Major Nelson has announced that Microsoft will be releasing an application for the Xbox dashboard called Kinect PlayFit. The application will launch for free today on Xbox LIVE in the US and later in the week outside of the US.

Kinect PlayFit will keep track of calories that gamers burn when playing Kinect games such as Dance Central 2  or Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012. Gamers will be able to view personal stats over time and view leaderboards to compare rank with other Xbox LIVE members. There is also the possibility to earn credit for calories and get Achievements and Avatar Awards.

Kinect PlayFit features activity challenges, rankings, and LIVE integration so gamers can work on getting the top of the leaderboards while getting a workout. Those looking to keep track of calories burnt and their workout with their Kinect will find this free application is a must have.
