Electronic Arts has stuck Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning with an online pass. Previously all we had to go on was that this pass unlocked the game’s Mass Effect armor — now we’ve learned that there are whopping seven quests unavailable without it.
According to Jim Sterling over at Destructoid, the code on his pass, claiming to grant him access to these quests, is “currently invalid.” What’s unsettling is that Amalur is a single-player gamer — since when did single-player experiences require an online pass. It feels like publishers 38 Studios and EA are trying to lock you into a commitment, because god forbid they give you all the content up front without dangling it just out of your reach.
Single-player games with online passes: the way of the future? We hope not.
