Today Keiji Inafune’s studio Comcept launched a new Kickstarter Project named RED ASH: The Indelible Legend, which is basically a spiritual successor of Mega Man Legends, with a twist.

Inafune-san wants to created a game that allows a player to run freely into an anime-inspired world. In order to achieve this, Comcept will collaborate with the anime creators at Studio4°C, That will launch its own project titled Red Ash: The Animation – Magicicada.

The game and the anime will be based on separate parallel worlds, in order to give both sides full creative freedom.

The Kickstarter will actually fund a prologue chapter called The KalKanon Incident, which will serve as a starting point for the RED ASH universe.

Here’s an overview of the story:

As a result of the Robot World War, humanity is driven to the brink of extinction. Humanity has managed to persevere and survive, battling now feral robotic weapons at every turn in a world of nothing but wasteland and ruins…

With the advent of Lost Technology, precious legacies of a forgotten era, they have managed to rebuild their society. A wealthy class has emerged, helping to expand these newly formed cities and settlements and living in opulence as a result.

However, their livelihoods are supported by the brave fools who hunt the dangerous ruins and wastelands for Lost Technology. These people are known simply as Delvers.

Danger looms over hundreds of thousands who make the city of Great Slope their home. The Mobile Citadel “KalKanon” is currently on a crash course with this city. At this rate, a major disaster is all but unavoidable.

Gecko Company, one of the organizations central to Great Slope, has prepared a massive electromagnetic cannon christened “the Peacemaker” to combat this catastrophe. They announced their plan to destroy the massive Mobile Citadel before it reaches the settlement. Great Slope quickly switches from a city enveloped in panic, to one ready to sit back and enjoy the fireworks of the special, once-in-a-lifetime Burning Cannon Festival.

However, not everyone welcomes this announcement; particularly the young owner of the Bones Agency, Call C. Bones. All Delvers have heard the famous folktale… that inside the belly of KalKanon rests the Legendary Legacy…

“I think we should grab the treasure for ourselves, before those rich blowhards blow the whole dang place sky-high!”

“We have about 14 hours left until KalKanon is within firing range of the Peacemaker.”

“Hop on over there, grab anything you can get your grubby little hands on, and hurry on back! Simple, huh?”

“This is an official offer from the Bones Agency. You got 3 minutes before we head out!”

Of course, she sends the request for this crazy job to her favorite stooges: partners Beck and Tyger.

And here are the official descriptions of the characters:

Beck: Male, 16 years old

A young boy who teams up with his partner Tyger, aiming to hit it big as Delvers. He is very dexterous and excels in using his fleet-footedness in battle, and adept at infiltration into the most heavily guarded areas.

His left arm can be interchanged with different types of tools and weapons, allowing him to adapt to any situation or terrain.

Tyger: Male, 30 somethin’ years old

Beck’s trustworthy partner. Although he has a rough way of talking, he also has a wise and level-headed demeanor that belies his tough appearance. He is an adept sharpshooter with incredible accuracy and precision, as well as a talented driver capable of operating a wide variety of vehicles and machinery.

He runs the T&B Company along with Beck.

Call: Female, 17 years old

A young girl who runs a rinky-dink shop called Bones Agency inside Great Slope.

She’s run the place on her own since her parents disappeared on her at the age of 10. She’s poured all of her time and energy into protecting and improving the shop they left behind, making sure everything is in order just in case they ever come home… Also, she loves money. Like REALLY loves money.

This mechanic specializes in buying lost technology excavated by Delvers and breaking it down into scrap for her own custom weapon designs.

Call seems to have a very bright personality, but she is extremely strict when it comes to matters of money. She’s a master bargainer, and never lets a single cent to go to waste.

Utilizing her technological know-how and information network, she has sent Beck and Tyger on a variety of strange missions over the years.

Gofer: Gender/age unknown

An autonomous A.I.-powered robot created by Call, and official employee of the Bones Agency. Seems like it receives a salary, but no one knows the details.

Its face is actually a digital monitor capable of displaying a wide range of expressions or different types of information.

RED ASH is an action adventure game with third person shooter elements, aiming to “inject more modern design elements into the classic action adventure RPG formula.” Among the staff, there are several designers that previously worked on Mega Man Legends and more.

At the moment the game has been announced only for PC. If you’d like it on other platform, here’s what Comcept has to say about ports:

Although we understand the desire to have the game reach as many platforms as possible, we want to first focus on making as good of game as we can. We will never rule porting out of the equation, but for this Kickstarter campaign we want to focus on making the content of the game the best quality possible. As this is a story-heavy game concept, we are prioritizing stretch goals that add content to the main game.

Below you can check out the pitch video and a few pieces of concept artwork. At the moment of this writing, RED ASH has already gathered $62,942 out of a goal of $800,000. You can pledge your own support here.
