The Starship Damrey, a visual novel style game created by Level-5, has been released today for North America for the 3DS eShop. They’ve also released a launch trailer, which features both gameplay and commentary from Game Designer Kazuya Asano and Writer Takemaru Abiko.
According to Abiko, the game is meant to have a retro and nostalgic feel but be a brand new experience at the same time. The two developers invoked the style of the old text-based adventure game–the kind that offers no tutorials or help and is dependent on the player’s own creativity, exploration and instincts (Asano even suggests in the video to keep a notepad with you while you play).
In the game, players awaken to discover that they are trapped in a Cold Sleep capsule aboard the starship Damrey, with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Since it is a visual novel, you’re exploring the ship in first-person view while interacting with objects and places in order to piece together the character’s lost memories.
I’ve always been a fan of well done visual novels (the Phoenix Wright series for instance) and so The Starship Damrey sounds like an interesting, if not challenging, foray into the genre. The price (a mere $7.99) doesn’t hurt things either.
