Aptly named Wavedash Games showed off their new platform fighter Icons: Combat Arena at EVO earlier today.

The game looks strikingly similar to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Melee. This definitely isn't a coincidence considering the game's style as well as the developer's name. The title is meant to be a good entry point for those who might have been interested in getting into Super Smash Bros. Melee but may not have had the means to set up an old Gamecube with AV cables, as well as those who are very familiar with the genre. Many of the character move-sets seen in the trailer seem like they draw a lot of inspiration from various characters from the cast of Melee like Marth, Captain Falcon, and Fox.

Icons will be a free-to-play game. It'll also have online play in the form of ranked and casual matches. Like Smash Bros., Icons will allow two to four players to duke it out with one another.

This also isn't the first time we've seen a game that resembles Nintendo's massive fighting franchise in some way. Brawlhalla entered early access late last year and Rivals of Aether  launched on PC in March. Wavedash Games is no stranger to Smash Bros. though. The development team is made up of a good chunk of former Smash players.

You can check out the gameplay reveal trailer from EVO down below. The game will be coming to Steam later this fall, you can sign up for the official beta by going here.
