In a new interview with GameSpotLife is Strange: Before the Storm's lead writer Zak Garriss and producer David Hein talk a variety of things about the upcoming prequel to 2015's Life is Strange, including why the game features a three episode format and whether you should play it before or after the aforementioned Life is Strange.

During the interview, GameSpot brought up that developer Deck Nine Games has mentioned in the past that Life is Strange: Before the Storm will be likely six to nine hours long, which is a bit shorter than it's predecessor. That being said, the outlet followed up with a question about the developer's decision on why it decided to condense the story to three episodes rather than just stick with five.

To this Garriss revealed that when Deck Nine Games was initially talking to Square Enix (publisher of the series) it had no particular length in mind, and that it was "contemplating stories of all shapes and sizes." The writer continues:

"What really it came down to is: the story we found that, for Chloe in this chapter of her life, it genuinely felt like about a three-episode story. As opposed to taking what we were all really in love with and excited by and trying to try change it to fit a larger model, making it a three-episode story seemed like it. Ultimately, that's what we decided to do."

Also in the interview PS4 Pro and Xbox One X support comes up, to which Hein revealed that 4K upscaling will be supported on both supped-up consoles, but no other features were directly referenced.

Lastly, when asked whether or not Life if Strange: Before the Storm should be played before Life is Strange or vice versa, Hein responded with the classic video game developer response of: it doesn't really matter. He specifically had the following to say:

"It's really intentional for us that no matter which title you come to first, you can play through it, enjoy it, and then go play the other title. Nothing in our game will spoil anything from the original game. And likewise if you've played the original game, you'll find all sorts of familiar faces and characters and locations. It will be a lot of fun and are kind of Easter Eggs, in a way."

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC and is set to release on August 31st.  It's important to note that the game is a prequel to Life is Strange and is not Life is Strange 2Further, it is being developed by Deck Nine Games, not Dontnod Entertainment who developed Life is Strange and is developing its sequel.
