Ranked Season 2.

The returning Gears of War 3 map is Mercy, which was the hometown of Maria, Dominic Santiago’s wife. The map is now set during winter and has seen some visual improvements, but still contains fan-favorite landmarks like the church and the map's elevated center. Meanwhile, the other new map is titled Harbor Haze, which features a new dynamic fog system that reduces visibility, making it easier to sneak up on opponents.

Both maps are already available to Season Pass holders, and will be released to the rest of the player base on September 12. This update is also set to bring 500G worth of new achievements to the game, many of which are from the opening parts of Gears of War 4, so many veteran players will probably automatically receive most of the updates when turning on the game post-update.

This update also switches Gears of War 4's matchmaking from being a Region Locked matchmaking system to a new "Quality of Service" system. With this new matchmaking system, players will be matched through local data centers with players with a similar connection quality. September also marks the beginning of Ranked Season 2, so new Gear Packs and an improved skill-based matchmaking system have been implemented.
